I just watched torts post game, I hope not, but I bet he gets a small fine for what he says about the staal incident.

Tort's response when asked about it was something along the lines of that is a dangerous play and I was pissed that neither ref saw it and then we end up down, but I don't care, I don't blame Staal for retaliating, if that happened to me, I'd do the same thing, i'd probably try and break his ankle. That may be what he gets fined for I don't know seems like something the NHL would not like out in public.

Also Dave Maloney talked about the officiating doesn't really read the games anymore they go more about technicalities, I think I agree with that statement.

you can watch torts post game press conference on http://rangers.nhl.tv

Great team effort all around. The Boyle-Prust-Tank line was outstanding.

The Good: Wolski, Lundqvist, Boyle, Prust, Fedetenko, Gilroy/McDonagh

The Bad: Ridicuouls penalty on Drury, like he meant to send the puck out of play!

It is kind of funny how your perception of a game can change depending on what team you're cheering for.

I felt the game was pretty exciting, with the Rangers playing hard, hitting lots, pressuring the puck and creating turnovers, getting lots of good scoring chances.

Canucks fans feel that the Rangers trapped and it was boring and terrible.

I don't really think the Rangers trapped...they forechecked hard most of the night, but they do try to cut off the lanes in the neutral zone when they can so that teams can't easily get through. Which makes for a pretty boring game if your team is constantly turning the puck over or losing it in the neutral zone.

We had to play a solid defensive game against the hottest team in the league, especially when we can't score more than one goal.
I'd like to see the same effort against Philthy on sunday.

They didnt really fall back into a defensive posture until midway through the third i thought. When they had a chance to forecheck they did. When Vancouver started activating their D a little it forced the Rangers to keep men back.

True about the perception, good point. I could see how it could be frustrating for them but Torts system is anything but a pure trap...

Yeah I just remember being on the receiving end of some of those games. It wasn't that the other team wasn't generating offense themselves, it was that the Rangers had nothing going at all and would just be constantly turning the puck over, so it was really boring to watch as a Rangers fan.

Just watching the replay...(I was at a licensing class last night)...the Rangers were very good in the 2nd period, and Schneider kept the Canucks in it. He had big saves on Gaborik and Dubinsky. And, Stepan hit a post.

We can bury some open net chances. But other than that what a terrific game.

What a game! The whole team really put forth a solid effort from start to finish and played a terrific team game. Staal and Girardi maybe played their best game this season with respect to who they were out there against. They took care of all the lanes and played solid in front of the net. Same goes for the checking unit of Prust, Boyle and Fedotenko. Solid defensively. Also thought Eminger played exceptional and was a physical presence. He does get a little out of position at times though. Avery played a strong game I thought when he was out there also, good grinding boards work. Gaborik was skating hard and he'll break out of this slump. I'm not so sure if I like Stepan or Anisimov over there though. I think Anisimov with Gabby and Wolski had more offensive zone pressure at even strength the last few games then Stepan had in this one with the two wings. I think Wolski has put together two solid games with us. The PP was much better also.

The Garden has been much more intense the last two games I've been too. I haven't been at too many games this year as opposed to recent years but these last two games have had great fan support. A LOT of Canucks fan though at the game. I didn't know so many would be there.

Canucks fans are a far cry from Habs fans...

You'd think Canucks fans would be bitter, sore losers and crybabies after the "lowly Rangers" ended their streak in a 1-0 game that had USA chants going (lol)... but no. Several fans come in here, hat in hand and congratulate us on the win and how our team has played this season. You don't see that type of respect that often.

I'm very impressed with how some of their fans have acted (save for a few on the main board, including some from our fanbase). Habs fans would never be commending us on a win like this.

Anyway...

The Good: Lundqvist has bounced back after a bad goal or game numerous times this season (even when it wasn't that bad) and has looked simply stellar lately. Rangers finally look like they have an identity and are a team instead of a group of mercenaries. Boyle is fearless, Fedotenko is fearless. Our young and modest defense plays with a swagger and snarl as if they had Pronger, Niedermeyer and Lidstrom on it. Our youth on the forward lines have shown their creativity and their love of the game with making great plays and setups. Wolski has been great so far, MZA is amazing, Stepan is developing well. Anisimov has grown into his body well.

Dubinsky has emerged as a junior Jaromir Jagr with his dekes and nice play in the offensive zone and his leadership on the ice.

Tortorella has been quite the coach. Definitely looks like he's more relaxed. Maybe he's poppin Xanax or something before games but he's chilled out, loose, and confident in his team and that translates onto the ice very well.

The Bad: We have trouble finishing. It always seems like we can never finish our chances (for years now this has been a problem). You see the team make such nice plays but can never just close it out and put it in the net. Frustrating to watch for sure because you know they're capable of it. Gaborik's confidence is really hurt right now. It's not like the guy is taking nights off or anything, he just can't buy a goal. He seems like he's got a very sensitive head or is thin-skinned. Looks like a guy that beats himself up over it and just makes things worse. His skating tonight looked much better though.

