Share something you were WRONG about...

So we all have our opinions when it comes to anything and everything Flyers related. I'm curious to see what are some of things people were dead wrong about.

For me...

I wanted Kyle Turris. He just seemed more skilled to me and JVR's late surge up the draft boards had me skeptical.

And more recently...

Earlier this season I shared my skepticism about whether JVR would ever really become anything special. I stated that I thought he'd be a good player but maybe only top out at 60 points during his best years. My reason being that he, simply put, played more like Carter than he did Richards, in that he didn't seem to have "it". He almost never played aggressive, mean, and confident. Well, as we all saw during these past playoffs, he is more than capable of playing aggressive, mean, and confident. I hope that continues!

At the first half of Stamkos's first season, I remember telling my friend I thought he'd never pan out beyond a 50 point forward.

I swore Carter Ashton would be the main piece returning for Gagne.

He was exactly what the Flyers would've loved to throw into the prospect pool.

Then the unthinkable happened.

Lots of stuff - I prefer to "discuss" all things Flyers. Many times I change my mind/alter my opinion after hearing other peoples opinions and thoughts. I wish there was more sharing of ideas then "I'm right" "No I'm right" and back and forth around here.

1. Thought we could win the cup this year with cheap goaltending
2. Thought Leighton would play similar to last year in this years playoffs.
3. Thought Homer would NOT give up any more draftpicks this year
4. Thought Homer would NEVER bring up Leighton/Walker after sending them down. Still can't believe the risk he took there....
4. Thought signing Leighton was a good move after taking us to the cup.

I tend to defend the undefendable around here, which means I tend to defend Homer and Leighton a lot. It isn't that I think those guys are great, I simply don't think they deserve the venom they get. However, I am much less a fan of Homer as a GM today than I was this time last year. He has really made some moves I cannot defend this year. I hope this offseason he rights the ship. Leighton I will still defend, but I don't want him as a Flyer goalie next year or going forward.

If I say that I didn't like drafting Carter and Richards in 2003, am I still wrong about that considering the apparent no-shows in the big games and being locker room psychos?

Yes.

Wait. If Dustin Brown raises the Cup before Carter, you're cleared.

I didn't think Carter would get signed anywhere as low as he did. I was thinking 6.5-7 mill/year.

I really, really believed Jonas Gustavsson would be a true #1 goalie in the NHL, even though I didn't think he'd come in and be one right away I thought he would have a career sort of like Niklas Bäckström in Minnesota.

I wanted us to sign him that summer so badly and then we went and got Johan Backlund completely out of the blue. Still don't know where that came from.

I didn't think Leino would amount to anything for us when we got him from Detroit. I was glad to be rid of Tollefsen, but I wasn't surprised to see Leino be scratched so often in the beginning. Then when that HBL line came together, well I didn't expect that result. I thought Laviolette had lost his mind. Leino and Brière are not exactly studs defensively and couple that with Hartnell and his ability to do stupid things on the ice and I saw a recipe for disaster more than instant chemistry.

On a serious note, I actually believed Snider when he said that the Flyers were done trading away young players/prospects/picks for a "win now" mentality. Silly me for believing him and Holmgren just after the train wreck season in 07 because that didn't even last 3 months before they traded away a 1st rnd pick in the 07 draft for the freaking rights to talk to 2 pending UFA's.

5 1st rnd picks, 5 2nd rnd picks and 6 3rd rnd picks in roughly 30 months later and we still don't have a cup nor a goalie.

I agree. However, most of our opinions around here are essentially predictions and are usually proven right or wrong over time. It's just kind of the nature of sports. "Oh no, that was a bad trade!" 2 years later we can usually look back and say "yea, it was a bad trade" or whatever the case may be.

I was pretty pissed when we trade for Pronger. Yeah i understood it at the time, you needed a guy like that to play against crosby and ovie. But still we gave up a king's ransom. Glad pronger help get us to a cup but i believe his good days are behind him and his play is only going to get worst and worst.

Well, if we had Brown, then we'd have two "terrible" captains.

Other things:

-Niittymaki possibly being a starter for a contending team, although I'd take him over Michael Leighton.

-Pronger trade only in the sense that I didn't think it was the time given the makeup of the team, personality, and the coach, but that changed with the coach.

-The Kyle Calder experience, although a month into that we all knew where that was headed.

-Unabashed shunning of advanced numbers. Growing up, I lived in a house where when I broke out numbers, it was like I shot someone.

I was wrong about Carcillo.

When he came aboard I foresaw 40 point seasons augmented by all the other things a tough, reckless crazy man can do to spice things up. Mostly he spends time in the box, and his attempts to draw penalties lately are like.

I still like the guy and hope he can get to the level I thought he was capable of.

I was wrong about Glen Metropolit and Daniel Carcillo. I expected Metro to do for us what he did for Boston/Montreal but it never went down.

And I expected Car-bomb to only go up from the 13 goals he scored in Phx.

After the 2007-2008 season, I thought Braydon Coburn would be a Norris candidate by now.

I didn't quite think he'd be a Norris candidate, but I thought he'd be a top 20 defenseman by now, and that he would provide more offense.

I also expected him to be, maybe not a Norris candidate, but one of the top defenders in the league.

I was hopeful that Eminger would work out. That went well...

I was very hopeful that Legein would work out. Ditto...

I would have bet Gagne would be a Flyer for life and would retire as one of the longest tenured Flyers ever.

I was wrong:

Richards was gonna have a minor break out this season and net 35+ goals
We'd do the unthinkable and come back against Boston down 3-0 again
Pronger would play through whatever pain he had and play most of the playoffs (I'm very glad he didn't though)
Parent was gonna develop into an excellent physical shutdown d-man, worst of all I even bought a Parent jersey

What he showed that season was that he's something that is very very rare. A huge, amazingly mobile defenseman who can play a mean game, hit and also rack up points. I don't know what's happened to that. Hes still pretty young, so i think he can get back there. It's frustrating to see what his potential is.
