I guess Dave Montgomery told Ruben to balance the budget and Ruben is getting creative, lol.
Every penny helps! Suprised he couldn't just make a phone call and get whatever his kid wanted, he was actually shopping and paying like a poor schlub like me! I wonder if he put it on the company CC though.
They hit a snag? Was it really a snag or a cliff? Or the fact that he can't pass his physical?
My guess would be physical, considering they already had a deal in place. Unless Reyes backed out seeing how much money some relievers have been making.
im not thrilled with francsico playing but I wouldnt mind if they let Brown play against rhp. If he does well in a platoon then I would think about trying to let him play full time.
It would be super-sweet if they could get a half-decent OF for Blanton, but I am skeptical. Still, I'd move him and let Worley and Kendrick battle it out for the #5 job.
I don't think they'll be able to get a useful player for him but definitely a prospect or two. And that will happen eventually.
There's no real rush, and it essentially breaks down like this. If they want a pure salary dump, they could probably get some very mediocre prospects. If they're willing to eat some of his contract or take on an overpaid player where they'd still save a bit, they could get a useful guy back.
Brown and Gload are both lefties, so that's not really adding much to your platoon.

If they're willing to eat salary or get someone else overpaid, why get rid of Blanton in the first place? He'd be far and away the best #5.... ever?
People seem to forget that Ben Francisco has started before in this league and been more than serviceable. Will he light the world on fire and put up a .850 OPS? Probably not, but he won't be a black hole in the lineup either.

Exactly. He is not an All Star, but he could be perfect in a platoon.

i still cant get over his ab in the 6th inning of game 6. you cant k in that situation.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to think he's some scrub. He could start for quit a few teams in this league. He hit 15 hrs with cleveland before the trade.
I think he just needs regular playing time against lhp's. He'll be just fine. A lot like Werth platooning with Jenkins, before he proved he could be an everyday player.
I think we need another Right handed bat because Francisco might get a decent amount of playing time in Left for Ibanez. Not a prototypical platoon, but maybe about 60 games or so.
Blanton doesn't need to be moved right away. Teams are going to need a starter and I think the Phillies are going to be willing to eat some of his contract and/or maybe take on a pricey player who's contract is up at the end of the year. That's why Lee only makes $11 million this year. That gives them a little flexibility this year to set the team up going forward.
My biggest concern is the bullpen. I know our rotation lessens the need to have an awesome bullpen, but you still need a strong one to win in the playoffs.

^^:goodposting: It seems as if everyone has forgotten we won a WS with a platoon. Jenkins started 73 games in 2008. It's not quite the issue people are making it out to be.

We won in 2008 with Jayson Werth in right. We barely scraped into the playoffs with the platoon. Still, I agree it's not a huge issue for this team. My concern is that Francisco is our only RH OF bat (Mayberry is not a major-league player), when we potentially have LF and RF that might need to be platooned.
