I personally don't care what my team is called as long as I was involved, I'd love to be a part of this.
That's another good question, which I am interested in feedback on, and am open to suggestions. We could simply number the teams; we could also amalgamate a few of the teams -- i.e. name a team Los Angeles, which could include both LA & Anaheim, and do the same for New York, including the Islanders and the Rangers, and Florida, including the Panthers and Lightnening. Then we'll eliminate one more team to make it even. This would enable us to still have geographical distinction to make it easy.

I'm also thinking that it would make sense, at least to start things off for the first several rounds, to not have a set time for the draft, and we can do it over a period of a few days. Also, that would enable people who may want to join as teams to confer.
Keep the feedback coming everyone!

1) Not a random sample
2) Shouldn't salary cap be in place?

I don't know what you mean by your first point -- please explain.

With regards to the salary cap, no: I do not want to include it at this point (at least not yet). The reason being is: the salary cap is not really the issue with what I am trying to figure out here. What I want to test is the talent pool and what the league would look like if there were fewer teams.

The salary cap is based on several things, including league revenue (which would be altered, but probably stronger per capita in a 26 team league); and including the primary driving factor -- supply & demand. Right now, there may be a lack of supply, and that is causing teams to overpay to get guys that are borderline players at their price point. Many NHL players are great players, but may still be overpaid because a team is desparate for their services (i.e. Stajan, Gomez, Penner, etc...) and also because weaker teams have a hard time attracting quality free agents based on the strength of their teams and existing players, so they need to use larger sums of money to lure players into their organization.

The cap is a whole different discussion, and I would love to apply what we would all consider "reasonable" salaries to the teams after we have drafted the rosters, and see how that would affect the cap and player salaries. So this is something I want to look at afterwords, just not yet -- because if we do the draft now based on a 30 team cap and players who may be overpaid/underpaid, this will just skew the picture too much for the initial purposes.

Sounds good. You should make a list and confirm with people as to who is actually going to participate.

I will do just that. I'm just going to give it to the end of the day or tomorrow to get some more feedback and people who want to participate. Please PM me or post here if you wish to participate, and please also include your current favourite team(s), location (if not already posted) and any other relevant info.

Once we have identified the participants, I will start a new thread in which I will list the info, and also where we showcase the draft results.

So, assuming we're going to amalgamate the 2 NY teams, the 2 FL teams, and the two L.A. teams, we need to eliminate one more. I am thinking we either amalgamate the 2 Alberta or Ontario teams, or we can eliminate one of NSH, ATL or other. Please let me know what you guys would prefer.

Even going to 26 teams isn't going to make much of a difference. I just did some math.

30 teams x 4 lines x 3 players = 360 forwards

26 teams x 4 lines x 3 players = 312 forwards

= 48 less players

Therefore your 4th line will have 1 old 4th liner and maybe a 3rd liner. Should be interesting. I guess I'll be in for ***** and giggles.

Thanks everyone. Please be sure, in your posts or PMs, to let me know your preference in which teams you would like to represent (and failing that, if you have a 2nd/3rd choice). Please note, the following teams will be amalgamated:
from the East: Islanders/Rangers, and Florida/Tampa
from the West: Edmonton/Calgary, and the 2 LA teams.

To fans of those teams, sorry. No offense is meant, just doing this for simplicity.

Here are the teams, and I will post their representative GMs when all is finalized.

East:

1) Atlanta
2) Boston Bruins
3) Buffalo Sabres
4) Carolina Hurricanes
5) Florida "Lightening"(TB+FL)
6) Montreal Canadiens
7) New Jersey Devils
8) New York State (Islanders+Rangers)
9) Ottawa Senators
10) Philladelphia Flyers
11) Pittsburgh Penguins
12) Toronto Maple Leafs
13) Washington Capitals

West:

1) Alberta OilFlames (CGY+EDM)
2) Chicago Blackhawks
3) Colorado Avalanche
4) Columbus Blue Jackets
5) Dallas
6) Detroit
7) Los Angeles DuckKings (LA+ANA)
8) Minnesota Wild
9) Nashville Predators
10) Phoenix Coyotes
11) San Jose Sharks
12) St. Louis Blues
13) Vancouver Canucks
