All Time Teams

Hey everybody!

I'm new at this, so I hope nobody razzies me that this subject is already posted somewhere, but I need people's help!

I want to come up with the All time startling lineups for each team (or your favorite team), C/LW/RW don't matter, just 3 forwards, 2 defence, and 1 goalie...for example:

For my team the Toronto Maple Leafs
F Doug Gilmour
F Darryl Sittler
F Syl Apps
D Borje Salming
D Tim Horton
G Turk Broda

Just curious to know people's opinions!

For Toronto I'd put Apps, Keon and Kennedy as the forwards. All captains who won multiple cups and are considered top-100 players of all time.

Vancouver is hard because there's a discrepancy between the best "players" and the best "Canucks". For the best Canucks, I'd say:

Trevor Linden
Stan Smyl
Markus Naslund

Mattias Ohlund
Jyrki Lumme

Kirk McLean

HM: Pavel Bure, the Sedins

I'm fudging it a bit as far as LW/C goes but both Fedorov and Yzerman spent time on the wing at various points of their careers.

Fedorov/Yzerman - Howe

Lidstrom - Kelly

Sawchuk

Lindsay Yzerman Howe

Lidstrom Kelly

Sawchuk

Detroit is probably one of the easiest out there, and possibly the only team with its top 6 players ever each playing in their natural position.

Dickie Moore-Jean Beliveau-Maurice Richard
Doug Harvey-Larry Robinson
Patrick Roy

What am I to do with Guy Lafleur? Or Howie Morenz? Or Jacques Plante? I kept everyone in position.

Arturs Irbe? Don't be silly.

Patrick Marleau-Joe Thornton-Owen Nolan
Scott Hannan-Dan Boyle
Evgeni Nabokov

I adored Arturs Irbe as much as every other Sharks fan, but him being on their all-time starting five is ludicrous, no matter how you spin it.

Detroit's all-time team is the best.

Among teams with a history, the Leafs are the worst. They never had a transcending mega-star, really.

Blackhawks

Bobby Hull - Stan Mikita - Denis Savard

Pierre Pilote - Chris Chelios

Glenn Hall

(Possible to subsitute Max Bentley for Savard. He was the better player, but 5 seasons may not be enough to include him)

Montreal's is the best if you just go with the 3 best forwards and not by position. If you do go by strictly by position it's arguable between them and Detroit.

Hejduk - Stastny (Peter) - Deadmarsh
Bourque - Blake
Roy

Went with favourite although not necessarily best.

Based on what they did as Devils (what I think the OP was asking for):

Patrik Elias - Kirk Muller - John MacLean
Scott Stevens - Scott Niedermayer
Martin Brodeur

Best career players who played at least a few seasons with NJ

Patrik Elias - Peter Stastny - Doug Gilmour
Slava Fetisov - Scott Stevens
Martin Brodeur

Yes, Elias should be ranked over Mogilny by now.

Igor Larionov played a partial season with NJ before retiring (and was awful), but sub him in for Elias if all that matters is a little time spent with the time.

Modern Ottawa Sens:

Hossa-Spezza-Alfredsson
Chara-Redden
Hasek

I know there is no Yashin and Hasek only played half a season.

Edmonton would have a run at Detroit and Montreal for top team.

Messier-Gretzky-Kurri
Coffey-Lowe
Fuhr

Lowe is a weak link but Gretzky is well Gretzky.

Pittsburgh could also have the top team with Mario:

Mario-Crosby-Jagr
Coffey-Murphy (maybe Gonchar?)
Barasso

Philadelphia

Bill Barber - Bobby Clarke - Eric Lindros

Mark Howe - Eric Desjardins

Bernie Parent

The Rangers have some tough choices. I'd probably go:

Andy Bathgate - Frank Boucher - Bill Cook

Brian Leetch - Brad Park

Ed Giacomin

But you could probably put Bill Gadsby or Ching Johnson on defense as well, Rayner, Kerr or Richter in net, and maybe put Messier, Gilbert or Ratelle on the team.

If forward position doesn't matter, you need to sub in Morenz or Lafleur (I'd go Morenz) for Dickie Moore.

Also, I think that since Roy split his career between Montreal and Colorado, Plante probably did more with the Canadiens.

Boston's defense is so good, you have to pick between Shore and Bourque! I think Bourque would be a better partner for Orr, so I'll pick him, but you can't go wrong with either.

F: Phil Esposito
F: Milt Schmidt
F: Bill Cowley
D: Bobby Orr
D: Ray Bourque (or Eddie Shore)
G: Frank Brimsek

I was thinking that too, but then double checked, and Plante played 9 years as the starter in Montreal, plus 2 seasons with a handful of games and half the playoff games, and Roy played 10, plus 20 games in the year he was traded. In all, Plante played 5 more regular season games and Roy played 24 more playoff games in longer playoff seasons. Both had 3 1st Team All Stars with the team, and Plante had 3 2nd Teams while Roy had 2. Roy has 2 Conn Smythes, and Plante has a retro Smythe. Plante won 6 cups to Roy's 2, but was on a dynasty team in a much smaller league. I'm really not sure which one should be the starter.

I wonder if they should just move Orr to forward, or else play with three defenseman, and take turns rushing the puck.

They should actually play 1 slot guy (Espo), one faceoff man (Schmidt), 2 rovers (Orr, Shore) and one sweeper (Bourque).

Wendy doesn't count?

Sorry I couldn't help it but i do agree with you here.

Also Boston IMO has the best full team of 20 with the biggest disappointments Cup wise. Bit off topic I know.

In other words one would expect more Cups from their best 20 team than they actually produced, especially on the back end.

5 cups with all that talent is underachieving IMO.
