Front page news!

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=347102

Quote:
A shakeup in Calgary is underway as the Flames announced Tuesday that Executive Vice-President and general manager Darryl Sutter is stepping down effective immediately.

Jay Feaster has been appointed Acting General Manager and will assume full and complete responsibilities for day to day hockey operations.

"Darryl has performed valuable service to the Calgary Flames organization for 8 years," said Flames President & CEO Ken King in a statement. "He was the leader that ignited a renaissance of Flames hockey, moving us from a non-playoff team to an organization that was viewed as a respected and popular contender each year. We thank Darryl for his leadership and his important contributions to re-establishing the Calgary Flames as a model franchise. As we enter the next phase of our growth in the NHL, we are restructuring our leadership and processes. We are pleased that Darryl has agreed to assist in an orderly transition and will provide his valuable guidance in the process. He remains dedicated to the success of the team he worked so hard to build".

The Flames are struggling along with a 16-18-3 record and sit 14th in the Western Conference entering play on Tuesday.

"We will move forward under a new administration with Jay leading our hockey operations as Acting General Manager," said King. "For the remainder of this season, Jay will be provided the opportunity to evaluate the team from the GM's chair and build a long term plan. We believe that while we continue to compete for a playoff position this season, this period will provide both the organization and Jay time to decide on critical future decisions."

Feaster joined the Flames this past July as Assistant general manager. He previously served as GM in Tampa Bay and helped lead the Lightning to their lone Stanley Cup title in franchise history in 2004.

This part concerns me:

Quote:
"We will move forward under a new administration with Jay leading our hockey operations as Acting General Manager," said King. "For the remainder of this season, Jay will be provided the opportunity to evaluate the team from the GM's chair and build a long term plan.
Frankly while Feaster may be a good "business guy" he should not have a hand in making hockey decisions.

And this part tells me a rebuild is all but imminent:

Quote:
We believe that while we continue to compete for a playoff position this season, this period will provide both the organization and Jay time to decide on critical future decisions."

I dunno about that. They fact that they are convinced they compete for a playoff spot is mind boggling.

While Darryl's resignation is a start (He's done some good work for the organization but now it's time to move on) Jay has to finish the job and find a new coach.

I guess it's time to break up the Sutterite colony.

You beat me too it as I also got the TSN alert text. This is the best news I have heard since the Flames started the season. I hope Feaster will learn not to give out NTC/NMC like it is candy and try to bring in a youth movement. Now the only other thing that would make me happy is a new coach.

As an Oilers fan I was hoping he stuck around a lot longer. Congratulations on getting rid of him. I will have to hope that Feaster thinks he can still win with Iggy and Kipper and the flames sink even further. I'm not happy for obvious reasons but what a christmas present for flames fans.

While it's remarkable that Sutter actually stepped down, I really hope the plan isn't to make Feaster the GM on a permanent basis. He'd be just as bad as Darryl in that regard.

It's a start at least.

Their talk about making the playoffs is all press mumbo-jumbo. They're not going to come right out and admit publicly their chances for the playoffs are slim to none. That wouldn't be good for business.
