Russo: Caps offer #1 for Bouwmeester, #7

Earlier this week, McPhee called Keenan and offered the No. 1 pick for defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and the No. 7 pick, according to a league source. Keenan quickly declined.

Do you think Keenan would trade Bouwmeester (and others) for a Russian?

Who said he was going to take the Russian?

Me thinks the ambiguity of the rumor reeks of BS.

No, but his predecessor certainly would have.

Keenan's favorite buddy in the NHL (that wasn't with him in New York) is arguably Pavel Bure, so why not?

Bure may still end up in a Panther uniform--if Russo's article a few weeks ago is true. However, I saw the Rocket in South Beach a month ago and was limping

HAHA! My thinking exactly. Some of the offers were just down right hilarious.

Regarding Russo's credibility: He predicted that Keenan would be back in the off season. Not too bad if you ask me.

If it would only take bouwmeester and Florida's 1st overall then I think the Panthers should do the deal in a heartbeat.

I'm going to go ahead and stick with McKenzie's version of events.

I'm not I have been reading Mike Russo for ever now and I have come to terms that about 99% if what he reports is true so I'm going with him

It just strikes me as funny that, when I consider all the GM/scout quotes I've read in the past week or so saying how much it would take to get the #1 pick from Washington that the offer as described as Russo was made by McPhee. It just doesn't jibe with me, sorry.

Lets take this source as a for instance.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/artic...622_095535_824
"He really doesn't have any choice. He has to take Ovechkin," says a fellow Eastern Conference executive. "He has no choice. Short of getting a Vince Lecavalier or a Dany Heatley in a trade, he has to take Ovechkin."

This is an NHL GM saying it would take Lecavalier or Heatley. None of the offers that you laugh at come close to including a Heatley or Lecavalier. So, who is wacked out here? the professional being quoted??? lol

It doesn't jive with me either.....Why would Mcphee be calling people and proposing a trade. If he did that he would be looking like he's desperate to get rid of the pick...that would put him in a disadvantage in trade talks. The undertaker doesn't work that way. If you have the first pick you have people call you, listen to their offers and then make counter offers. In negotiations this is called being in a position of power....That article makes no sense.

J-Bo is one of, if not the, best NHL prospects. Defensemen are worth more than forwards.

No offense, but that's kind of a dumb statement to make, depends on the team, and on the players. Ask Tampa who were the keys to their Stanley cup winning team, and they'd probably respond Richards, Lecavalier, St.Louis, Khabibulin, Modin, and then Boyle and Kubina.

Shut down defensemen are easier to find than a truly elite franchise playmaking center. Defense relies on a team concept, you can plug defensemen in their, NJ has done it for years. Not to say that a top tier defensemen does not make a difference, they are just easier to find. In the end the jump between having one great defensmen, even a Scott Stevens in his prime, on your team as opposed to a few very good defensemen and the jump between a Mario, Gretzky or LeCalvier on your team as opposed to the next tier, there is no contest.

Take the playmaking forward everytime. They can not win it alone (Mario spent years with a cellar dwelling team until they got more parts to surround him, winning scoring titles and flirting with 200 point seasons all along) but are much harder to find than those pieces on defense.

If the JBO and #1 thing is true, I would only do it if the deal is:

#1 overall, #27 overall

for

Bouwmeester, #7 overall

That way, Fla ends up with Ovechkin and Dubnyk or Jeff Schultz and WAS ends up with Bouwmeester and Olesz or something to that effect. Valuewise, the second pair is better IMO but Ovechkin is too appealing so I'd do it but only with WAS #27 coming back cause JBO could go for Ovechkin straight up.
