What to do with McCabe?

sorry if this has been discussed already.
I really like what this guy has brought to the power play, he shoots and actually gets it through, he gets things moving, and although our special teams still dont thrill me, at least the pp looks a little better. long story short, I like him. buuut...

what happens after this season, is he a rental or someone that you could see staying for a while, canning 1 or more of Gilroy, MDZ, or Eminger, and waiting?

what is the plan for this guy do you think?

If he's willing to come back at a cheap price, MDZ-McCabe could be a nice point pairing next season. He's a veteran guy who can score, hit, and add leadership. The kind of guy a young team needs. I would love to re-sign him at a 1 year ~2m deal.

If he wouldn't mind playing for a very low salary, I would love to have him back on the third pair.

if he's willinig to take a hometeam discount fine otherwise good riddance. Sure he's an asset on the power play but at even strength he's borderline a liability, shorthanded he shouldnt even be an option. As a 3rd pairing, power play specialist i have no problem with it, just depends on how much its going to cost.

this is what i was thinking, he is aging so if he wants more than 2.5-3 for 3 years i would say no, but I would like to see him with one of the young guys

I would think something along the lines of 2.5-3.5 million for 1 year would be about what he will get. He still puts up points and has a lot of experience most teams desire in a veteran. He can play top-4 minutes and be a PP QB.

I will hold my judgement for a little while longer but if he continues to play the way he has been I wouldnt be opposed to a 1 year deal. Worst comes to worst he is dealt at the deadline or before for anything.

Love that he shoots, but I hate his defensive coverage. I'm not sure he fits well into this system and the Rangers can do better next season. Sure, hes still figuring his way onto this team but as far as what I've seen defensively... I'm not in love with it.

They need defenseman who can physically move people away from the top of the crease. Too many deflection goals every year. Staal and Girardi are rocks, I love Sauers game. MCDonaugh could be a gem. If you can find a bruiser and/or a guy who's got size and can get the puck on net, i'd try to go there first. Because Gilly will be gone most likely, and there's no telling what DZ will amount to next season. Besides, the plan is that he become the McCabe type guy.

Gilroy and Eminger's contracts are up after the season. Signing Macdaddy wouldn't be a bad thing, if the terms are right.

I'd love to bring him back if he's cheap and on a 1-year deal.

Actually, in all honesty, I may lean towards leaving the spot open on the left side and slide McCabe over to the right.....

Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
_______-McCabe
Del Zotto
Kundratek
Pashnin
McIlrath
Valentenko

Which is why you go out and try to get one for a year or two...or you see if Valentenko is ready.

Yes, he's the guy that the young team needs. Specifically, and most importantly Del Zotto.

DZ is the most important defenseman right now and he's huge for our future, obviously.

I would like him to stick around. A one year deal seems most appropriate.

pretty much, if Richards signs will Dallas there is no real #1 C as a UFA so at that point i would sign a Dman and McCabe fits on that list if cheap

First they go for Richards then resign RFA's then see if there is space for him or a another 5/6 dman that can help on the PP

I'm with most others. A one-year contract would be reasonable. Gotta figure Gilroy and possibly Eminger will be gone, so a spot is open. If by the end of training camp we decide to go in a different direction, we can just waive him or ship him off for a seventh or something.

I'd like to keep him at a lower price. I think he has helped out our power play alot, and he can be used as a role model for a guy like MDZ or McD

I will readily take him over Eminger, as long as the deal is cap-friendly.

Definitely. Eminger has shown times where he has been solid, But also times where he is a train wreck in his own end.

As was said if McCabe can be had for a reasonable price he should be resigned.

However, He cannot be paired with another offensive defenseman.

$1.75 mil on a 1 year deal, take it or leave it.... He's not strong enough defensively to warrant playing on our 2nd pairing, not when we've got Sauer & McDonagh playing so well... Can't justify paying him more to play a 3rd pairing role with some PP time...
