Pageau or Smith

Trying to convince my best friend, also a big sens fan, that Pageau is better. My friend is a more of a don cherry character who beleives guys like smith and Neil are good and essential to the team, I don't think they are to be honest. Some pros and cons on both and who do you guys think is better for the sens next year in a 4th line centre role.

Pros for Pageau:
Plays with a lot of heart despite small size
Pretty good at faceoffs
Has the speed and defensive awareness to be a really good penalty killer
Has shown ability to score at clutch moments
Has a little glimpse of offensive potential

Zach Smith is handsome.

Pageau is better at hockey.

Agreed. Pageau is kinda boyishly cute though.

Having Pageau in the lineup makes us a better team. Pageau makes our team faster, he's a better pker, he plays gritty, he has character, he is good at faceoffs, and if not already, he will produce more offence than Smith.

Pageau, but Smith is underrated around here. I'd like to see how he plays under a competent coach in Dave Cameron. I know Murray mentioned Smith as an example of a player who didn't perform to expectations under MacLean. He's proven in the past to be a strong bottom 6 center that brings size, speed, defensive play and toughness. I think he could find his game again under Cameron next season.

I don't think we have to choose between them, as Smith might actually be a better fit as a LW with our depth at center. Ideally next season I want a 3rd/4th line of Smith - Pageau - Condra (with Lazar in the AHL).

Smith hasn't been good for awhile. Pageau is a much better player. Faster. Better offensively. Better defensively. Just as physical, if not more. Better PKer.

Both. I wanna see Smith instead of Leggy in future. I believe we could use them both. If not give it to Grant.

But as for now, easily Pageau.

Pageau all the way. Move Smith if Murray can. Edmonton wanted him I think.

Pageau reminds me of Martin St Louis with his passions and skills. Once he gets settled he'll dominate.

Why one or the other? Why not both....

Example:

Hoffman - Zib - Ryan
Mac - Turris - Stone
Michalek - Pageau - Lazar
Condra - Smith - Chiasson

Nornally, I'd be against Pageau. But Smith was terrible when he played this season.

Smith-Pageau-Condra could be a more than decent 4th/energy line.

I understand the OP is basing it on a personal anecdote here, but the real question, as mentioned, is Legwand or Smith. (or at least I hope that's the question)

With Zibby maturing and and Legwand not really playing up to the whole 'insulating' role of a 2/3 center, I hope we move Legwand and have Smith and Pageau around. Not hard to imagine Smith finding his form again. He's been a very useful guy to have around in the past and could be again.

If we are playing Montreal 82 times than Pageau, otherwise Smith who IMO should be Legwand's replacement at some point next season. This allows Lazar to play centre which he is better suited to play & allows Ottawa to call up Puempel & maybe Robinson.

Hoffman - Zibanejad - Ryan
Puempel - Turris - Stone
MacArthur - Lazar - Michalek
Chiasson - Smith - Robinson/Neil

Pageau AINEC

I'm not opposed to seeing how Smith performs under Cameron though, maybe he can rediscover his early success

Smith deserves an extended look once he comes back from injury before his future is considered with the team....several other dead weight players to say bye to before Smith

Exactly what I was going to post. Smith at his best is better imo. Pageau has yet to play as badly as 'average smith' though.

The old Smith was your prototypical bottom 6 dream player that brought toughness, peskiness, grit, agitation and some scoring ability. He is not the same player he was.

Id like to see him in Legwands spot as the 4th line center. He wont float around like he did before, the writing is on the wall he wont be in the NHL much longer. If he doesnt play like he wants to be here then good riddance. He was a very effective player a couple years ago and fills a void where he can fight most tough guys left in the NHL.

He should be able to compensate for both Neil and Legger.

As much as you hate small players Pageau wins faceoffs and at his age will only get better at it. He doesnt play small either his compete level is off the charts and he must drive the other team mad.

He certainly dug himself a whole after Maclean got canned. He better light it up when he returns.
