My gut says "no", but stranger things have happened. With the direction NASCAR is headed, someone might want to diversify with a winter sport.

We would never hear the end of it.

But if Rick Hendrick bought the team we would be assured of 5 consecutive Cup, though we will likely cheat to achieve the streak.

Our alternate logo could be a checkered flag

We would have great concourse food places like "The Pit Stop"... and we would still have the Chase for the Cup

Is it possible that John Grahame foresaw the future in an alcohol-soaked haze?

so, on a serious note, how likely is the sale of the team going to happen?
i've never been a pk fan after what he did to my beloved whale.
while i understand the need to hold the line on spending if projected revenues don't meet expenditures, it would be nice to see us a little more involved with a few of the better free agents to help field a more competitive squad.

NASCAR teams are bleeding money. Sponsors are pulling out and the crowds are way down at races.

No way would a NASCAR team owner be looking for a second way to blow his money by buying an NHL team.

I never understood people's love affair with Nascar but to each their own. Like the Big Kahuna said, Nascar teams are bleeding money, sponsorships are way down. tv viewers are way down, and fannies in the seats at the races are down. I don't believe a Nascar team could afford the purchase and expenses.

I would be pretty sure that whoever owns the big speedway in Charlotte (and he or she may own other speedways but I don't know) would have the capital to buy the Canes.

I have no love affair with it and didn't know that teams were in such financial dire straits - I was still under the impression that the sport was booming as it was when they took races from tracks like Darlington and Rockingham for speedways in more populated areas. Didn't know, so I'd thought I'd ask - with most teams being based in NC, I thought somebody wanting to diversify their sports portfolio (as Earnhardt did when he purchased the Boll Weevils/Intimidators) may be interested.

As for Charlotte Motorspeedway, a quick bit of research shows that it's owned by Speedway Motorsports which also owns Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, and Texas Motor Speedway. SMI is controlled by the Smith family and CEO Bruton Smith, from Oakboro, NC, is worth about $1.4 billion, according to Forbes. However, he's also 83. His son is also involves in SMI - no clue how much of a stake or what his assets are.

If you thought Balsillie would be a bad idea involved with the Canes, then having Bruton Smith would be an absolute CATASTROPHE!!!! The only allegiance Bruton has is to the almighty dollar. If he thought he could make an extra "tree fiddy", he would have no qualms whatsoever in moving the team, ala Baltimore Colts in the middle of the night. You'd be better off in approaching Earnhardt Jr. if you were actually serious about trying to get a native North Carolinian NASCAR participant/owner - the boy has more money than god has ego, plus he's a potential hockey fan. I believe he has at least been to a Wild game. Definitely have seen him wearing the jersey...

Bruton Smith would be George Shinn-level bad for us. I don't want any part of that.

Eek. Pass on that then - sounds like someone we wouldn't want to touch with a 10 foot cattleprod. Ideally I'd love to see Jim Goodnight (again assuming the *entire* team is for sale and not just a minority stake), but again, I was just spitballing who could potentially have the capital and who'd be willing to keep the team in NC.

Forget Goodnight. The guy to pitch is John Sall, his co-founder at SAS. He's worth about $3B, far more than Karmanos, and grew up in IL.

Sall is older than Goodnight if I'm not mistaken too... Maybe he's ready for a late life project like the Canes?

Sall is younger than both Goodnight and Karmanos.
