Caps good in own zone.
good in neutral zone.
cant get transition to offense with any regularity or consistency.

it will come.
Nicky is the no.1 guy that needs to get that going, the other big guns will follow.
Green needs to keep backing himself when he is the best option to rush it in. Has been good.

opposing teams are standing up at the blue and really shadowing Ovi well this season. he hasnt had the grind factor that hes had in years past. im sure he will correct it.

just wondering, what are peoples thoughts on Ovi's game and whether he is purposely going at about 80% or so? it could be the case... i mean, hes going at 100% plenty of the time too, but could it be a strategy to keep him fresh? is the hand problem more serious? does he have groin issues?

not TOO much was given away in 24/7 obviously, but im expecting come playoff time that the old Ovi will return in full flight. Are others getting that?

Cortez thats the million dollar question. I personally think Ovi is largely at full health and what we are seeing with him not producing at least years pace is a bunch of things. Teams are defending him differently. He has been asked to run the offense through Nick. But Nick has largely been MIA most of the year. Thats one reason why I want to see MJ get some time there, its not really Ovi's game just yet. He is too physical for the modern day NHL so he is playing differently. He has been forced to tone it down and it sucks for us. And now he even has to shave daily. That is not him.

The fumbling and bumbling of pucks is a cause of concern but I think its because he has been lifting his head up to pass, to find Nick. Not an injury.

i tend to agree with most of this. i think the caps want backstrom to carry the puck more because of the way the opposition is now checking ovechkin. playing without the puck allows him to find open space. that nick has been so bad this season cant be helping, if thats the plan.

on the other hand 8 has had more than enough time and space to score a hell of a lot more than what he has. this is where the whiffing ov comes into play. i cant believe he is just gripping to tight. could be that the breakdown in confidence that was seen team wide during the losing streak remains deeply embedded in ovechkin backstrom and semin. as the team has lifted itself free and believes in themselves, its not true of the big guns.

semin is hurt. has been. that may be his problem. ovechkin is dinged, but i am less sure that its fully responsible for where his game has gone. backstrom? remember the chubby sophmore backstrom? this reminds of that only worse, because he is not playing himself into shape.

mcphee must be quaking in his gm shoes if $17m of his payroll has completely lost its ability to play to their contract level.

if theres one thing Ovi is generally not, its elusive. he is a big big rig and he only really has his get-around player moves when he is flying.

I reckon this situation applies to Kovalchuk as well. they are trying to be more team players and forcing them to start moving from not much when they get the puck. The previous years versions of both of these players would get the puck either in our zone or with speed through the neutral zone and create plays that way.

That doesnt explain the high number of whiffs on pucks and the 'less than Ovechkin like' accuracy.. but i think it has some merit to it.

Watching Ovi play, he seems to be leaning back on his shots more than shifting his weight forward, which is losing velocity and he is over compensating for it by trying to shoot harder and hes losing his accuracy. But im just a hockey fan from Australia who has never been to a live game so what do i know.

Ovi is not an elusive playmaker. he passes very well but in reality, he is a power forward goal scorer. His willingness to round out his game this season is commendable, but at the end of the day, the team is better off when he is dipping his shoulder, bending his knees and driving the net. Thats how he won his Harts, thats how the Caps became a contender.

side question:

who would u pick up?
my goalies are Rinne, Neuvirth, Luongo, Anderson

I want to drop Neuvirth.

Schneider - getting starts, playing very well.
Reimer - playing great but its leafs and he might get sent down.
Boucher - getting starts lately but how long will it last.

im leaning towards Schneider... Looks like they are being safe with Luongo this season and he might get 20 starts. id have Vancouver covered then but hmm.... decisions...

Not sure why you’d drop Neuvy. He’s young and has been very good. Kept them in the game yesterday or it would have been a rout before the end of the first.

i don’t know that his stats tell the story tho. yes, he struggled, but he’s rarely been the big problem. the team as a whole was awful in december. he’s a young rookie and I think it’d be a big mistake to give up on the kid the early. he’s shown tremendous poise for someone so young and under so much pressure and that by itself is a tough thing to find.

schneider, on the other hand, has been playing behind the hottest team in the nhl. tough to compare.

no need to be snarky. call if fantasy if you want, but i think you dump him now, half way thru his rookie season and you live to regret it. you don’t know what will come of either guy. think about mason, won a calder trophy and his been awful ever since. rookie goalies, especially very young ones can rise or fall over the next few seasons.

Saw 2 gentlemen wearing Caps jersey's today while I was in Blue Sky Basin (Winter Classic Carlson & Home Red Bäckström). If that was any of you, I was the idiot in the red jacket and silver helmet . For the record, I didn't see any other jersey's on the hill. LETS GO CAPS!
