2014 Team Canada?

Is it too early to discuss who will be on the roster? I'm just so excited about the win yesterday evening and I can't wait to see our guys out there again in 2014. Of course we'll have guys like Crosby, Toews, Doughty, Nash and a few other guys from this roster on the team but who else do you think will be on the team?

I'm thinking Stamkos, Eberle, Hall, Green, E. Stewart, Phaneuf, Schenn, Alzner, E.Kane just to name a few. The future for Canadian hockey definitely looks bright.

I want to put in a vote for Wayne Simmonds as a candidate for the fourth line.

Yeah, I could see Simmonds on the team. The kid is tough.

Unless Phaneuf learns how to play defense for the Maple Leafs, I don't think he's in. Canada's defense needs more replacements for Niedermeyer and Pronger types to really hold down the back end. Green and Weber would be decent for bombs from the blueline.

The net that he burned through would say that it's better than decent.

It's really hard to tell because it's 4 years away and anything can happen. So many players to choose from it's unbelievable. I can see Jonathan Toews being captain in 2014.

But then again, Bettman might not even allow NHL'ers go in 2014.

Well, our core is still really young. Just as young as the Americans.

Stamkos seems like an obvious addition. If Mike Green can improve his defensive game he is in. If Eberle turns out to be an above average NHL winger I can see them bringing him in for the clutch.

I think it probably will be, but IMO Toews has shown he has what it takes to be a great captain. He's the complete package.

based on name and heroics it'll be Sids C but I dont think youd find a more deserving captain than Toews.

4 years is so far away....It is really hard to predict.

For instance, who would have predicted guys like Toews, Doughty, Keith, Weber, etc. 4 years ago? And 4 years ago, I am sure every single person in the land had guys like Phaneuf, Lecavalier, and Spezza all pencilled in for the 2010 team.

However, I do think guys like Crosby, Getzlaf, Toews, Nash, Doughty, Weber, etc. are some obvious choices.

Richards and Staal also have good shots. I would have to think Luongo and Fleury will probably be two of the goaltenders.

And it wouldn't surprise me to see a guy like Iginla brought along, for much the very same reason that Niedermayer was brought along this year. Iginla will be 37 in 2014, and will probably still be playing at a decent level.

Beyond these guys, Stamkos stands out as an obvious pick. And Tavares will probably be there as well, assuming he doesn't turn into Spezza #2 like some people have feared.

He'd be a good choice no doubt, but at just 22 years of age, Crosby has already won pretty much everything a player can win. He's a born leader, and a born winner. This is his team from here on out.

And if Toews wins the Stanley cup this year? (which is very well a possibility). After this tournament, I'm not all that impressed with Crosby's performance. I mean yeah he scored the OT winning goal, but he hasn't been all that consistent in all the games. When you look at a player like Toews, he's been our most consistent forward. He lead our team in points, +/-, face off %, assists. All this coming into the tournament as the 13th forward. Easily one of the most underrated players.

I highly doubt any of Tavares, Duchene, Seguin or Hall make the Olympics by 2014.

Stamkos' quickly development should be an exception, not the standard.

Evander Kane, on the other hand, I could see fitting a 3rd-4th line role.

I think one of Hall or Duchene make the team. Speed will be a requisite to be on team Canada as the games will be played on international ice once again. Those guys might have the best wheels on all of team Canada by 2014.

A lot of people who have seen Hall and Seguin play say that Seguin is right there in terms of speed with Hall. Hall has that explosive first step on Seguin though.

Listen, I love Toews. He's a fantastic player in all facets of the game and I certainly wouldn't complain in the least if he were our next captain. Crosby however, is arguably the face of the entire hockey world, and certainly the poster boy for Canadian hockey. He's the youngest captain to ever win the Stanley Cup, and the youngest player to ever lead a professional North American sports league in scoring. Crosby draws the opposition's top line defenders all the time and has to deal with constant harassment and tight checking. I think his offensive output was more than satisfactory given the fact that the top defensemen from each nation we played basically wore Crosby like a pair of boxers. Sid took the brunt of the opposition attention, and allowed our other stars such as Toews, Nash, Heatley, Getzlaf, Staal, and many others to fly under the radar a bit more than they usually would on their NHL clubs. Also take into consideration the fact that Crosby has seniority over Toews, something that Hockey Canada seems to value to a certain extent when choosing a captain.

the 2005 world junior team (the lockout year) and that's basically the team with a few addons here and there (Teows, Stamkos, Doughty)

Oh, I'm definitely Pro-Seguin. I know how he stacks up with Hall and fully believe he will be a better pro (however Hall's skating is still better), but Hall has the advantage of being a natural LW, which IMO is a relative weakness for Canada.
