Well he did the right thing. It'll be interesting to see who takes over.

Jim Nill would be my first choice, but I don't see it happening.

Brent Sutter better not get fired, he is a great coach and losing him will make things much worse.

I am also under the impression that A rebuild is not needed but we'll see what happens

Sorry but changing the GM doesn't mean this team got better and younger, this team is still mediocre and needs a change in direction.

If we can draft a top center this year then maybe the rebuild won't be long. Backlund can easily fill a number 2 center role in the future. Defense and goal isn't a problem so hence why I say a rebuild/retool wouldn't be say 5-7 years.

Great news. I will pass judgement on Feaster until the end of the season. I Want to se how the Feaster handles this teams roster for the short term.
I would like to see Brent remain as coach.

I'm really curious to see how Darryl leaving affects the team in the short term. Do the players loosen up? Do they start stringing a bunch of wins together? Was Darryl really a 'dark cloud' over the team?

As I said earlier, hopefully Feaster's mandate is to just sell and acquire as many picks as possible until the end of the season, similar to what Fletcher did in Toronto a few years ago. I'd prefer the next GM to be either Fenton from Nashville or Nill from the Wings. And should Brent be let go, I'd want Kirk Muller from the Habs as the next head coach.

And a big no Pierre McGuire. He may be great at scouting, but I really question his knowledge of the CBA, ability to interact with other GM's to make trades, basically his administrative abilities. It has to be a telling sign that despite numerous interviews for GM duties for various teams, he's never been offered a job in that capacity.

Also, an even bigger no to looking at guys like Hitchcock. Enough with the old dinosaurs club who don't understand post lockout hockey.

The chances of actually drafting a #1 centre and having him develop quickly is pretty poor.

And Backlund hasn't proven he can be a solid NHL player yet, much less a #2 centre.

We lack youth and talent, and most of our players are playing at a level less than thier salary cap and are regressing, not getting better.

We are hopelessly in need of a complwete overhaul in all phases of our team.

You'd be hard pressed to find a team with a roster/salary structure worse than ours. And it's been obvious we've been heading in this direction for over two years.

On the plus side, we have a stable ownership group and a solid fan base. So there should be light at the end of the tunnel.

You know what was a great moment in franchise history? Sutter taking the Flames to within an inch (literally, Nilson's shot off the crossbar) of the Stanley Cup in 2004.

While I'm happy Sutter is gone, he has done some wonderful things for hockey in this city.

As an Oilers fan, I would like to congratulate the Calgary flames on their recent turn around and look forward to seeing them excel with a real General Manager!

We went through the same thing with K-Lowe, so I know where you guys are coming from.

this is true, canada west will have all the strong teams in a few years.

It'll be no time for the Flames to be back in the mix and the Oil is looking strong.

why? he has NHL front office experience as an Assistant GM with the Whalers... he knows all the prospects, possibly as much as any scout... on top of that he knows all the scouts, which would make it easier for him to revamp our scouting staff... plus he would already know all the player agents... it's not like I'm suggesting Bob McKenzie who is strictly an NHL Insider... I'm suggesting a hockey man that has worked his way up in the ranks, who just happens to be on TV

That was almost 20 years ago though... and I think he was assistant manager for only a year or two. I just don't think you can throw a guy who hasn't been involved management (or any sort of hockey operations) since the early 90s. Now if Pierre had been working as an assist GM for the past few years and had been doing a decent job, I'd be singing a different tune. I just don't think you can jump from the broadcast both to the most powerful position of your career after a break spanning two decades.
