with no traffic 3 hours, 45 min....though ive managed to make the drive 3 hours 30 minutes. On average it takes around 4 hours. With traffic, well it can be anywhere from 5 hours to 7 hours unfortunately. The worst parts of traffic are usually the 495 (mass), mass pike (I-90?), going through hartford (I-84), leading up to the throgs neck, then the cross island when i get over it. I've made the trip there and back i still cant get the interstates down in order. The traffic i will hit will probably be by the throgs neck. Though on a friday i dont know what i;ll get for sure

That's from the HPC (HYDRO METEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER)

http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/pmdepd.html

What is astonishing is that the signals from all the models are in agreement for a major system. The EURO and GFS for one. The Ensembles for each respective model have also shown the signals, and were the first to show the potential.

The timing of the event will be sometime around the 19th-21st...and it will be cold enough for the snow to be around till even after Christmas.

Great times ahead for hockey fans and weather enthusiasts. Whats better then Rangers hockey, Pickup pond hockey, and a snowstorm together? I'll keep this thread updated as much as I can. Hopefully the Mods allow for this to stand.
A "White Christmas" is nice only in songs, and postcards. I really don't enjoy risking my life getting to work in a blizzard. And yes my work requires me to come in regardless of snow, but hey thanks for the good news...

Right now the euro is leading the way w/ the trends and it has backed off drastically. The phase is too little too late. However, this till needs to be watched.

I'm going to the game in Philly this weekend; weather.com forecasts look fine for the trip down on Friday, but Sunday's not looking too good. If that system could delay itself until next week, that'd be grrrrreat.

I honestly look forward to these weather updates every winter. Keep up the good work hp!

This shouldn't be hidden in an OT thread either btw, way too important and people enjoy this stuff way too much (I know you didn't put it there Hp).

It's out of my control. Sorry.

The bad news from last night seems to be simmering down a little. We have the UKIE that's hugging the coast and giving possible mixing issues. We have the GFS and EURO that were showing an out to sea solution. Today they are backing away from that and are closer to the coast. Ensembles show some kind of snow threat as well.

Right now for the NYC area I'd lean towards a marginal-moderate event. If trends continue to establish I'll def. reconsider those bigger totals from the other day. However, as foolish as I am giving out numbers a 4-8" moderate event is how I see this performing as for now.

Early estimate for how much the NYC area would get, or is it still way too early to even guess?

Let's just say the new GFS run gives the area a CCB(cold conveyor belt) signal. Depending on what side of the CCB you are on you will experience thunder snows. Tropical like downpours in the form of snow. Whiteout conditions. Ridiculous snow rates of 2-4" per hour.

I'll also mention that it spits out 30 inches of snow for Boston. However, this is just one model run-- but consensus is coming in now for a significant event.

More will be clear tonight as the euro comes in. It was the first model to detect it. That will be coming in at 1;30 and if you guys would like to stay up for the fun I'm all for it. I'll be up.

I'll be in law school next year, and I made sure to get a schedule where I only have class two days a week next semester for this specific reason.
Unless you're going to a top, top school, try and reconsider. Trust me.

I have an excellent chance to get into one of the top 14, with virtual certainty of being top 25.

Good for you. Made the mistake(?...sure feels like one now) of going. Top 75, nowhere terrible by any means, but just not at the necessary level. Not so sure whether or not I regret it.

OT: tried to start this in the summer, but what's everyone listening to these days?

Mumford and Sons - Sigh No More
A Day To Remember - What Separates Me From You
Kings of Leon - Come Around Sundown
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
