Former NHLer Nils Ekman Hospitalized with Stroke

Link to story in Swedish

Not too many details right now, he has been playing for Djurgardens in the Swedish Elite League. He is 34. My Swedish isn't too good so maybe someone else can give more detail.

Ekman suffered from stroke
Can get away season out
Nils Ekman may have finished playing for the season after he suffered during yesterday's suffered "headaches, numbness in one side of the body and balance disorders. "
- We call it stroke. The principle is that a poor blood flow to the brain may neurological symptoms, "said team physician Bengt Gustavsson Radiosporten

He showed great form against Skellefteå last post shutdown. But the next day (ie yesterday) was Nils Ekman, severe headaches, numbness in one side of the body and balance disorders and was taken by ambulance to hospital where he was examined closely and found to have a change in a blood vessel, which in turn affected the neurological function, writes DIF Hockey on their website.

- We call it stroke. The principle is that a poor blood flow to the brain may neurological symptoms, "says Djurgårdens team physician Bengt Gustavsson Radiosporten.

Probably, the season is completely over for Eckman, who according to Gustavsson forced to learn at least three months' rest.

WTH? Yikes... thankfully the guy got some decent medical attention... sounds like he's gonna be okay (no doubt on blood thinners for a while... so I doubt he'll be playing contact sports)

Least he's alive and sounds to have good use of his motor functions (on of the nasty possible side effects of strokes that freak me out )

Hope he gets well soon. Played only a few games on the Sharks, but made an impression for the faithfuls. I think he holds the franchise record for plus/minus in our bounce-back season.

Same guy. He caused great controversy when he slashed swedish junior Adam Larsson (i think it was him anyway) on the upper body, the assault was even reported to the police. But regardless of how hateful he was on the ice, I think everyone wishes him a swift recovery.

This.

We Frölunda fans hate Ekman because he basically tried to end Henrik Lundqvists career when he was playing in Sweden some years ago:

He is a cheap-shot artist, but i would never wish him a stroke. I really hope he recovers.

Serious: That is horrible. I hope he recovers.

Not serious: He played with Crosby, therefor Crosby causes strokes. See, Crosby is the root of all evil.

Updated story today. Nils Ekman will be unable to resume his hockey career, but is recovering well from his stroke.

from a poorly translated article

Quote:
Djurgårdens doctor Bengt Gustafsson explains how the situation is with Nils Ekman, who in December suffered a stroke.
- It's slowly but surely for the Nisse. If you were to see him today you would not notice a big difference in him from before the stroke. The speech has been normalized and the movement pattern is the same. He is however, very tired.
Quote:
-He is prohibited by neurologists at the Karolinska Hospital to play hockey again, says Bengt Gustafsson. Now is the time for the Nisse to find a life outside of the ice and keep in touch with hockey.
For the rest of the poorly-translated article (Including a part where it talks about Ekman being "hit by the stork" ). Go here

Didn't he score a hat-trick with the Pens in the 06-07 season?
