LET'S GO KINGS !!!

Congrats to Maxim Kitsyn on GOLD !!!, Brayden Schenn on Silver, & Derek Forbort on Bronze at WJrC's.

NOTE : Regarding LARGE SIZE IMAGES / YELLOW RE-SIZE IMAGE BARS ABOVE PICS, let me offer up one nice little suggestion ...
This will get rid of those pesky yellow resize bars over the top of some larger pictures ... as they annoy the hell out of me and maybe they do you also ?
- Go into/click on your "USER CP" {control Panel} up top left in the red bars
- on the left under 'Settings & Options' click on "Edit Options"
- scroll down to 'Thread Display Options', and then 'Please Select the Resize Mode'
- click on the 'Drop Down List Box' over on the Right of 'Please Select the Resize Mode'
- select it to "KEEP ORIGINAL SIZE"
- SAVE your selections !
There ... now don't that look MUCH BETTER

After WJC it's back to boring ole Kings hockey. I haven't felt the sting of the current losing streak..feeling confident I won't have to. Doesn't mean I don't think we need a piece or two for the playoff run.

I'm not sure if it says anything good about the Kings, bad about the Kings, or anything at all about the Kings, that they're at where they're at in the standings while basically every team around them has 3, 4, 5 extra points because of those OT losses, which the Kings can't seem to get. Yet, the Kings are sitting 4th in the conference in wins. Some of those came in OT, but it's 2 points for a win either way.

Not getting to enough OTs will hurt the Kings, but the best indicator of a strong team is goal differential. The Kings are currently third in the conference at +20, they just need to start winning the 1 goal games again.

... Well, they're at +16, if you want to look at actual goals. It's still better than San Jose (+5), Dallas (+4), Phoenix (-4), and Anaheim (-13), so looking at winning the division is really the most realistic task for this team if they want a good seeding.

Vancouver's differential is +39, and they're just red-hot. Speaking of the Kings supposedly missing Willie Mitchell so much - doesn't look like the Canucks are missing him at all, are they? This is what points out the fallacy of using something team-related like wins to justify the worth of a single player. Detroit's differential is at +26, but their record is probably too much to overcome at this point.

I feel good about this one. Will be interesting to see Zues on the second line. The third line will be pretty quick with Clifford Stoll and Sturm as well.

Really hope Greene is feeling well by game time.

That is because they replaced him with Hamhuis. Ask Canuck fans if they missed having Mitchell in the playoffs last year.

Mitchell on the Kings this year, so far, is the difference between the playoffs and no playoffs.

Mitchell in the lineup means that the Kings defense is stellar 1 thru 4 and puts Greene where he belongs, the #5.

And, the statement accompanying the decision to start Bernier is pretty ridiculous too:

... Kirk McLean, from 96-97 to the end of his career, had a record of 3-6 against the Flyers. I don't get it. Murray is a ****ing idiot sometimes.

And, that's the whole thing. According to a post in a previous thread, supposedly if those of us who are online really knew something about hockey, we'd be working for a team. But yet, here's a guy who is a head coach in the NHL and he can't even remember the record of the player that he's using as an example to justify starting Bernier against Nashville.

I just expect these guys to know what I know; know what people who don't work for the team (or in the NHL) know. Can I teach an NHL player how to skate better, or improve his shot? No way. Do I know the game from the inside-out? Not really. But I DO know it from the outside-in, and I'm good with that. It's too bad that that's somehow looked down upon among the good-old-boys network (and that's what it is) of people who coach or GM in the NHL. Hell, I knew that playing Quick 72 games last season was idiotic; he'd never played anywhere close to that many in a season in his life. Hell, he played 71 games combined in the two seasons he was in the AHL and the ECHL. And, that is just one example.

What has 8 games got to do with it? His quote is fine. 8 games, 2 games, 50 games, doesn't matter when it comes to work ethic, which is what he was bagging on Sturm for. He didn't say Sturm wasn't playing well enough, he said Sturm wasn't working hard enough - BIG difference. A difference that has nothing to do with how many or few games a guy has played.

I'm not too worried that TM didn't correctly remember the stats of an obscure backup goalie. TM does a lot of things I find questionable and sometimes stupid, this one, though stupid, doesn't even rank on my list of things that matter.

... Not even when he's using it as part of a justification for starting a guy against a certain team? As if there's some sort of magic that Bernier has when facing the Predators? Don't get me wrong, I love that Bernier's getting the start, ANY start. But let's not be stupid here. There isn't any more to it than luck. Bernier's just as likely to be an oh-fer next season against Nashville as he is to continue his success.

As for Sturm, maybe he's just not 100% in game shape yet? Maybe he wanted to come back early to help his teammates out? Is this too much of a stretch to make after EIGHT games? Come on. You are better than this.

Its not called magic or luck its called confidence and it can make a big difference on how Bernier plays. You don't think Bernier feels bett going into a game playing a team that he has had past success against versus a team that blows him out?

Well... I kind of saw the McLean thing more as a story and less as a motive. Though it is there a little. If he was ignoring something obvious in front of his face because of a vague memory that turned out to be incorrect, I would be upset. However the stars have aligned for this one... its time for Bernier to get another start, the team has been playing a ton of games, and Bernier is unbeaten against Nashville. For a young goalie, in the most mentally challenging position in sports, I think there is an automatic confidence boost in getting the nod against Nashville considering his immediately previous record against them. I don't particularly care about next year right now.

I'm fine with the decision, and I'm fine with the idea that players can just have other team's numbers, even if Murray's example turned out to be laughably bad.

As for Sturm, maybe he's just not 100% in game shape yet? Maybe he wanted to come back early to help his teammates out? Is this too much of a stretch to make after EIGHT games? Come on. You are better than this.
I don't know what Sturm has looked like in practice, which it seems where this sentiment is mostly coming from. Again, the appearance of working hard... its hard to judge if someone is giving it their all... in middle school, I was slow and asthmatic and even though I tried my hardest, I got bad grades because my PE teacher thought I was just lazy. When the reality was I was giving myself fits (literally, fits of asthma attacks) because I wanted to not be so slow so badly, I tried my hardest... more than was healthy for me at the time, the very thing he was convinced I was not doing based off my poor results.

So its far from a perfect science... or any science, judging effort. However I only know what I've seen in games, and Murray there for the entirety of warm-ups, games, practices, training, etc, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt if he believes there is more that Sturm has to give in the effort department. I'm not saying he is definitely correct, just that this particular issue doesn't have much to do with how far removed from injury a player is, since we aren't talking about results here. If Sturm is still injured to the point where his best effort is noticeably less than it should be, then Sturm should say something to the trainers, coaching staff and management. Its a noble thing to try and come back from injury ASAP, but it can be detrimental to your team when you are taking up a roster spot if you aren't ready to play. You are also hurting yourself. So if that is the case, then I would hope Sturm would say "coach, I need another week to get into shape."

Quick gives us the best chance to win hockey games RIGHT NOW.

If TM wants to give Bernier a start, then it should be against Toronto on Monday.

Starting your weaker goaltender against an inter-conference team that you're battling for a playoff spot, makes no sense.

Does anyone have any idea what the deal is with Ponikarovsky? We're something like 16-5-1 with him and 6-11-0 without him.

Politely, I DISAGREE.

JB has had three great games in a row against Nashville, and if you are ever going to place credence in numbers, looking at a goalie or a pitcher's record against a particular team in the recent past is the time and place to do so.

I'm not a huge TM fan, but I clearly see the rationale in going with JB tonight.
