Spacek and Hamrlik

Does anyone else notice that these two have been awful lately? It seems like Martin has been rewarding their brutal play with even more ice time. Constant giveaways, dumb penalties and terrible reads at crucial points in the game have cost us and yet Subban gets all the bad press at the end of the day. Maybe we should start pointing the finger at the veterans who are supposed to be the leaders on the ice. I understand our season isn't a write off after one bad road trip, but I mean we went from comfortable at the top of the east, to now looking like we may be in another battle for 8th spot.

Hopefully they will get Picard on waivers or to the minors and carry 7 D, sitting Gill/Hamrlik/Spacek from time to time to rest them and to have Weber, Wiz and Subban in with a healthy Gorges.

Wait till they have two good back-to-back games, then everybody's gonna be all like "they're leading this team during the absense of Markov, they're vital. Re-sign Hamrlik!"

They're terrible. Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

They look terrible probably because they are both over 35 years old, playing 22-23 minutes a game and stuck playing vs. other teams top lines.

Some people may, but I won't. Since I started this thread they've been on the ice for 2 goals and looked lost on both of them just as they have all year. I agree Gill needs to go as well, he causes at least a couple odd man rushes a game against by pinching at the wrong time and lacking the speed to get back in the play.

they simply can't play the 20+ minutes/night that Martin gives them at this stage of their career...

no coincidence that they started to play better right around when Markov came back, and even though it was only 7 games, it was enough to allow them to play the kind of minutes they need to play to be effective.

Adding wiz should help, but ultimately Martin would be wise to strategically give them nights off btw now and the end of the season so that they are as fresh as possible come the playoffs.

neither Harmlik nor Spacek are more useful than Weber or Picard when their age starts to show... might as well rest them and have them playing at "full strength" (in which case they are clearly our 2 best active dmen).

There is noone in house who can play the min these guys play we might aswell trade price and not ruin him because that is what will happen if subban and webber play more then 15min a game.

At the end of the day these guys are what we got and thats pretty much the bottom line you cant trade away two of your top 4 D mid season unless your mailing in the season and goin for a high draft pick.

There poor play is a result of markovs 25+ min of ice being spread around and them being the most capable of taking the extra time.

Spamrlik is the worst.

Edit: Well not really. Hamr's good for about 30-40 solid games before he gets tired and starts to play terribly. Spacek is the worst.

Even if they don't look good lately but I won't blame them. Like PK the poster said, they are both old, playing top minutes, against the top lines every games.

That said, usually when you pay 9M$ on 2 defensemen, they should be good enough to play top minutes on a long stretch but the Habs like to overpay old veteran.

The funny thing is Spacek isn't comfortable playing RD and has said it a few times. The Habs acquire a RD and have 3 LD and 3 RD dressed tonight. Yet Martin dresses Wiz on the left side beside a RD rookie in order to keep the struggling old pairing together. That pairing (along with a couple too many men penalties) absolutely killed the Habs tonight.

What will the solution be? Scratch Subban or Weber and play Wiz with Picard of course!

I love how we finally have enough guys to play on their proper sides and we have to righties in Wiz and Weber together, and two lefties in Hammer and Spacegoat.

Martin just refuses to split up Hammer and Spacek despite how poorly Space goat has played and how progressively worse this pair gets.

We need to cut down on the amount of slow old big defenseman we have. Two of Gill/Hamrlik/Spacek need to go.

Spacek has been getting hit by big checks a lot recently and one can only hope he gets a season-ending injury now. That would help.

LATELY? These two have been garbage for ages. We have so much tied up in them no wonder we can't make a move. No one in their right mind would take space goat, too bad we didn't just sign MAB for a fraction of the price and make him #7.

The team is just as bad offensively. What do you want, win games 1-0 all the time ?.

No these two have been shut down and offensive gods. Just ask Price!

For their pricetag we could have a real top pairing dman, a #7 scrub and change left over. We would be miles ahead and I can't wait to see these two kicking stones down the road to retirement.

Hammer was fine up until the last 10 games or so as the tough minutes he has had to play have piled on as the season has progressed.

Spacek has been horrid since game one of the season yet Martin loves the guy.

Do you give them credits when we win a game 3-1?

Of course not. They are not spectacular like PK so when we win, its not cool to talk how they shut down the opponent's first line.

Yeah, both of them are overpaid but blame the organization to give them that money. Can you blame them?

DO you realize that both of them are doing, what Markov should be doing? Hammer was doing well after Markov went down but do you expect he can keep up like that all season long? Price is getting tired, its obvious but can you blame him? He played so many games. Well its the same thing for Hammer and Spacek who are getting minutes that they shouldn't and both of them are getting ****ing old.
