Edit: To clarify, we don't have many prospects. What we have is basically the young guys on the team. Any trade that gets rid of someone with JVR's potential so soon in his career is frowned upon here.
JVR is just starting to put it together. The Flyers are a team that's currently a veteran team but has a core of young guys, too. They are not looking at prospects and they are certainly not looking at trading early 20s guys for prospects.
The only way the Flyers would trade JVR would be for a last-piece type of guy.
Same sort of thing with all these people thinking the Kings are trying to move Schenn.
This is easily the most reasonable of the three but between this, the Flames proposal and the Leafs proposal from the offseason I am starting to question Canadian expertise in the world of hockey.
The Flyers are attempting to win the Stanley Cup now.
Vancouver is a good team, so the first round pick will be later in the first round.
A late first round draft pick will probably not make an impact until a few years from now.
So this trade would be counterproductive to winning soon, which this Flyers roster is built for.
Also, JvR is worth a hell of a lot more than a late first. He's putting it together now. He's been extremely impressive lately on both sides of the ice. His defensive game is seriously underrated, as he's using his large frame/reach and speed well in every zone. The more skilled two-way forwards the Flyers have the better, especially ones with the offensive ability of JvR.
This trade proposal would have been bad during his "slump", and right now it looks ridiculous.
20 years old. By the time he is 23 or 24, people wil look at all these JVR trade threads and chuckle....
I'm not a JVR hater but I do feel some people project him way too highly. He has tons of talent, but I don't see it translating into him being a PPG player. I think in a few years he will be a 50-60 pt guy, possibly reaching 30 goals at some point. That's very good, but the way some people scoff at the idea of trading JVR makes it seem as if he's on track to be a perennial PPG player.
Don't get me wrong. I have zero interest in trading him because he is young and cheap and that is CRITICAL on our team. Especially considering we have little to no forward prospects.
