Shoalts is simply trying to find new fodder so he can keep beating the drum for the poor mistreated Canadian markets (who didn't have anyone the least bit interested in owning a team 15 years ago), now that his best target in Phoenix has passed him by. Shoalts is an idiot, he of the Oh My God, someone has a fake Brian Burke Twitter account investigative reporting.

They should add this part of the article to the original post to add some context.

Quote:
A spokesman for Prokhorov told NJ.com, “Mikhail currently has no plans to purchase any other sports teams. His priority now is building the Nets basketball team into a great franchise, and moving it to a new, state-of-the-art home at the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn,’’ the statement said.

I remember some billionaire wanting to buy the Coyotes and move them too... we see how well that worked out.

Not gonna happen - end of story. It's not about what the potential buyer wants to do - it's about what the NHL board of governors wants to do.

If Kovalchuk pans out (and all jokes aside, I do think he will), then it would make financial sense as the Devils would hopefully sell more tickets. You'd hope, anyway.

I don't think the the league would object to Prokhorov. He already owns a NBA franchise, and it always seems like guys who own a professional sports team have easier inroads in other leagues to acquire teams. That whole buddy buddy thing.

My first thought.

I was under the impression that Jeff Vanderbeek was the owner. Guess I was wrong?

That quote from Jeff Vanderbeek I think is being taken out of context.

It's probably a quote about trying to get the Nets to stay, not sell the Devils.

This is a stupid thread about a made up story.

I do recall a lot of ink spent on stories of JVB trying to keep the Nets. Remember up until March of this year it was unclear if Brooklyn would ever happen (and quite frankly, it shouldn't have - that eminent domain was an abuse and a cut-rate land grab for the rich). JVB is smart enough to know that more dates = more money.

Not only that, but I think that there still is a chance the Brooklyn project doesn't get completed.

That chance gets smaller and smaller all the time, but it's still possible.

heres a complete conspiracy theory, just for fun, cause it sounds ridiculous, say it with a from russian with love accent from the james bond movies.

we have Kovy=russian
we have russian billionaire wanting to buy team, assuming this happens...what happens next?

wait whos that russian winger who signed a one year deal out in washington? Semin?...lets get him, now what mister owner? we pick up russian center, but whos out there? malkin....

american Parise, we trade him to get Malkin

now we have russian superline Kovy-Malkin-Semin

with a russian owner

gives a whole new meaning to Devils army...especially since our jerseys are red...this could be the soviet union of the new era

ps: Urbom!...the name alone makes it happen

Speaking of Urbom, I hope we draft another swede this year even if we don't get Larssoned. Continue the migration.

I wonder if Lou thought that the roster pressed against the cap with a 9-19 record was too much or JVB gave Lou a call because I don't doubt that JVB has enough money but at some point it is kind of ridiculous to be paying however million he is for this product on ice.

I'm even more surprised by the amount of people who assume JVB pays any cost over runs out of pocket.

I'm sure the other owners have something to do with that, not to mention lines of credit and what not.

I don't know about the Devils potentially moving, but the Russian is a billionaire and seems to be passionate about sports. Not the worse possible thing that could happen. Heck, an American owned the Habs for a while.

It's definitely easier. The BoG is a good old boys club. The NHL would be tripping over themselves to entice Mark Cuban or Jerry Reinsdorf to buy a franchise.

I beg to differ. Mark Cuban? They wouldn't want him anywhere near the sport. He's too volatile and emotional for the political side of hockey.
