When Radio-Canada/CBC was on strike several years back, I remember watching La Soirée du Hockey without any announcer or color commentator... and it was great. The only audio available was the fans and the on-ice action. It was just like being there!
I want that option on mah TV :]
It's hilarous that you post this but it's true. Maybe sport is a big con and television don't really need announcers to begin with. They needed announcers when it was on radio but maybe when they did the transfer to television they kept their old methods but shouldn't have. We see what is going on anyway, right.
If I wrote to RDS it would be about Pierre Houde talking instead of doing the play by play.
"Blah blah blah blah blah blah ET LE BUT!!!!"
Wtf dude describe the damn game.

Yes. That is annoying. Especially when they have a guest in the press box, like Despatie or Calvillo and Houde goes into Oprah mode and forgets all about the game (almost acting annoyed if he has to interrupt his in depth interview to interject a "Et le but!").
It's all great to want and desire the best guy out there to do the games but there's one problem. Most analysts people are saying that are great out there for any other sports, aren't asked to move all the time and not be with their family because the home town team is out. As a matter of fact, aside from Rodger Brulotte and Doucet who used to do it back in the days and McGuire and Dubé who are doing it now, nobody else does.
So not only they have to be great but also available and willing to be away from their loved ones.
Having said all of that, I don't have a whole lot of expectations as far as RDS is concerned. They are being told by everybody for 10ish years now that their sound sucks and I didn't see any improvement. And all their retransmissions from the studio that we all love and adore. I guess it's still a work in progress. A work that is really slow based on the fact that they have no competition.
I can assure you there are is no shortage of candidates willing to accept such a position despite the travel / family issues.
I really don't think the fans are particularly picky either; simply want someone who doesn't sound like a moron and who is able to express his thoughts and understanding of the game in a fashion that is easy on the ears.
For all the bad RDS is, look at how good it is. Every single Habs game, every single year. For free. Take that and shut up about the rest lol
Oh grow up. Most teams now have their games televised on TV on cable for free. Does not mean they show all the games for free that they should be bad. I will complain because it is bad, not because it's free.
Brunet and Rds are aware that some of the viewers are tired of his AK bashing. Honestly he can say whatever he want I dont care anymore I know he won't change
players of his generation dont like euro players( Russians on top of the list) because they take their jobs. He have zero problem with Russians superstar but in his mind the others should play in the KHL and leave their place to a north american players who care about the NHL.
In today game Pierre and Benoit talked about the young Thrashers players but they did't even mention Burmistrov. You will hear him say good things about Datsyuk, Ovy and Malkin but the rest are just talented players with no heart for him
That just makes him more of an idiot, and is a great reason why he should NOT have the job he has. The guy was injured 87% of the time he has a pro contract for **** sakes...
Oh, and OP, I'm pretty sure that by writing in english you lose credibility in RDS's eyes... they don't care about you as much as they care about the 3 millions french speaking quebecers that live in regions and never spoke a word of englihs (you get the idea).
If that's really the case then I hate him even more now. He'd rather the NHL instead of going for the best talent for 30 teams x 25 some odd players just go for home grown "talent".
I'd much rather guys like Kostitsyn playing who can actually do something than whichever AHLer would be playing in his place who never would have rightfully made the NHL in the first place had it not been for this lack of talent.
With the NHL being about the world and not just one country/area, it allows for talent of all nationalities to come over. I'm not saying the KHL won't sign a non-Russian but for the most part it's a Russian league not a true international one. While the NHL only resides in Canada/USA that's as a result of travel + market. Maybe one day we will see a European expansion but I won't hold my breath.
Regardless though it would be stupid if we didn't take all the moderately talented Russians/Euros just because we wanted to give spots to AHLers who otherwise wouldn't make the NHL if they weren't in that position. I just think it's stupid. So because people from Montreal, Toronto and Detroit (examples) might not be talented enough to make it we should just tell the more talented Russian non-superstars to all go home.
Same could be said bout TSN commentators voicing their hate for Max Lapierre and the Habs in general. And for Don Cherry for french canadian and european players.
Who cares.
lol @ op for voicing his displeasure about a service he pays for. Who does he think he is? This is an online forum where we talk about the sport of hockey. We don't have time for the childish nonsense that is consumer representation.
#1- picture quality: lags behind CBC, Versus, TSN, and especially NBC
#2- sound quality: same
#3- play by play: I prefer Houle to CBC, Versus, but NBC is better, and hands down TSN is the best. Houle still makes the same play calling errors, and NEVER corrects himself.
#4- color/in game analysis: TSN is the best hands down, RDS has made good strides with Bouchard. Brunnet is ok, but has a limited amount of game sign posts which he continually repeats. Needs more range and insight.
#4- pre-game- RDS is the weakest of all. After a legacy of 30 years or more of French broadcasting, they technically still cover hockey like it was 1972. There is no analysis of game strategy, no inside info on players, coaches, refs ice conditions etc....
#5- intermission- The “a la un” around the league is 100% mailed in by Francois Gagnon. He is better than that. Old news, nothing new... plus the fact that the stick he plays with in the intro looks like he just picked it off the rack at Rousseau’s bothers me. Tape the stick at least.... The section with Crete/Bouchard/Carbo is pretty good, much improved from previous attempts. The ask Bouchard section sucks...but that may be the questions asked more than the segment.
#6- Hockey coverage in general. RDS = poor . If it is not for Bouchard and Carboneau, they would be worthless. The general hockey IQ of the commentators on RDS is very weak. They over emphasize the French Canadian players on every team. Seriously... that is just a La ‘tit Vie way to see life. As well... they lack any inside info in general. It is always the same sources... traded Habs players, past Habs coaching staffs, and the 2 or 3 French guys in an organization. They need to widen the net. Talk to the other 90% of people involved in pro-hockey. They will not bite.
Overall, they have improved, but RDS is a loooong way from being a professional hockey broadcaster.
...I am sure I forgot to complain about something......
All of this is true… but what pisses me off the most is the ole 70’s way of broadcasting a game. Zoom the **** out!!! Geez, TVs aren’t 19 inches anymore!!! I’ve watched NCAA games where you can finally see all 10 players during an entire power play and loved it!
So tired of them zooming in on the puck carrier or in the corner during a battle for the puck… Who’s open for a pass? What are the d-men doing? What strategies are both team using?
I can bear with Binoit (especially since I to find AK to be nothing but a floater), but please ZOOM OUT!!!

