Gibson, Aittokallio, Perhonen, Iilahti, Ullberg, Rajaniemi and Kolppanen. Very interesting...
Gibson's stats are not impressive at all. Perhonen, Iilahti and Rajaniemi are Mestis goalies at the moment. Kolppanen plays in MHL, the Russian junior league. Ullberg has more games in the FEL this season than rest of those guys combined. He's been SaiPa's starter in the last four and has played those games averaging 92,3 saving percentage. It's not far fetched to say, that Ullberg could be at least a 1a/1b goalie in a FEL team this year. And that should be more than enough to secure him a place in the discussion.

Ullberg looks nice right now, but he definitely seems a bit streaky. Can be good one night, absolute garbage the next. Right now he appears to have pretty nice SM-liiga stats, but his Jr-A performance has been far from impressive. He hasn't got nearly enough NT starts to draw a complete picture plus he's got bit of a negative personal history... enough to make the rounds in these talks but enough to win a spot? I know I don't dare to guess.

Considering our defense is going to be skilled yet inexperienced, they'd certainly benefit from a goalie who could be able to steal games on his own since that would be a royal boost to their confidence. Too bad that we don't seem to have one. If I've been reading the signs right, Aittokallio is the one who's currently offered the keys for the starter job by the team management and after him... well.

Honestly, it's a complete crapshoot. Though I'm sure that at least one of these guys making the rounds could do what Ortio did last year, meaning coming in with rather mediocre stats but just setting his mind right and finding his game where it counts. It's just up to Raipe & co figuring out (or more like guessing) who that guy might be.

when will Finland release preliminary roster? Russia and Canada did it already.

If you look at the stats, last time he was garbage against Kärpät a month ago. Recently he's been solid but he needs to keep it up.

Well, he was at the U18 Worlds last year. And this was after the incident. Plus he's played two U20 games this year (in the challenger team, perhaps?) and had 1.00 GAA.

One could make the argument, that he stole the game against Ässät last night (29 shots, one goal). But I don't think we need a goalie like that since our offense is so good and deep. We need a goalie who gives a chance to win. And based on recent performances Ullberg can do that.

If I understood correctly, four goalies will be picked to the first preliminary camp. If Ullberg is selected and doesn't make the team, fine. If he is not selected, I'd be pretty pissed.

First preliminary camp will start December 11th. So, probably this weekend or early next week.

This is all I was saying. I've got nothing against him, but in order to really be in contention, he needs to keep it up. Overall, his stats are highly comparable to Aittokallio for example.

Yep, this was the challenger team with seemingly "weaker" opposition. He hasn't been given a single shot directly under Raipe's eyes yet.

He should be among the four alright, since I don't see four guys on our side of the pond who have been doing better. But he hasn't done nothing yet that would single him out from the rest of the crop.

Our offense is good - but it's good as in it's fully comparable to the rest of the top countries for change, not above 'em. It can make the necessary goals to eke out a win, but if our guys start going coast-to-coast, we're still the more likely party to lose thanks to the D corps who've got the raw skill but not the refinement. We DO need more than a goalie who takes the necessary ones.

I wast just making an argument that the thieving incident wouldn't be a factor considering his U20 chances.

Who's spot will Ullberg take then, Gibson's or Aittokallio's? Gibson knows small rinks and he has the potential to take us far in WJC. Aittokallio experienced the WJC last year and has proven he's a good goalie.

What incident was Ullberg involved in??

Stole loads of money from his teammates while playing with HIFK A-Juniors.

Their stats for this season however are nothing impressive and are fully comparable for those of Ullberg, who might even have a slight edge judging by the way you look at things. He even posted his first career shutout vs. Tappara tonight, btw (despite eventually losing in SO). Oh, and SaiPa just loaned Myllyniemi to Pelicans, meaning Ullberg is their starter now. Things are looking up for the Tricky Dick.

It's just a feeling - but despite all this, Aittokallio and Gibson might still be the forerunners for the playing tandem, though.

I'd say Gibson's. He's been unimpressive this year in the Q. At least if you look at his stats. And I wouldn't overemphasize his experience with NA rinks either. Last year Ortio didn't have any and he did just great.

My tandem would be Aittokallio & Ullberg. Both play a game against North Americans, then i'ts time to decide the #1 goalie. Backup plays against Denmark, starter plays against the Czechs and the remaining games.

I'd think about taking Joonas Valkonen to WJC. 1+1 in two games in SM-league. Has played solid in every area and has some size also.

From Donskoi's interview at kärpät.fi
Quote:
Keiden kanssa uskot pelaavasi samassa ketjussa nuorten MM-kisoissa?

- Varmaan ja toivottavasti ”Härän” (Miikka Salomäki) ja (Joel) Armian kanssa.
So the first two lines will probably be:

Granlund - Granlund - Pulkkinen
Donskoi - Salomäki - Armia

I don't really like that. 1st line is awesome but 2nd.. Who moves the puck to Armia? I'd change Pulkkinen's and Armia's place.

Granlund - Granlund - Armia
Donskoi - Salomäki - Pulkkinen

Besides, Armia has lately been better than Pulkkinen.

Donskoi isn't completely handless.

Whole Ässät team has been better than Jokerit and it has showed. Pulkkinen having just as much issues as the whole team.

The way I see it, Pulkkinen needs someone to feed him in order for him to score goals, Armia doesn't. Donskoi and Salomäki might be good fits for him as they make room on the ice and Armia can deke and protect the puck, which he does so well.

I see even bigger problem. Who will be the scoring threat in the 3rd line?

Seconded

Armia has better individual skill and he doesn't necessary need a playmaker to score, Pulkkinen is much more relying on his shot which is huge and Granlund will help giving him awesome assists.

I'd also like to see Teräväinen in 3rd line, because as someone said there is no scoring threat. He is very good goal scorer and i see no problem trying him in there for a few games.

It’s possible that Teräväinen, Mustonen, Gibson and Partanen are out of the picture. Ullberg on the other hand seems to be strongly in consideration.

On what basis? In my books atleast Mustonen deserves a spot. Or are there injuries I don't know about.

And who do you think would be a better idea for a 4th line center/ energy winger than Mustonen? Guy has ferocious speed, works hard and has pretty good hands and shot.

So it seems that Iilahti and Gibson are still in the picture after all. One goalie and defenseman are dropped from the squad after the Vierumäki camp. Määttä and Gibson will join the group in NA where they finalize the roster by dropping one more defenseman and forward. A 3rd goalie is allowed as a substitute if one of the other 2 gets injured.
