Tyler Cuma Update?

Does anyone know whats going on with him? I see that he was assigned to Houston this year but I cant find any record of him playing or an injury update. Anyone have any info on him?

Heh. Sort of humorous to come in here and see two threads on Cuma.

Anyway, yes he was assigned from Houston. However, he's been out for the entire year so far with some sort of ankle injury. I haven't really followed up on much of the progress going on in Houston with the injury so I'm not all the certain what's going on. However, the team has been very vague with injuries for some time now.

It's a weekly question like when will PMB be back.

It does seem strange that nobody has heard anything about the progress of our 2008 1st Round draft pick. Our prospect pool isn't deep enough for him to just fall off the face of the earth!

I believe he's got a stress fracture in his foot.

Its just depressing how he's been fighting injuries ever since he's got drafted.

Really hoping so because all he has to show for...well, anything, is two very good rookie and NHL camps and one mediocre junior season since draft year...

Not much to go on...

I heard he didn't look out of place in the game. Almond had a goal and 2 assists though

Cuma is the offensive one right? And Scandella is the all-round one.

I'm excited that I get Tyler Cuma + Scandella as my most likely draft picks last year (play as Minnesota) as long as Cuma gets called up and then probably Granlund the year after that if he plays in the NHL next year. Well, I have higher hope for these two than Gillies.

Cuma was supposed to be a two-way guy with offensive upside when drafted, but he hasn't really shown that offense much with all the injuries. Excellent skater though. His skill set and size reminds me of a young Nick Schultz.

Scandella was a wildcard when drafted, but he's turning out to be a guy who can move the puck very well. Not sure about his shot as he didn't use it much up here but he looks very good with the puck (although he looked rushed because he wasn't used to the speed).

Right now I'd say Scandella has all the potential to be a #2 defenseman, not a #1 guy but a complimentary player who is more defensive minded and can play well over 20 minutes a night. Cuma has been injured over and over again, and his smaller size and lack of continuity in development might limit him to being a #4/5 guy.

Purely speculation of course, but Scandella's been far more durable, productive, and impressive.

Ultimately I think both are going to be matchup/Schultz-type defensemen. Cuma reminded me alot of Johnsson with his mobility and looked like he had some offensive upside, but injuries and Scandella's rocket like development have them going in different directions.

I guess I'd like to see the Brass try and develop Scandella's offensive game a bit, so we have something a little better than a collection of 40 defensive defensemen in our system.

Cuma has a long way to go before I'd consider him a part of our future. Last year in juniors was very underwhelming for any drafted player, never mind a 1st rounder expecting to lead his team.

I think Scandella plays smoother than Schultz, he should end up as Schultz with better passing.

I have no idea about Cuma and have pretty much written him off any impact he makes will be seen as a bonus in my eyes, with all the injurys he has gone nothing but backwards in his development.

Scandella is tied for 2nd on the Aeros with 10 assists...he has much better hands and puck movement than Schultz. And that could ultimately put him a on a top pairing. Also is taller and has more range.

Cuma has a similar build and mobility, and with injuries could "grow into" a Schultz clone.

I do have a bromance on Cuma's backward skating ability. Damn near as good as Burns.

And to think at the time of that draft, I criticized the pick of Scandella, while praising the pick of Cuma. How quickly things can change.

That's not how my Ottawa friends see it.
