Thrashers at. Devils 5PM - I Guess It's My Job Edition

vs.

December 31st, 2010: 5:00PM @ Prudential Center

THRASHERS (20-14-6) at DEVILS (9-25-2)

TV -- FS-South (HD), MSG (HD)

Last 10 -- Atlanta 4-3-3; New Jersey 1-9-0

Season series -- Second of four meetings this season. Eric Boulton recorded his first career hat trick as the Thrashers routed the Devils 7-1 in Atlanta on Dec. 18.

Projected Lineups
New Jersey Devils
Kovalchuk-Zajac-Tedenby
Elias-Arnott-Langenbrunner
Zharkov-Zubrus-Clarkson
Pelley-Mair-Sestito

White-Tallinder
Greene-Corrente
Salmela-Volchenkov

Johan Hedberg
Martin Brodeur

Atlanta Thrashers

Ladd-Peverley-Stewart
Kane-Burmistrov-Little
Boulton-Slater-Thorburn
Bergfors-Cormier-Modin

Byfuglien-Enstrom
Bogosian-Oduya
Hainsey-Sopel

Mason
Pavelec
-Going with the same combo's as last night because for the most part they probably will be, should Kane be good to go we all know who the odd man out will be. Stay Tuned.

Thrashers --After stumbling its way to four straight defeats, Atlanta picked up a critical 3-2 shootout win over Boston on Thursday, paying back the Bruins for a 4-1 loss at Boston one week earlier. Tobias Enstrom, who sometimes gets overlooked on the blue line now that Dustin Byfuglien is on the scene, proved he's a star in his own right with a pair of power-play goals in regulation. Tim Stapleton and Bryan Little connected in the penalty-shot tiebreaker, backing a stellar effort from Ondrej Pavelec (42 saves).

"Everybody knows Buff shoots the puck now, so maybe it's time for me to start shooting a little bit," Enstrom said. "It's always fun to help the team win."

Stats: Former Thrasher Johan Hedberg is scheduled to start in goal for the Devils. He will face Chris Mason, who will make his fourth start in the past 22 games.
Former Thrasher Ilya Kovalchuk is second on the Devils with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists). He is a minus-26.

Puck drop -- New Jersey has only one win during the month of December, a 3-0 victory over Phoenix on the 15th. This is the finale of a four-game homestand that has produced little more than frustration so far, although the players are doing their best to persevere.

"It's frustrating not winning again, but I guess we played pretty good," Zajac said after the latest defeat. "We put up almost 50 shots. We have to take some kind of positive out of this."

ATL 5 - Kane(2), Buff, Slater, Bogosian
NJD 2 - Zubrus, Kovalchuk

Hopefully this is as easy of a game as we're all expecting it to be. I hope Kovalchuk scores though.

Id like to see Bogosian do something this game...
GO THRASH!

I'm certainly not expecting to win. I would hope no one else is expecting an easy go of things.

Lemaire has turned the Devils around, effort-wise. We can't afford to slack or expect a cake walk, like we had earlier this month.

I want a solid effort from the team. Skate to the throat. I understand the team is exhausted, but we can't afford to drop this one.

Lets Go Thrashers!

Nice GDT Lynk! Keep doing them with hate in your heart!

Tough game ahead but I think we win. Hedberg will be ready to show management he's still got something left.

Makes for a good lineup on TV tho.....11 am, THRASH v. B's replay, 3:30 Bulldogs, 5:00 THRASH v. Devils.....

Mad Baby says hang on a few more days til a nice break boys!

Happy New Year from Mad Baby's crazy cousin:

Be safe tonight!

His defensive game is probably slightly better since hes left...its just the Devils this year are far worse than any of the thrashers recent teams.

+/- shouldnt be considered an individual statistic.

Looking for..

Kane to get back in the line-up

Anything from Cormier. Rather invisible the last 2 games. He's a rook, but if he wants to stay in the line-up he'll need to make some kind of impact.

A better showing from Hainsey and Oduya from last night.

A solid effort from Mason. With he and Moose it could be a higher scoring affair.

Keep the Devils away from our crease. Far to many goals this year coming from within 5 feet of our net.

A big win to finish out 2010!

I agree with this, but putting the number in context doesn't make Kovy look much better. He's 2nd in team points, but last in +/-. His +/- is so bad, that on NHL.com, he is relegated to his own page (player stats->team=nj Devils-> sort by +/-). Kovalchuk has 15 ES points (19pts-4ppp). That means the opposition has scored 41 goals (ES/SH) while he is on the ice. To push this farther, Kovalchuk has played 35 games, meaning the opposition has scored at a rate of 1.17 gpg while Kovy is on the ice. This (roughly) equates to costing his team 3 goals over the course of 60 min played by Kovalchuk, while only providing about 1.5 goals per60 min played. The next worse (according to my rudimentary numbers) Andy Greene's #s are better, but similar (35 ES/SH GA, ~.97 GA/G ). A difference of about 0.2 gpg, or around 16 goals for the whole season. Think about that, Kovy is on track to be on the ice for 16 more goals than the next guy on his team. Granted, some of this could be due to randomness and luck, but it is a clear continuation of a trend started in ATL. Kovalchuk hurts his team at even strength. (yes, I made a big assumption with the +/- #s...)

You can also look at it this way, of the six other players with 10 or more even strength points, Kovalchuk has a worse +/- by 1, 7, 8, 11, 11, and 18. The player with the -25, Andy Greene, #2 in D ToI, only has 10 ES points.

Yeah, but I was also suprised he hasn't end up with worse +/- even on his earlier days when the team also sucked pretty badly.

Cormier hasn't had much over 8 minutes a game. That's Eric Boulton numbers. He's poised with the puck and strong enough to get position. They are easing him in. Give it time. He's here to stay.

Burmistrov needs a goal ASAP.

I'm thinking that we don't see Kane until Florida. Hope I'm wrong, but his leg bowed pretty good .... like the injury Patrick Kane suffered.

Mason's gonna get a shutout tonight if the defense is half decent. No worries there.

FWIW, the Devils lineup was a little different last game, and I don't think it's going to change. Rolston isn't playing:

Ilya Kovalchuk-Travis Zajac-Mattias Tedenby
Patrik Elias-Jason Arnott-Jamie Langenbrunner
Vladimir Zharkov-Dainius Zubrus-David Clarkson
Rod Pelley-Adam Mair-Tim Sestito

Colin White-Henrik Tallinder
Andy Greene-Matt Corrente
Anssi Salmela-Anton Volchenkov
