If Garth is still going with the "plan" for next year, expect a bunch of teenagers to take on a **** load of pressure to perform above their limits.

Um, should management remain, the mistakes of last summer can't be repeated.

Our forwards are going NOWHERE unless Snow finds a way to get a whole line of veteran, proven 55+ point scorers in here.

Two would have been enough last summer, but this team needs a whole line of them heading into next season.

I dunno HOW the heck he plans on getting them??? Overpayment is all I can think of (whether they be UFAs or via trade), but fact is, our kiddies are going nowhere fast until they become more insulated and this team has scorers who can make things work and carry the chief responsibility.

We've mentioned this in a dozen other threads...

Get that done, the signed Dmen and goaltenders should be enough to get this team going and moving in a positive direction.

Well, under contract we have:
F: Tavares, Bailey (RFA), Okposo (RFA), Comeau (RFA), Hunter, Nielsen, Martin, Grabner (RFA), Schremp (RFA)
D: Streit, Eaton, Mottau, MacDonald, Hamonic
G: Dipietro

Possibles: De Haan, Hillen (RFA), Rakshani, Niederretter, Poulin

That is seriously depressing.

Now for the good news, with over $20M to spend before reaching the cap floor (more if it goes up as expected), and the RFAs not due for significant raises, the team will be forced to spend. Even if the team resigns Moulson we are looking at spending $15M that must be spent, with spots only for one dman and a couple of forwards and a backup goalie. I think we will end up with something like:

UFA-Tavares-Okposo
Moulson-Bailey-UFA
Comeau-Nielsen-Grabner
Hunter-Schremp-Martin

Streitt-MacDonald
UFA-Eaton
Mottau-Hamonic

DP
UFA

Still not a contender, probably not even a playoff team, but better than this year. Of course, when you are one of the worst teams ever, it almost has to be better.

I'd let go of a lot of the marginal players and the Isles can be a good team, even if they have to spend to the cap floor and no more. They will have 20 million dollars to spend and they need only FOUR forwards to be competitive, maybe three if they get the right ones.

For example:
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Tavares - ???
??? - Bailey - Okposo
Moulson - Nielsen - ???
Comeau - ??? - Hunter (Comeau could be an effective bottom six player)

defense: Streit, deHaan, Hamonic, MacDonald, Martinek, Eaton, Mottau
goal: DiPietro Poulin/Koskinen

trade in Feb: Roloson, Wisniewski, Martinek (Rolly just to save him, he deserves better) - expect LITTLE to nothing in return.

no need for: Schremp Parenteau Grabner Joensuu Gillies Konopka Sim Wisniewski Hillen Gervais Jurcina Reese

I wouldn't re-sign any of these guys despite how they play this year. These players will not make you better. There's only enough room for 2-3 "youngsters" at any time at forward, even when re-building and you have to think that Tavares, Bailey and RNH (or whoever) have the higher potential than anyone else

OPTIONS:
Maybe one of these players surprises and makes the roster next year in the top six:
Petrov, Niederreiter, Martin Ullstrom. I vote "NO" and sign TWO qwuality veteran forwards and overpay their going rate JUST TO SAVE THE SEASON.

I'd also sign TWO John Madden types for the 4th line. Speed, tenacity, PK. Easy to find, cheap, invaluable to this team though. Think a better Jon Sim.

That's it. It'll be hard to spend $20M.
With any competency at the GM level, you should be able to keep RNH in juniors, upgrade Mottau/Martinek with a veteran defenseman and add another forward.
FOUR players at $5 Million Each to reach the cap floor or slightly above.

But this was true the last two years as well....so let's keep our fingers crossed as we would at a slot machine.

Schremp and Hillen are 24.
Grabner and Joensuu are 23.

Yet you wouldn't bring them back even if they played reasonably well down the stretch?

To me, the next four months are about figuring out if any of these players are worth while. Schremp has 7 points in his last 6 games. If he keeps it up and shows he can be a 60 point player in the NHL, he is worth keeping around.

Tell these guys right now that this is their shot to prove they belong in the NHL. They are all young enough, and have shown glimpses (except Joensuu, who hasn't seen much NHL action). Not that I think these guys should be on the team next year, but they shouldn't be written off now.

If I'm Snow, I go into the locker room right now, tell my young players to forget the standings, forget the losses up to now, and go out and prove you belong in the NHL. Tell them that this is their chance to be an NHL player. If you want to play at this level, prove it over the next fifty games (at the same time, actually bringing in a couple of players to help would be nice).

"glimpses" for a 24 year old aren't worth investing in, imo.

if schremp, grabner, parenteau, joensuu show more promise over the rest of the season, in that, they show a higher upside, sustainable, than Bailey, Tavares, Okposo then I'd keep one. The roster is hemorrhaging for qulaity NHL players, proven NHl talent, in the top six.

The cost of that is choosing who to invest your development in.

That's obvious to me.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Nino Niederreiter
John Tavares
Josh Bailey
Kyle Okposo
Kirill Petrov

There isn't enough roster space for even these five when you consider you'll need AT LEAST 2, IDEALLY THREE actual NHL players to carry the load.

PLUS you have Nielsen and Moulson and possibly Comeau/Hunter (although they can play 4th line if need be)

don't fall in love with average scoring stats over a short timespan.

We've been so starved of NHL players for so long, fan expectations are so low that "glimpses" of positive play from a waiver prospect and marginal/limited player somehow seems like a viable investment option.

Can RNH play wing? If he can it'd be interesting to see if Garth picks him up. JT would have either Nino (the big, physical winger), or RNH (the speedy winger with the crazy wrist shot).

I'd be willing to sign the bolded players as long as their role is bottom six or bottom pairing for next season.

I agree about drafting Larsson. He seems to be the total package and I really believe our offensive struggles have to do with our pathetic excuse for a defensive unit.

I doubt Cizikas will be ready to step right into the NHL next season but I think he has promise as a strong bottom six player.

Signing Semin and Lieno are long shots at best, but right now the only thing Isles fans are left with is hope

I think Gabriel Landeskog is a guy to keep an eye on if we dont get the first pick and Larsson is gone

Why do so many people not want Grabner back? I'd be willing to bring him back for another year he's been fairly solid.
