[NYI/CGY] Alex Tanguay for Aaron Ness

Straight up trade, no 10 player swap or anything ridiculous like that.

Tanguay has a friendly cap hit that Wang would be happy with and could take Parenteau's spot on the 1st line.

Ness could flourish with the relative lack of Flames defensive prospects besides Erixon and Brodie.

Thoughts?

Doesn't Tanguay have a NMC? Don't see him waiving it to go to the Island, as bad as the Flames are.

Yes. And he's stated he wants stability for his family (his wife just had a baby). So chances of him waiving it are next to nil.

The only possible scenario I see him waiving is at the trade deadline with the intention of re-signing with Calgary in the offseason, ala Joe Corvo.

Also, the Flames have zero want or desire for Aaron Ness. We have plenty of defensive prospects. Also, Tanguay would get FAR better than a prospect that doesn't even rank in the NYI top 20 prospects...

I'm also confused as hell to why the Islanders make this move considering their lack of defensive prospects, and its not like Tanguay will help their organization suddenly become better. You've committed to a rebuild, stick with it and don't trade prospects for older, soon to be UFA's.

We don't lack in defensive prospects, we lack in forward.

I realize that getting a quality winger for Tavares is (or should be),Snow's #1 priority, but I can't see him giving up Ness for 3 and 1/2 months of a rental.

and yeah,I know Ness and his father rejected the isles attempt to nudge Aaron out of the Minn. program last summer.

Islanders have been wanting a veteran winger to help Tavares but it appears they all have NTCs or NMCs. GMs really gotta stop handing those out to everyone.

At this point, year 4 of the Islanders rebuild, Ness is expendable. Macdonald and Hamonic look like keepers and DeHaan and Kessel both show promise (not to mention that Adam Larsson guy we may end up drafting).

Why does NYI do this? Even if Tanguay does waive his NMC for the Isle, there is no way he re-signs. They give up Ness for nothing.

CGY is probably better off with Tanguay anyways. He's doing pretty well there.

Haha the Flames probably have at least half a dozen defensive prospects better than Ness. Ness is also 5'10'' and 170lbs and thus unlikly to ever play in the NHL as a defenseman and especially not on the Calgary Flames.

I don't think the Flames even give this a thought... there is 0 need for a defensive prospect... and if there was we would be asking for someone with more potential (HF has at least 6 defensemen in the Isles organization ranked higher)... to be honest the only Isles prospect that interests me in Niederreiter... and I know better than going there

Ness may be expendable, but fans expecting Snow to trade him for a 3 and 1/2 month rental, obviously haven't been reading or watching Snow's recent interviews.

Why would Tanguay waive his NMC to play for one of the handful of teams *worse* than the Calgary Flames?

If he did, however, then I make a counter-offer of Tanguay for NYI 2nd round pick in 2011. No? Ktxhbye. Flames' only prospects of merit are at defense (even if they are career bottom three guys) they don't need more.

As an Isles fan, I'd love to see this happen, but agree with the Flames fans that is has little interest for them. If Tanguay is willing to waive his NTC for any team (which he'd have to be if he'd waive it for NYI), then they can get better value for him than Ness at the deadline.

Sadly, Ness doesn't have much value these days and is a longshot to ever be an NHLer, though he does have a mildly intriguing upside.

no reason whatsoever for the Flames to do this. Tanguay is playing great, and signed in Calgary to play with Jarome and give his famly some stability. Tanguay will probably be re-signed before the conclusion of the season.

I'm sure a team pushing for a playoff spot will give up a 2nd for Tanguay.

Unfortunately for nyi fans, the isles aren't pushing for a playoff spot.

Flames dont have a lack of defense prospects at all. We dont want to trade our most consistent forward for something we already have.

?

Erixon, Brodie, Pelech, Pardy, Negrin, Seabrook, Baldwin, Leach...

The Flames draft lots and lots of d-men.

you are aware Tanguay has bounced back this season after 1 poor season in Tampa right?... if Tanguay continues playing this way he would likely garner a 2nd+ at the deadline... maybe even a first since its a weak draft

This really doesn't work for either team.

1) The Flames are going to want more then Ness for Tanguay.

2) Tanguay is not going to waive his NTC.

3) The Isles are not in a position to a "rent" a player.

4) The Isles are not going to want to move any prospects or picks.

5) Tanguay is not the right fit for the Isles.

The Isles need a winger for sure. But my guess is they want someone who is signed to a longer term 2-3 seasons at least. I also think they want a winger who is a bit younger. The guy who seems to fit the mold the best is Dustin Penner. Now I know that the Isles would never be able to land him without making a significant offer to the Oilers but I am simply stating the player the Isles need is a guy like that. Proven ability and skill, some size, locked into a deal for several more years.

Yes the Isles need vets but they need to be careful to make sure it is the right vet.
