Brett Clark

While it's early and the fact that we have seen plenty of players impress at first only to sink as the season goes, I have to say that I like the signing of Clark.

He is the unsung hero kind of player, who doesn't get any attention but does his work. Yet it seemed like he did play poorly over at Colorado before joining us, maybe Bouchers system does fit him better?

I feel he is the solid veteran guy we have lacked, a Cory Sarich player (when he was good), doesn't make spectacular things but keeps it simple.

Maybe Frenchy can spread some light on mystery man Clark?

The thing with Clark is that he's awesome as a lower-tier guy. Unfortunately for Avs fans, management and our coaching staff thought he was a top-pairing guy and loaded on the minutes. This basically caused every major error and brain cramp to become a highlight reel chance for the opposition's number one line.

If he can play with another steady defensive guy, with moderate minutes, he can really shine.

Much more solid offensively than Sarich, not quite as physical

So far a good signing. SFY didn't get the flashiest free agent in Brett Clark, but it looks like he did get the right guy to fit in well here. He's been solid and great all around.

This, pretty much. I've been trying to figure this guy out for years.

He has loads of talent, but doesn't seem to be an appropriate fit in a versatile, minute heavy role.

Limit his role, and his ice time, and he'll get the job done.

That's not really what I understand by "limiting his role and ice time". In fact he's been a pretty solid #2-3 D-man for us. He's earned the props so far.

I meant limited in the sense that he's not a traditional top pairing guy. He's not a heavy minute, all-around player. That's all I was getting at.

There's only 7 defensemen (and no Ohlund yet) who have dressed for us this season. The numbers you show me, also don't indicate a whole lot (to me) at this point.

He only has 1pt in the last 5 games, and he's 4th in terms of avg PK time. There's too few D for him not to play, especially with all the penalties we've been taking.

I've followed his career for about a decade now, and he has sort of an odd niche, which he succeeds in, so long as he's not 'the' defenseman on the team.

Ray Whitney comes to mind as a comparison. He's a very good complementary player, but he's not the guy you want leading your offense.

Good signing so far, but I don't get why he's in the #1 PP unit, put Kubina or if not give a chance to Hedman.

He was hated in Colorado by everyone (including me) because he sucked in the offensive game. He was good at blocking shots and thats about it

I don't think the comparison with Sarich is good on Clark. One is a physical defenseman and the other is an offensive defenseman. The thing with Clark is that he's playing well and with 2 goals he get time in PP and looks happy with this system when you read the interviews about him. Let's see what happen when Ohlund be back, the thing right now is that he's not the best defensive defenseman but he's a veteran who can get some points and don't make stupid plays with the puck.

He and Hedman have worked really well on a pairing. Can't argue with 2 goals either.

...It's true that he was good at blocking shots , but at one point that's all he was doing , he was always laying on the ice all the time . So much that at one point we had a nickname for him ... Zamboni. Later, one of the poster on the avs section called him Clark Kent ( Cant ) , he can't skate fast , he cant play defence he cant score , cant this he can't that . Then at one point it was turnovers after turnovers , he was driving us nuts, always losing the puck in our zone or skating to get the puck in the corner , when it's coming infront of the net .

True that he was our scapegoat but trust me he did everything in his power to earn this title.

Long story short , The Clark i'm seeing this year, with Tampa and the one we had with the Avs , it's night and day , unbelievable .... he look like Raymond Bourque , compare to what we had .

Great signing and a cheap price. Once Ohlund comes back and Vernace can go to Norfolk I will really like our defense.

He's been good in almost all facets of the game. He's kind of been a very poor man's Nick Lidstrom, which I'm fine with.

SSS, small sample size. This isn't something that will continue long term I think, and if it does continue you'll see his numbers dip more.

Hedman still needs to work on shot selection a bit.

I'm aware of that but that's all we've got for now. Sure, it probably won't last once Ohlund returns. Clark is pretty much filling in for Ohlund on the PP and is eating Ohlund's minutes at even strength. But so far he's been one of our top3 D-men. Given that he was proclaimed as one of the worst D-men in the NHL by most of HF (yeah, I know...) you'd at least expect Lundin to outplay him. Respect where it's due.

Avalanche fan coming in peace. I'm interested in how Brett Clark is doing in Tampa. Any update now that you've seen him for three months? Judging by your GDTs, he is paired with Hedman even-strength and has been getting first-unit power play time--is this accurate?

He's been solid ES and good on the PP. Doesn't hit a lot but that's not a big deal. I'm glad we have him.
