OPPONENT LOOK: THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Capitals and Stars are two of four teams in the NHL, joining last year’s Stanley Cup finalists, Chicago and Philadelphia, that have three players with 10 or more goals on the year. Nicklas Backstrom’s third two-goal game of the year last night at St. Louis gave him 11 goals on the year, joining Alexander Semin (18) and Alex Ovechkin (10) in double digits.
Tonight is the second of four games against Western Conference teams for the Capitals in December. Through four meetings against the West thus far this season the Caps are 3-1-0 and have allowed just 1.75 goals per game.
This is Washington’s fifth set of back-to-back games on the year and the Capitals are seeking their first sweep. They are 2-1-1 in the second game of those sets, but 0-1-0 after winning the first game.
Washington has killed 12 consecutive shorthanded situations to improve its penalty kill to 85.3%, eighth-best in the league. That’s up from 25th last year (78.8%). Washington is 10-3-0 when it holds the opposition without a power-play goal and 6-0-0 when it also scores a PPG of its own.
Washington’s 10-2-2 mark in November was the best November in franchise history in terms of points and points percentage (tied the 1985-86 team for most wins).
Washington has been at or above 50% on faceoffs in 13 straight games.
Washington is 13-0-1 when it scores a power-play goal …it is 12-0-0 when leading after two periods and 4-0-0 when tied.
Defenseman Scott Hannan could make his Capitals debut tonight after being acquired from Colorado Tuesday.
RALPH AND RAZOR COMMENTARY
"The most satisfying thing is it was a total team effort from us. We got great goaltending from Kari Lehtonen. He's been very good for us all year. In some games you're going to give up a lot more chances than you'd like, and I didn't think that was the case tonight.....We were very supportive all night long. When we had the puck offensively, I thought we did a great job of controlling it deep in the zone and scored some goals because we possessed the puck and forced them into mistakes."
- Dallas Head Coach Marc Crawford following the 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
“I think tonight was a game we probably played with more confidence than we have all year. Winning those two games against one of top teams in the league or close to one of the top teams in the league gave us a lot of confidence. You could see that in the way we were playing, the way guys were preparing for the game, the talk in the locker room. It was a sense of a lot of confidence.”
- Adam Burish following the 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
"There are no excuses, [including] a tough schedule. We just weren't any good. We had no jump, no quickness, no pace."
- Carolina Head Coach Paul Maurice following the 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars.
"I thought we were trying but there wasn't enough jump, there wasn't enough hop in our step, and their skill made us pay."
- Eric Staal following the 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars.
"It took us a while, but I definitely think we have learned. We want to be more aggressive, so we naturally are going to take more penalties this season, but I also think we're seeing that if we're not chasing and we're not reaching, then we don't take the unnecessary penalties."
- Dallas Head Coach Marc Crawford on the Stars penalty kill.

Is anybody else going to miss Movember? I'm thoroughly creeped out by mustaches in general but the NHL staches gave me a glimpse of a bygone era. Good times.
New feature with quotes. If anyone can think of a better name (with Ralph/Razor included), let me know. I couldn't really think of anything so thought I'd ask if y'all had any suggestions.
So Dallas is 10th in goals against per game. I really think our defense has stepped up in the last 5-8 games. If we can stay in the top half, I think we will be better than a borderline playoff team. The Caps will be a good test.
The entire month of December is going to be a good test really.
We're about to play A LOT of hockey in a pretty small time frame (well a month but still).
3 back to backs. Washington, San Jose twice, Detroit twice, Columbus twice, Chicago, Vancouver, and Montreal all on the slate. Sad to say but our easiest game of the month is next Friday against Carolina. After that, it's on.
We'll know a lot about this team come January 1st.
A tired Caps team...Raycroft in...Crawford can look like a genius or a buffoon on this one
I've said it before but Crawford's goalie strategy makes zero sense to me. So last week against Carolina (another ECF foe), he elects to go with Kari for his 3rd in 4 nights, in a city he's historically done poorly in. Now for the Caps, a much stronger ECF foe who will be a good litmus test for us, he goes with Raycroft after 3 days rest.
It's kinda a moot point since Kari did well in Carolina, but it just doesn't make any sense to me why you'd use the backup against an elite team like the Caps and not against Carolina.
Should be a very interesting game. It will be a big test for us playing against the top team in the league tonight, it would be a big win so we need that W! Also Raycroft in nets? Very weird choice Crawford..
Either way, GO STARS!!!
