Do the Right Thing Sabres: Retire # 39

Whether or not Hasek left on bad terms or not, I think it is time for the team to bury the hatchet and recognize their greeatest player ever. I find it fantastical that they could retire #16 for a man who only played here a few seasons and then, with a straight face, overlook #39.

I recognize doing this would require Quinn to swallow a fair amount of crow and put his ego aside, but it is time. If you offer it and Hasek refuses, so be it. But we should have that # in the rafters.

Just my 2 cents.

Sabres playing well so must find something else to ***** about.

They've had issues with the greats of the organization in the past and eventually work those situations out as well. It will get retired at some point.

If Pegula buys the team. Quinn will likely no longer matter in the decision.

I agree completely. Hasek may have been a grade A *******, but he is still the greatest player to wear a Sabres sweater.

I just hope he's gracious enough to accept the honor.

I agree...Miller didn't take 39 just because Hasek wore it, and I don't think anyone else will request it or get it, so just do it already...He deserves it, even if he was a $%#*...

Can we at least wait until he isn't playing hockey before we get mad his number isn't retired?

He is currently playing in the KHL for HC Spartak Moscow.

I agree that 39 should be retired/ Does anyone think any of the retired #s should not have been? (I'm thinking aside from #2- I get why they did that).
But were Gare, Robert, Martin, Lafontaine all so great that no sabre should wear those #s again?
So in my mind 2 11 39...
I like how some other organizations have that ring of honor type classification and I could see all the other guys in that bracket- perhaps w/ a few more names in there.

To me, the player needs to exude some class and be great to have his number retired. Hasek only made it half way there in my book.

When they show a video montage the night of the ceremony, along with the amazing saves do they show him choking out Kelley? Darting to the locker room after that weak goal by Kasparitis? The "I will forever be a Red Wing" interview?

Fantastic player, arguably the best we've ever had. But a grade A douchebox and not someone I want as a "representation" of the franchise.

I wonder if he'd show up to the ceremony.

I question Robert, Martin, Lafontaine and Gare:

We have had many wonderful players, but niot many of Perraults and Hasek's ilk. Maybe none.

I wonder about Craig Ramsey due to his games played streak, Schoenfeld who meant as much as anybody.

I think Perrault is a no-brainer, Horton was more a nod to his entire career and an ode to his impact on the inmfancy of this franchise, Gare....... he is clearly in the Gray area.

Mike Ramsey really jumpos out as a possibility too.

I'm with the "he has to at least not be playing professional hockey anymore" before the number can be retired crowd.

Huh...."a grade A *****, a douchbox, etc."

So Hasek was a head case...so what. He is arguably the greatest goalie to ever put pads on. You want to say he's a jerk for demanding a trade, and to who....you want to blame anyone, blame the front office again. They botched the whole team up during that time. Why was our Captain treated like a piece of crap, why didn't they surround Hasek with the best players???? Huh???? How come a Rob Blake was never brought in, Brett Hull, Shannahan????

He sat around and watched how other teams brought in the hired guns, and never did we. We had the best goalie in the world, rode him all the way to the finals and then the front office did nothing except treat Peca like crap.

I'd of done the same thing Hasek did....had enough of the Sabres brass and bolted when I could!!!!

The guy's number will be retired one day, and he will show the same class he did when he was playing with the kids in his Amherst neighborhood!

I'll agree to retire Hasek's jersey if there is a concomitant ceremony to burn Slava Kozlov's.

Fair?

Absolutely not. He may be a top 3 goalie of all time and I'm happy he built that reputation here in Buffalo, but not a chance. "I am and will always be a redwing" is a direct quote from his presser when he left the Sabres. I totally respect his talent and realize he was good to the community but to the team itself he couldn't have been more disrespectful upon his departure.

Nope. Let the Redwings retire his number.

It's called the Sabres Hall of Fame. The only numbers hanging should be 2, 11 and 39. No one else did enough here to merit it, IMO.

This shouldn't even be questioned.
If we retired Patty La La's number, then Hasek should be a given. And it should have happend years ago.

Top 3 goalie of all time? Really? Man, you must not have seen him play.
Dominik Hasek, hands down, was the greatest goaltender to ever play the game of hockey, period.

He single handedly did things that no other goalie has ever, and I mean ever, done.
He carried this organization to the Stanley Cup Finals, and I might add, didn't loose the game, that was the refs, not him.

People can say what they like about Sawchuk, but he didn't play against the talent Hasek did and at the speed of the game Hasek had to.

Dominic Hasek was the greatest goaltender to ever sit between the pipes to date. This isn't even debatable when you take all of the variables into consideration.

While I agree with you that they should retire it, Hasek was playing years ago and still is. You typically wait for a player to retire before you retire his number. Hasek played last in the NHL in 07-08. Only three years ago.
