2011 - National Hockey League Entry Draft Discussion

I've noticed that a lot of draft talk has been taking place sporadically around different threads. Here's a thread where we can keep the discussion going in one place. Quite early but it's something to talk about besides losing and as of right now we're looking at a top-5 pick.

Here is a scouting report for the preliminary top-15 prospects.

It's kind of sad that this thread is already appropriate.

As I said before, if we are in a position to take Larsson, we must do so. Most of the best players available are defencemen or centres, the positions where we need the most help. No excuse for not picking one.

Part of me really wants to take Larrson but I also want us to have a true first line center in Coutourier. Even though we suck the possibility of getting a top prospect is exciting.

Very sad indeed, I never thought I would be excited for a draft.
These are the players I want in order(if one of them isn't available go to the next one)
1.Adam Larsson
2.Sean Couturier
3.Ryan Nugent Hopkins
4.Ryan Murphy

If you still believe the team can turn it around and make the playoffs, more power to you.

I'd love for that to happen but the team looks done. This is a thread where you can learn more about top prospects and discuss who you'd like to see drafted. It takes your mind off losing and gives you something to look forward to.

I don't believe in anything until it's presented. We're not mathematically eliminated yet, so I won't believe that either. Let's be real, half of this board was ******** their pants when it looked like the Hurricanes could make a quick run to the 8th seed last year, whether it was discussed or not. I know I did. I was terrified of that team. Anyone should be terrified at a team that just clawed it's way to a high-seed. I'm hoping that's us this year.

Except the Hurricanes never came close to getting the 8th slot and they had one of the best second halves of the season.

The Devils have to play at a 113 point pace the rest of the way to get in. They have never played that well in their history. The season is dead at this point.

In fact, we`re eliminated by any other way than mathematically (really? ), so... But it`s your choice. Wish I was so strong to still believe.

Well, our season sucks. And it's effectively over.

At least we can put a positive spin on it!

I think it`s a legitimate question: Will Couturier really become one of the league`s best #1 centers? I don`t know, but something is telling me - no. Can Larsson become one of the league`s best D? I think answer is - yes.

That`s all I have to say about my view on this draft. (still love Landeskog kid, but I know how desperately we need especially D, or C)

Unfortunately, this team has shown no semblance of turning it around. They are playing poor hockey right now and no one in the organization thinks a turnaroound is imminent either. Langs wants a trade and jmac is lost and lou says you can blame him. They played decent against the pens and only generated like 5 chances with minimal threat all game.

We could be a threat and scary if we started to turn the season around but damn we still blow and there's only so much season left. If we are mathematically eliminated soon then we are truly bad because their math says they could lose out and we could win out. The trends simply speak otherwise

I say we trade one of our bigger guns (langs or rolstOn hopefully to some middle of the road team looking to get in the playoffs and get a 1st round pick out of it. Then use that as leverage to move up and try and snag a top D man as well as getting Couturier. Wishful thinking. Although having a 2nd 1st roun pick is definitely attainable I feel.

It's not only up to the Devils whether they get in or not, it also involves tons of luck and hoping teams 8-13 play garbage hockey in every beneficial game.

I'm not questioning anyones passion or anything, don't get me wrong, but let's just see what happens. I just want this team to win all the time until it's impossible, not improbable. I don't care for first overall draft picks. Many of the great players in this league were drafted late. It wouldn't hurt, but I hate the idea of losing a season for a prospect.

I don't wanna miss the playoffs without getting a legitimate draft pick.

Even if we made the playoffs who here is confident that they'd make it out of the 1st round?

And just imagine how embarrassing it would of been if Niedermayer came back for a last go around with the Devils.

I don't think we'll be able to get another first round pick. Not with the expiring contracts we have. You never know, if someone gets desperate enough, or if Lou is slick enough, we could get a first for Langs or Arnott. But I don't think so. I think we might get a second, but that's about it. That wouldn't be a bad return, of course.

I love me some Landeskog as well. I'd be tempted to take him over RNH right now. I know it's tempting to draft for immediate need, but we'll legitimately need top 6 wingers in the near future as well.

Landeskog is a late '92 birthdate, so he could have a development path of 2011-12 in the OHL, 2012-13 in the AHL, and 2013-14 in the NHL. By Opening Night 2013-14, Elias/Clarkson/Zubrus may very be elsewhere. Hypothetically with Landeskog, we could have a top 6 of:

Parise/Zajac/Landeskog
Kovalchuk/Josefson/Tedenby

So that could work too in the case that we're picking #3 or #4. I'd rather take Landeskog rather than say Ryan Murphy even though the latter would fill in a need right now. We just need to remember that most of these guys will need a few years before turning into effective NHLers. Our needs could completely change in two years via trades/signings/Rod Pelley turning into scoring machine.

It`s not that important, what`s worse, this will be like ****ing cirlce. Again and again, no progress anywhere, probably not better offseason in case of getting PMD, another coach fired (well, nothing will help Mac either, but first round exit won`t be that reason at least), surely no Parise re-sign...

Simply disaster!

33-18-4 is what they need to go to get to 90 points.

I read the Caps will have something like 8 mil in cap space at the deadline.

Langs+Arnott for 2011 1st+2012 3rd

Even if Washington does this they still pick late in the first round so it would be hard to get into the top 15 with that pick.