I suspect this depends on the provider?
CBC HD is utter crap on Videotron. The RDS feed in image and sound quality is leaps and bounds better and that pisses me off cause I'd rather watch games on CBC when I can.

Half agree, half disagree. CBC hd's picture is pretty balls but their audio is better than RDS in my opinion.
It also really annoys me that practically the only thing in HD on RDS HD are the habs games. Pretty sad when even the pre-game is surrounded by black bars

You shouldn't even be able to ask this question. It's 2011 already, can't they buy HD cameras for their studios?? RDS is the biggest non-traditionnal channel in Quebec, and probably the only one that don't use HD cameras for their shows.

AK may not lead the team in goals but he leads the team with a +9. With his great depth of hockey knowledge, I'm surprised Brunet doesn't say AK is the best defensive player on the team because of this.
As for your letter to RDS I couldn't agree more but they just won't do anything about it but I guess it can't hurt. I wrote to them last year about the AK bashing like many of us here on HF and at least I got an answer (probably the same one everyone got I guess...).
I'd kill to have Martin McGuire and Dube broadcasting the games on TV.
The thing is not about Brunet being biased against certain players but more about the complete lack of quality of what RDS is showing. It looks like a old boys league with everyone being really comfortable and not anxious a bit about losing their job.
1. I am really not laughing when it's supposed to be funny.
2. Tired of seeing ex-players or coaches. You always need some but in a proper role. Too many of them always saying the same old ****. I don't think I ever watched a debate without facepalming.
3. Bouchard and Plante; see point 1.
All in all, it's not going to change anytime soon. So better get used to it, or switch to something less retarded if the game is on. RDS is on only during the games, on mute or with friends to prevent from headaches.