The Redden: We're probably the hardest working team in the NHL, with blocking shots, and grinding games out to win 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 (in OT), taking and throwing big hits... you wonder when the injuries or all this effort will take its toll. Will the Rangers be able to keep their intensity level in 5th gear all season and perhaps deep into the playoffs? Just have to pray no one else gets hurt.

Eh, when your team is the best in the league, you can afford to be magnanimous in defeat. Even our loss the other day to montreal didn't start any of the usual rants. It's almost as if we are starting to expect this team to when, and when they don't, it's not a big deal, because we expect them to win the next one.

The canucks fans might just be the thickest in the league, they make the NJ tweeners sound like hockey geniuses...They clearly don't understand what the trap entails as they seem to have confused it with forechecking.

And what type of limp-wristed dainty frolics on ice do they play out west as the Vancouver fans melt down when the Rangers hit instead of letting the canucks skate merrily? You can see why Byfuglien and the Hawks took care of them by simply being tougher and harder working.

Nice win by the Rangers.

I'v read a lot of canucks fans moaning about "boring" hockey b/c the Rangers wouldn't let them skate without getting hit...

As for this style taking its toll, it's possible but all teams have to deal with the injuries in an 82 game season. I think we're deep enough to plug the holes as they arise. The key is to make sure come the real season we have the key contributors back.

A.
Clearly you weren't at the game between Sections 342 and 305. Just when I thought it was impossible to be any more disrespectful, annoying and classless, Canuck fans proved me wrong. I have a new hatred for the Canucks after witnessing a complete jerk-off Canuck fan walking around the 300's inner concourse mocking everyone while being escorted by a Security guard. He is honestly lucky to have made it out alive, if there was no security guard there I bet any amount of money he would have been tackled.

I have never witnessed anything like it in 10 years of going to MSG.

There are games in the season that propel a team and this could be one of them. With all the injuries this was a sick win. Everyone and i mean everyone showed up tonight.

I went over to the Nucks board and i posted that the Boyle line was a very important line for the Rangers and im sure a majority of them shrugged off that comment. Well they sure saw it tonight. I'm really proud of this team and the coach.

You know theres a lot of positives going on with this team this year. But i'm extremely impressed with the consistency this team is showing. I'm flat out stoked with this teams effort, personality, passion and emotion to be perfectly honest. I mean you can go down the lineup on a nightly basis and point out a player who really plays his role well and adds to what this team needs to do to be successful. And quietly. And honest. And always with the team in mind.

I dont know about you guys but to me those things add up to a damn good team and one i'll be confident when the puck drops in the second season. I dont know where this team will ultimately end up this year, but there are tons of younsters on this team and there are champions in a lot of them the way the play. Again, im just being honest and im trying to stop myself from getting too overboard here. Im just really happy the way things are going right now and the future is very bright imo.

Torts mentioned in one of the wins, i think it was that wild Pitt OT winner with Dubi and Cally. He said it wasnt the goal and the win that satisfied him, it was the way they celebrated after. Genuinely happy for eachother. That goes a long way in this sport. This team has got eachothers back, you can see it. Messier always used to talk about that with the Oiler teams that won the cups. Again, i hope im not gushing too much, but i just have to be really honest with what im feeling and seeing out there, regardless of what the final outcome is this year. Its great to see and its great to be a Rangers fan right now.
Very nice, heartfelt. It sure does feel good to have a team you feel can win every night. Especially with all our home grown and younger players.

I think your observation about how close they are comes from the fact that many of them feel they are coming up together. I think it's harder to get that with a cast of FA's. This I feel is at the heart of the strength and resiliency we see from this team.

It's seems the team, the organization has finally turned a very big corner.

What is still surprising to me is,

We've yet to lose more than 2 games in a row (or at least get a point) through mid-point in the season.
We've yet to win more than three games in a row, in the same respect.

We are 18-0-0 going into the third period leading.
We are 13-3-3 in one goal games.
We are 11th in the league in GF.
We are 6th in the league in GA.
We are 8th in the league in points.
We have the best road record in the league.
We have the most short-handed goals in the league.
Lundqvist is tied for the most shut outs.

We've done all of this without the Gaborik we had last year. Without one ounce of Prospal.

Add in almost 90 man-games lost due to injury this season, most of which were our team's scoring from last year + our captain and having one of the youngest D's in the league. (You can say we'll have at least +37 Fro, +/- 37 Prospal, +/-7 Cally, +/- 7 Christ, +/- 10 Boogaard. We'll be approaching 200 for the season based on what we can comfortably guess at currently and having no more injuries)

It's quite impressive to me. This Canucks game vividly depicted what this team is almost all about to me, and I'd love to have some more of it.
