He already is the team's best defense man. Staal very much is continuing to blossom! And how in the world is he being out played by his fellow companions?? I'm shocked you actually came to these conclusions. It's more like the complete opposite! In no way shape or form was Rozsival "clearly" the best "d" man on the team last season...
I understand people hate Tortorella. But at the very least, base it on some legitimate ####!
I didn't say for the whole season. No Ranger d-man had a good overall year last season. If you think Staal outplayed Roszival in the last two or three months of the season (like I said), then I guess it was on your XBOX or something.
Staal, like last season, has been a bit inconsistent in the defensive zone. I know it's convinient for people to sing his praises after back to back wins against the powerhouse Isles, but he isn't having as good a year as Letang. End of story.
After watching his defensive play suffer last season, I thought that this year would be a bounceback year. Sure, he's putting up more points, but he isn't playing like a true No. 1. He's not a franchise defenseman, and he certainly isn't in the class of guys who made Team Canada ahead of him.
I started watching hockey in a era where you considered a guy a No. 1 defenseman because of his all-star selections, trophy case and how he carried an entire TEAM on his back. Not carry a defense corps of a team with a Vezina-caliber goalie.
Being the top defenseman on the 2010 Rangers doesn't mean jack. Being the top, or at least one of the top, defenseman in the NHL is all that matters, and right now, Staal is not one of the top defenseman in the league.
It simply amazes me that the same fans who watched Brian Leetch play can call Marc Staal a franchise defenseman. I guess standards have dropped.
