Is Letang better than Marc Staal?

Kris Letang is also 23 and is also getting into elite D at very young age. The goal frenchie scored last night was very impressive. Staal has better G behind, while Letang has better offence in front of him. Thoughts?

IMO letang is not comparable to Staal because they play such different styles. Letang is an offensive powerhouse, who also has somewhat inflated numbers playing with Crosby and Malkin.

Staal is at his best when he plays a defensive minded game (shutdown).

I think we should be comparing MDZ's style of play to Letangs and hope that he can reach a somewhat similar level in 3 years.

I doubt you'll find too many Rangers fans who would agree that trading Staal for Kris Letang is a good idea so no. Staal is very important to the future of this team's success. He doesn't stand out all the time but he makes so many "little" plays in the defensive zone that his play could get overlooked by some. He also is out there on every pk and goes up against the league's best offensive players every night (and Pittsburgh has 2 of them).

Letang's great and is a smart player. Could win the Norris this year. I'd kill to have him on the Rangers, but he plays with Crosby... Anybody who plays with that guy can look really, really good.

Anyway...

Letang seems like a two-way defenseman and Staal's a straight up defensive. Kinda hard to compare, but..... Right now, I'd take Letang over Staal.

Bet you no Pittsburgh fan would trade Letang for Staal!

Apples and Oranges is right.

But based on this season, Letang's upside is much more valuable than Staal's.

Letang is looking at at least a couple 6-7 million dollar UFA seasons. Staal is more in the 5 mil range.

Kris Letang's career high in points is 33, only 6 more then Staal. He has one great start a quarter of a season in and all of a sudden he's an "offensive powerhouse"?

This thread screams what have you done for me lately. If Letang keeps this pace up and carries it over into future seasons then no doubt he's better, but for now I take Staal.

Apples and oranges indeed, but I'm not going to chalk Letang up as an elite player based on 25 games. He's notoriously inconsistent, so for all we know he could go on a 15 game scoring drought.

If I had a buck for every time people said Letang has "finally figured it out," I'd be sitting pretty.

SHABLAGOO!!

This is a weird comparison. Letang plays with better defenseman, better forwards, and a good goalie.

Considering that they are not similar in any way other than playing defence, I would have to say that no, Letang is not better.

For what Staal does best, I'd prefer to have him.

For what Letang does best I'd prefer to have him.

Considering that what they do best are polar opposites, I'm not sure that comparing them is fair for either player.

Most teams should be glad to have either player.

Yea, they are two completely different styled d-men.

Letang is your prototypical offensive-defenseman. He can rack up 10-15 goals and get a bunch of assists. More than capable of putting up 40 points a year. He also is someone who doesn't have to worry about playing another team's best players (that's Martin and Michaelak's(sp?) job) so he can in a sense shirk his defensive responsibilites somewhat.

Staal is constantly put out there for one reason--shut down the other team's best players. While we would like him to contribute offensively 95% of the time he's put out there to think defense. In a sense that sometimes makes him shirk his offensive abilities. Staal right now is capable of maybe 5-8 goals and maybe somewhere between 25-30 points.

They are asked to do 2 completely different jobs on their respective teams. I think a closer comparision in the future would be Letang and MDZ, they have more of a similar role. Although I'm starting to wonder whether Del Zotto will have the offensive potential I once thought he was capable of (goal-scoring wise, but that's my personal opinion).

apples and oranges are hard to compare but apples and other apples could be just as difficult. Some like Gretzky while others would make an argument for Lemieux. Same with Bourque and Lidstrom. Letang is on the Pittsburgh Tankers so his numbers are inflated. Last season both players had the same amount of pts. At least Letang has Orpik back there to go up against the other team's top lines. Kind of difficult for Staal to focus on his offense when he has to shut down the opposition's best every night (including having to be out there on every PK). Give us Orpik for Emminger and say, Malkin for Frolov and there would be little doubt who the better "D" man is.

Staal is a keeper...Letang in that pic looks like a girl . In most cases...defense will prevail . I hate Penguins on skates .

The vast majority of fans do not appreciate good defensive hockey.

Staal can make countless stifle-and-clears against the elite offensive players of this league yet is deemed as having a "shaky night" if he bobbles one pass at the blueline that leads to an opposing goal.

Not sure to be quite honest. Letang has a better offense in front of him so he doesn't have to make tremendous plays. But when he does he is successful

Staal has to be back on D a lot to make sure the Rangers do not turn the puck over. and I got to say, Staal is a great defender.

I would actually rather take Staal over Letang.

I personally think that Marc Staal is better than Kris Letang.

Letang is obviously a lot better than Staal since he plays for the Penguins and Staal doesn't.

To be honest, I've always thought (and still think) that Staal is overrated just because his last name is Staal. I think Letang is better, but it's close. He's one of the better offensive defensemen in the game, and his defense is pretty good for an offensive defenseman. Staal's defensive game is a lot better, but his offensive game is nowhere near Letang's.
