You can literally see Bob think "Where the hell am I, what am I doing here, and who is that creepy drunk Santa next to me?!"

And, let's face it, Briere is a dirty SOB. If he wanted revenge, he would have gotten it.

I understand that, but the point was that Shelley and all the other goons that were taken on by the top teams at higher Cap hits were brought in as insurance... and it supposedly has been working. I wasn't calling for Shelley to get an instigation; I was saying that it all wouldn't have been necessary as it wouldn't have happened... in theory anyway.

Keep in mind that Richards and others have admitted to there being a problem which prompted Homer and other GMs to sign these players.

With that said, personally I could live without Shelley taking up Cap space and making other players up their TOI... although he is better than Cote was.

Briere doesn't forget. Prust likely has a speared set of huevos to look forward to next time.

Hmm wonder how Bettman feels the Flyers climb to the top of the heap? It should be interesting!

I don't think Briere wants to mess with Prust - he's a pretty tough customer.

Briere's balls are probably a little bigger when Jody Shelley is around.

As far as the game goes, here's a few observations:

-Richards was utterly fantastic. Killer on the PK, generating a lot of high-quality offensive chances, made a beautiful past for that first assist. Shame he didn't get a goal, but wow.

-Boucher looked shaky throughout the whole game to me. I think we were fortunate to be playing such a talentless forward squad (relatively speaking at least), but they're also fortunate that we were playing Boucher. Still, he only let one goal in and he did make a few great saves so props to him still. He's having a great month, but like when Leighton did it last year I feel lately it's been more about the defense helping him out then anything.

-I still hold the same stance on Zherdev that I used to. We should keep him around for this year just because he's a great secondary scorer and we need guys like him to round out this whole "top nine scoring lines" idea. With that said, he was kind of odd today. Got a couple of fantastic goals, but he still did his usual thing. Had a bunch of giveaways (in both the defensive and offensive zones), played some bad defense, and even took a bad penalty (although he redeemed himself or it almost immediately). Still, I really like the effort he displayed.

-Shelley was scratched. **** yeah. Also, Carbomb is a million times better then Shelley.
Boucher looked shaky?? I was at the game to and that thought never came to play in my mind at all. As for Zherdev I will agree with you here. But if the boogie man was dressed Danny would have been scratched. Hell it may be a good bet he is off the team next year. No great loss if you ask me one way or the other. This team just comes at you in waves. You could see the impact the Pronger had being out with the pairings on D. It may take some time for them to settle in together but all in all they did very well. OB played a decent game for being out so long. The rags could not gain the blue line most of the time. I do not know how many stretch passes they tried but their fans were freaking out. Man they ragged on Boyle and Rozie and for Z to bury 2 that really frosted their cornflakes.

Yeah, it's not a great stat, but for what it actually means, the number doesn't lie. His line has done good work.

Just another workmanlike victory, which is why this little stretch is so encouraging. They can check anyone, score on any goalie, win without really pushing themselves to the limit. They are good now and there is lots left in the tank.

As someone said on TSN the other night vs. Montreal about the Whipping Boy Line, if you consider Richards' the first line and Briere's the second, their third line in JVR, Carter and Zherdev - it doesn't get any better than that.... Couple that with a great deep D and solid goaltending and it's going to continue to be a fun year....

While I understand and agree with the point... and not to pick nits... but I don't see how they can call Richards' line the Number One Line. I believe Briere's line is clearly the First line and the one that has to draw the opposition's main attention.

The Richards line is often in a state of flux with players going in and out. In fact, I'd say only Briere's line is set and Bettsy's line is the next closest to being set when Shelley is dressed. The other two including Carter's or Giroux's -- depending who is a center that game -- mixes and matches... with Powe or Carbomb or Z dropping down to the Fourth line, meaning as many as three players go from top six player to a bottom three and back up... depending on Lavvy's rewarding or message sending.

... But I believe it is safe to say that Richie hasn't really centered the Top Line on a regular basis in quite a while... at least since some point in the middle of the last regular season. That being said we cannot argue with the point that the forward lines are stacked, and the D pairings are deep... and even add that there is the benefit of mixing and matching without losing a step.

And can it be argued that Lavvy is playing his roster like a fine fiddle with inserting and scratching the correct players and moving the proper players from the scoring lines to the checking fourth line... and managing his goalies pretty much as well as could be hoped?
