Contract discussions with Gill have started

I didn't see this posted, and it is more of a blurb than an article, but Bruce Garrioch (yeah, I know) notes today that preliminary contract discussions between the Canadiens and Hal Gill have commenced:

Quote:
Donít be surprised if the Habs re-sign D Hal Gill before he becomes a UFA. Preliminary talks have taken place between the two sides and Gill is happy in Montreal. Making $2.25 million (all terms US), Gill has played an important role and was key during the long playoff run last spring. Talks wonít get serious until January ...

I wouldn't do more than one more year, but I wouldn't mind seeing Skillsy back for another year.

Mods: feel free to delete/merge if posted elsewhere and I missed it.

agreed, another year would make me happy, but i doubt that's what gill wants. Also, if they're taking back gill, i'd assume that means they're not planning on resigning hammer on the cheap (if possible) since i doubt that they don't want to sign a solid (and younger/quicker) UFA defenseman to shore up our defense.

Questions will be answered, looks like Pierre is making his priorities.

I think he meant 2 millions/year for 2 years.

He said over 2 years. Do you know how to divide by 2?

If we can prolong him 2 years at what he's making right now, that would be just fine.

If Gills stays healthy, he's basically ageless...

Blocking shots, Penalty Kill, using his nice long hard fat stick (to quote Pierre McGuire) is something he can do for a few more years at least without any drop in performance

Gill 1 more year at 1.8-2M
Hamrlik 1 more year at 2.5-3M

no more than that, we need to be able to have room for Carle, Weber, Tinordi, etc in the future.

that's granted that we don't trade or sign a Ballard, Bieksa, Pitkanen, etc. (and you'll guess that it is my favorite solution by far)

Had a lot of nice comments for Gill ready, then realized the source is Garrioch.

I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing both hammer and gill short term, as long as we dump spacek somehow without taking back a significant amount of cap hit. Also, like you say, a solid puckmoving UFA signing (or trade) would be great. Someone that could hit the net on a PP would be nice.

Garrioch is an idiot and is almost as bad as Eklund so I wouldn't take this seriously.

Because you know, Gill with his 1 assist so far his similar to the offensive production that Spacek brought with the Sabres in his final year there.

i wonder if the black hole that swallowed spacek's offensive production can be harnassed for time travel and/or interstellar exploration.

The Habs need another top 6 forward desperately.

There are unanswered questions about Markov's health and possible contract.

Gorges will be RFA.

Hamrlik will be UFA.

Hamrlik plus Markov possibly leaving means top four d-men will be needed........again desperately.

Gill is near the bottom in plus / minus.

Gill hardly has any points.

But the Habs are starting negotiations with Hal Gill? I'd rather see some other things take place first. Does this conclusion stem from the fact that Gill publicly stated he likes Montreal? Did that mean "negotiations" started? Please tell me the Habs have other priorities other than Hal Gill for next year.

For equal money I'd rather Hamrlik anyway. Gill tells corny jokes though, Hamrlik doesn't.

If we can get Gill for a discounted rate : ~ 1.5 Mill, I'm happy. He's a solid bottom pairing guy and helps our PK tremendously and he's a great playoff performer.

I love the guy I really do. But I wonder how much he has left in the tank. In any Case I just think he brings a lot to the locker room, great guy great leader.

I don't know how much that poster likes Gill and his PK'in. He maybe think Gill is the defensive shutdown guy we need on our top pairing.
