Meanwhile, PK Subban is a healthy scratch vs the Canes tonight.

I remember those days when Montreal fans were telling me PK was better than Meszaros and Coburn...

Ah memories...

Oh wait. That was a month ago.

I told them Subban wouldn't make our top 6; that he'd still be in the minors (because O'Donnell fills a niche we need mostly). They were ready to riot.

Watching the pens and caps on NHLN, is the video stuttering really badly for anyone else? Audio is fine.

Glad it's the Caps broadcast crew and not fooking Steigerwald.

It's fine for me and yes I'm happy it's the Caps broadcast crew.

And Green scored. The Caps finally on the board... I hope they come back and kills the Pens.

Good 2nd period between Caps and Pens. Both teams played some good hard hitting hockey.

Cooke is a moron tough. How the hell do you put your team 5 on 3 on PK.

Edit: Crosby with a nice one handed pass and Kunitz scored

Edit 2: Knuble with SH goal to tie the game at 2.

I can't tell you how many times I said "Mike Green is such a tool" during this game.

Remember when we tore our hair out trying to convince them that Giroux + JVR + picks isn't fair for Halak or Price? Yeah. I'm never doing anything like that again.

Subban needs to develop and learn. Right now, I think that won't happen until he adjusts his attitude.

As a little exercise, I've recreated the NHL standings at Holiday break last year.

And these are the current standings:

Flyers were tied for 27th place last year this time, a fact that is all too often missed and almost never mentioned whenever I see one of those "Top 10 Hockey Stories of the year" articles that are popping up all over the place right now and invariably includes the Boston series. Anyway, tremendous difference IMHO.

On the other hand, the Devils went from first place one year ago to last place this year. Absolutely atrocious.

Average goal differential for each team at this point in the season:

New Jersey is of course horrendous, but I find it kind of surprising that Tampa is actually losing games on average, and Washington is only rather slightly in the plus. Granted, they've been on a losing streak and the 7-0 shellacking the Rangers handed them influences that number.

They mention that Philly was 27-th to 29th quite frequently whenever the Flyers are on TSN.

I love that the Devils are so bad. Kovy and Lemaire are due to butt heads over his defensive play.

The guys over at Broadstreet hockey are having a poll for the best Flyers goal in the 2010 calender year. I'm actually having a tough time deciding, primarily between Briere's Game 1 goal against the Bruins, and The Shift by Richards. They both were very strong goals and represent the Flyers as a whole, but Briere's was more skillful while Richards' has importance in the game behind it.

Meltzer brings us his holiday presents: Surprises so far this season.

Quote:
1) The early emergence of Sergei Bobrovsky. I was not in favor of having the rookie start the season in the NHL. European goalies typically need a season to adjust to the angles on the smaller rink and young goalies in general usually benefit from experience in the AHL. But Bobrovsky's talent and work ethic have made his transition surprisingly smooth. He's hit some bumps in the road of late, but that's only to be expected.......
Quote:
2) The unexpected scoring prowess of Andreas Nodl. The Austrian's emergence this season just goes to show why sometimes a club needs to be patient with a player who struggles offensively his first couple seasons. Nodl came up as a scoring prospect and remade his game to be more defense-oriented; which prolonged his stay in the organization when the goals came more slowly than hoped at the AHL level and not at all with the big club.......
Quote:
3) The collective play of Andrej Meszaros and Sean O'Donnell. Meszaros has been worth his hefty salary and O'Donnell has shown that he still has something left in the tank. Before Chris Pronger went down, the combination of Meszaros and O'Donnell gave the Flyers their steadiest third pairing in many, many years.......
