He's improved, but he remains pretty terrible. He can't throw. Howard ranked last in all qualified 1B in fielding pct last year. Now, he's definitely improved at picking the ball and all that jazz, but every time he throws the ball to 2nd you're flirting with disaster.

He's actually has a decent glove at first and has improved at making a stretch play on throws from third and short but your right his throws to 2nd are brutal. It's to the point where every time he takes a grounder and steps on first I pray he keeps it in his glove and walks to the mound and hands it off. The bad thing is, if he hasn't improved his throwing by now he most likely never will. Pair that with the fact that as he ages his lateral movement will slow down and his hamstrings will be tighter and you have a recipe for a major defensive liability.

Say what? The three years before his injury plagued 2010 season, his HR numbers were 47, 48, and 45. Seems pretty damn consistent to me.

Howard still played in 143 games and had only 31 home runs and 108 RBI's.

The year before, in 17 more games, he hit 45 home runs and had 141 RBI's.

That's a BIG drop. 17 missed games does not translate into the 14ish home runs and 33ish RBI's that is the difference between the two years.

His average stayed the same though, so he was getting his hits.

So an injury to his planting foot is just to be glossed over? Dude was at the top of the power categories before he went down and that's even before he got a chance to go on his late season surge. I'll take the three consistent years as indicative of his ability rather than the one injury year.

I felt it was pretty evident he couldn't drive the ball nearly as well once he came back at the end of the year. He was on one of his trademark monster tears beforehand.

I don't care for the Howard contract at all, but I think it's unfair to say his power's declining based on last year.

To me Howard has gotten better fielding but he still cant throw. i cringe whenever he throws to second for a double play or on a pickoff.

Ryan Howard was awful fielding last year. Sure he may pass the eye test, but stats don't lie.

In UZR/150, which basically combines all fielding statistics. Howard was -11.8, with only Troy Glaus and Paul Konerko below him among first basemen.

In ErrR (error runs above average), Howard tied for last among 1B with -2.4, withAdam Dunn and Troy Glaus.

In RngR (range runs above average), Howard was 2nd to last behind only Konerko with -10.

For those who like simple statistics among 1B, he had the most errors in the league.

Quite simply, Ryan Howard is an awful defensive 1B. Surprisingly, it was probably statistically his worst fielding season ever in the MLB and was a big decline from '09.

According to Heyman the Phillies have officially contacted the Nationals about Morse.

Yeah... Nats staff is a bit delusional if they think we are getting rid of Brown for someone like Morse.

Well Brown has yet to prove he can hit in the Majors. Mitch Williams thinks that he will be in the minors until he makes an adjustment in his swing.

Why wouldn't the Nats ask for Brown? They want to make it a deal the Phillies won't do. They've got no reason to trade Morse here.

Surprise this hasn't been discussed yet.

Jayson Werth: I Hate The Phillies

Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth is making it clear he resents that his old team signed Cliff Lee and not himself.

The Washington Post was at spring training with the Nationals', Werth's new team, when it caught an exchange between Werth and Nationals' general manager Mike Rizzo.

Post reporter Thomas Boswell makes it clear the trash talking was for the benefit of the press - and maybe sell a few tickets in Washington.

"Once Werth got back behind the cage, Rizzo said, 'I hate the [expletive] Phillies,'" Boswell recounts.

Rizzo then talked at length about how the Phillies used "dirty plays" in recent years

"I hate the Phillies, too," Werth added.

Yep, hold a grudge against a team that won you a championship. After all, it's not like winning a championship is something that every player strives for. Or it's not like the majority of MLB players will likely never win a championship.
