Euro Draftees a risk in '04?

In an article at espn.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/draft2...jim&id=1824443), Jim Kelly mentions that it might be hard to pry Ovechkin and other highly regarded Euros away from their teams b/c the NHL/IIHF agreement has expired (as was discussed here during the WJC).

Given that this agreement has expired, does anyone here think that this draft may be more NA slanted than in other years? Might a hot Euro prospect slide a number of spots, b/c of this potential issue? Or, with a lockout looming, do GMs ignore this fact, knowing that they have time to work out details with their counterparts in Europe?

Yea, I'm guessing Ovechkin slides to the mid-late 2nd round.

I don't think that changes sourse for a team like the Rangers/Detroit/Toronto ....Ovechukin will still be picked #1 whether it is Pitt or not ....

It'll only affect a player under contract, most of the European players who want to play in the NHL are signing one or two year contracts anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal. Far worse might be the possibility of some sort of cap...Europeans, particularly in the later rounds, might find it more economically viable to play in Europe...actually North Americans might find the same thing.

I agree the cap will keep alot of good European players in Europe. If I were Washington or the Penguins, I would just make the pick and with the lockout let the player just develop in Russia until there contract expires.

I think if teams are worried about 500'000 or so and suddenly start reaching to take NA players the NHL is in a lot more trouble then we think. But hey let them reach, I hope Barker, Ladd and Montoya go 3,4,5. I'd love to be at the table going "tukonen or Olesz, tukonen or Olesz, tukonen or Olesz, hmm....."
