Karmanos Looking to Sell Entire Team?

Looks like this one somehow slipped through the cracks a few days ago.

Hurricanes owner Pete Karmanos is in the same boat as Checketts. According to banking and NHL sources, he would really like to sell the entire team, not just the 49 per cent that belongs to the estate of a deceased partner.
This hasn't been reported anywhere else that I have seen, so I am taking it with a grain of salt, but it is the Globe and Mail. Obviously if true, it could be good or bad. Best case scenario: a buyer or group with local ties and deep pockets jumps in.

If true, JR had better hope for local ties or his job security along with his side kick Paul Maurice may not be around as long as they had possibly planned. Could be a good thing, in my opinion.

Also, it would be nice to potentially have an owner who would invest more interest, time and money into the franchise.

The one thing that always cracks me up about that comic layout is the glasses under the glasses.

But on topic...what happens if there's no takers locally? Or the possible new owner isn't so keen on a team in Carolina?

Right now, it looks like Peter Karmanos would like to sell, which is much more different than has to sell the team. Only when he grows bored of hockey, or the 'Canes start losing major money, then I don't think that Karmanos will be desperate to sell the 'Canes.

Who knows though. I frankly don't trust Peter Karmanos that much.

We can only hope that the GREAT Anton will bless us with new ownership - HIS! He will own, manage, and play for HIS (To be renamed) Hurricantons. If we all will it to be so it will be done.

If Mr. Blackberry (Balsillie) would buy and not move the team, that would be awesome... But both sides of that equation are dreams

I hope both sides are a dream. He definitely wouldn't keep the team in Raleigh, but I wouldn't be shocked to hear about him at least inquiring about it's availability.

I hope your post is the only time I see the Carolina Hurricanes and Balsillie mentioned in the same sentence. When it comes to his drive to own a franchise, Jim Balsillie is the devil.

The way he tried to screw over Phoenix, Nashville and even Pittsburgh? don't bank on it. The screw job he did in Pittsburgh was almost Art Modell worthy.

The only people that can even remotely stand the guy are the ultra-nationalist "Make it 7" tools. If he wanted a team so badly he'd go through the proper channels to get an expansion team. But with what he's done with 3 franchises now there's no way in hell that's happening.

He's not looking to build a winner, he's looking to buy a winner. Pittsburgh at the time was on the verge of making a real move in the standings over the next few years with the new Golden Boy Crosby. Nashville's always been good. And Phoenix has proven that with competent coaching and management they had the pieces in place to be a really good team. There's a reason you never hear his name associated with rumors involving Atlanta and Florida.

I still can't help but get scared when the talk of new ownership comes up. Karmanos has almost a stubborn loyalty to this market due to the way he left Hartford. He was going to be damned to make it work here and that kind of passion for the local market cannot be ignored in the search for a replacement. It's unfortunate that players in hockey rarely become as nationally famous and rich as basketball players do with endorsements, etc. like Jordan because we could probably put an ownership group with Francis, Brind'Amour, Wesley, Barrasso, etc. together to keep the team right here.

I just hate the idea of somebody sweeping in from out of town and immediately trying to find new ways to take our team away from us. I would never watch another hockey game again.

Bettman would never allow a semi successful sunbelt franchise leave. The Canes leaving Raleigh would be a huge indictment of the Bettman expansionistic regime. No franchise has ever relocated after winning a cup in that market.

Agree 110% with the bolded. Karmanos was slimey in his arena negotiations with Hartford. I don't think the NHL would be very interested in relocating one of the more successful southern teams. If Goodnight were to buy the Canes, he would immediately become the wealthiest owner in the NHL (I believe he is worth approx 8.7 billion) which would be a good thing. I could see him purchasing the Canes with the sole purpose of keeping them in Raleigh.
