Marleau looked better last night (at least on O), and he didn't keep doing that peel back thing. Not sure if was because he was skating with Joe and Heater or if he's reading this thread .

Marleau's lack of production doesn't have as much to do with his offensive strategies as it does with his conditioning. His turn-to-the-boards-and-look-for-the-best-passing-option move has been his favorite for YEARS. Don't kid yourself by claiming he didn't use it last year--he did.

The advantages of the move are that you can pull off some pretty deceptive back-hand passes for trailing forwards/defensemen. Also, your body position gives you good leverage if you want a powerful dump in the corner for a teammate. The most advantageous part of the move, though, is that you have momentum heading in the opposite direction in case your pass attempt is picked off and taken the other way. Considering Marleau's speed, the move has great benefits.

Speaking of speed, though...the reason it seems like he's doing this move a lot more this year is because, well, he IS. I don't think the reason for that is because of a strategic decision, though...he's just noticeably slower this year. Without his speed, it's a lot more difficult to drive the net, and a lot easier to taper off and wait for a passing lane to create a higher percentage play. One-on-one he's not a particularly good player considering his skill-set, so trying to dominate a defenseman or two wouldn't be particularly effective.

Bottom line: speed is Marleau's most effective attribute, and he simply doesn't seem to have it this year. I'm just assuming it's a lack of conditioning.

I'm not sure his speed has anything to do with it.

It's one thing to cut to the net. It's another to cut to the net, take a shot and skate right past. Patty seems to have a tendency to give up and coast away after the initial attack compared to someone like Couture who will double back after the initial attack and jump right back into the play.

Patrick Marleau is a bigger bust than Patrik Stefan.

Fatrick was a disaster tonight. Guy plays like he's been slamming double-doubles with a purple drank chaser.

Having Couture's line be #1 is nice, but if this continues for a long period of time people are going to get really mad about the contract status of the big 3.

Boyle has been pretty bad aswell.

It wouldnt surprise me if the majority of the big 3 are gone when their contracts expire.

The #1 line is essentially designated by the opposing coach.

But yeah, regardless, Heatley/Marleau really need to step it up.

I think it should be coined ("PMS" - Patrick Marleau Syndrome) considering Patty's been around longer and has had these issues far to often. It has effected many sharks players through the years too. Kinda like its contagious. Id say Doughty got a bad case of PMS, probably started a few weeks after playing agianst Marleau's line for the 1st time.

I don't know how JT isn't screaming at Heatley and Marleau.

"I send you feeds like Zeus and you either miss or fan. You guys are wack"

I remember one time either last season or the season before, where Marleau did exactly that- skated hard up the wing, put a weak backhander on net, and literally circled behind the net and coasted right out of the camera shot AND OUT OF THE ZONE.
