Draft Day Questions for Oilers Fans

Just wondering:

1) If the top 3 rated goalies are gobe by 14 as are Schremp, Picard and Thelen, do you go for the Finn Korpisoski? I would go for BPA and a skilled BPA if is Russian, Swede, Finn?

2) If all three top rated goalies are gone, would you draft a goalie or again go for a forward?

3) Any chance the Oilers take Martin Vagner in round 3 since he's slated to go from round 3-5?

1. I'd love to see Korpikoski as an Oiler. His bio oozes Oiler, plus he's a Finn and those guys are basically Edmonton kids.

2. If all three goalies are gone, it's Christmas day. If three G's go, then TWO of the guys we like will still be on the draft tree.

3. I'd forgotten about him to be honest. I'd like Brent if they took him, but wasn't there some kind of problem with Vagner? Didn't I read that Dallas (it is Dallas right?) didn't even make an effort to sign him?

If all 3 tenders are gone, as are the 3 skaters you mentioned, then Korpikowski wont be the BPA. Someone like Wolski or Radulov will likely be available. Isee Korpikowski going to Calgay at 19th.

If 3 goalies are gone by 14, no worries, they can still pick up a good tender in the 2nd round.

Vagner, dont know about him.

1) I still like Wolski, so I'd go with him.

2) There's the top 2 goaltenders, than about 7 guys who are all about the same, so goaltending I am not worried about. The Oilers can snag a decent tender at 44, and I think that is where they should pick one.

3) I don't mind taking a re-entry in the 3rd or 4th round... it depends. I'd personally like to take a guy who has fallen alot (maybe a guy projected to go in the top 40 that has completely fallen), and save picking a re-entry until the 4th round.

it's just my gut but I beleive the Oilers short list is Shcremp, Picard and wait for it ......Devan Dubnyk. That's providing Montoya and Shwartz are gone and no suprise players like Thelan or Stafford drop.

That is incorrect on Vagner lowetide. They tried to sign him and they couldn't work out a deal. There are some that think he didn't develop properly, but I only saw him play twice so I don't know for certain if he has regressed.

Dallas Morning News:"We just could not come to an agreement with him, so we decided the best alternative is to take the compensatory draft pick and move on," Stars GM Doug Armstrong said Monday.

The Stars had intense negotiations with the 20-year-old defenseman, but decided the asking price was too high.

He has been on back to back QMJHL entries in the Memorial Cup, but I don't know how significant his contributions have been to his team's success.

if that's the case - then a guy like Olesz or Stafford may have fallen to us - because three goalies and those three skaters makes up nearly half the way. Plus you add in that Malkin and Ovechkin are forsures at the top along with Barker and there's 9 guys right there, leaving Tukonen, Ladd, Meszaros, Olesz or Stafford for us to pick (which would be frickin great if we got any of them!). Korpikoski isn't really an option at 14 IMO - but I would absolutely love to get him at 25(which is unlikely).

for which pick? If Schwarz, Montoya, and Dubnyk are gone, I don't want to see a goalie called in the first FOR SURE. (because I could see a guy like Schantz falling to 44)

Beats me - I don't know enough about anything past probable seconds to venture an opinion - but the Oilers have shown they're willing to draft guys who re-entered.

Let's see: Ovechkin, Malkin, Schremp, Thelen, Picard, Montoya, Dubnyk, Schwarz + Tukonen, Olesz, Barker, Ladd = 12 players

That leaves (my preference order at that point would be): Wolski, Meszaros, Stafford, Radulov, Green, Valabik

I would take whoever was left from Wolski & Meszaros and then make a trade and move up from the 25th spot and take Stafford or Green or Valabik. I wouldn't be scared to have Meszaros and Green either as that would set up our defensive depth for years to come and allow us to focus on offensive players with the remaining draft picks, with FA signings or trades.

Would make for a VERY nice draft for us.
