I don't know if I would call it "hate", but it's probably because he's not met the modest expectations he received.

He's a huge piece for a 4th line, not a winning team.

What were your expectations of him on this team? When we got him during the draft I was under the impression he was in there for a filler role on the 4th line and was meant to basically help out a line that was dedicated to Boogaard and someone else from the Aeros that was called up. Wasn't supposed to do anything. He ended up taking the role on the 2nd line and was a key piece to about the only line last year that could even produce consistently. With Lats out indef still and Havlat playing with Cullen, it isn't like he's playing with players who can actually play. Yet he's still putting on great scoring, and he is on pace for the most goals in his career at this point. Might not be 20-30 like you'd want, but its better than nothing and for a team with minimal scorers, I'll take anything we can get.

Ok, looking at the goals

1 - Backstrom's gotta make that save. I don't care about the bounce on to Stastny's stick, its a weak shot from a bad angle.

2 - Schultz gets caught flat footed. Its a 3 on 2 with back-pressure, he doesn't need to step up on Stastny. Backstrom should stop that as well.

3 - Schultz takes an un-needed penalty on the back-check after a terrible pass on the rush. Miettinen mis-reads the play and Hedjuk gets a one-timer in the slot. Can't blame Backstrom.

4 - Staubitz gets pushed off the puck by Wilson. Shot's a mile wide, but if you know Backstrom, he hears a shot he drops to his knees. Bounces out the other side and Mauldin scores as Backstrom can't recover.

5 - Madden has absolutely no pressure and he throws it right through the slot to the left boards with a right-handed Clutterbuck in the area, but not close enough to make a play on the puck. Backstrom's got a questionable angle on this one, as with a right-hand shot Shattenkirk down that low, you gotta cheat short side.

In other words, Backstrom's play has been just as underwhelming as the team in front of him.

Certainly wasn't mine, because what he delivered last year wasn't a surprise to me. Meanwhile others had him pegged as this faceoff whiz that might have a little bit more offense in him. He backed off in both areas last year, and that has continued this season.

Between this and Philly, you wonder if Richards is trying to send Backs a message or something.

the message sent to backstrom is: your defense isn't really all that great at clearing bodies.

I would have kept him in the rest of the game, if you didn't pull him at 5-3 keep him in.
