Free Agent Targets 2011

Zenon Konopka

The guy has turned into a very capable faceoff man, can and will go toe to toe with any heavyweight, not the best skater but not the worst, and won't cost an arm and a leg.

If his faceoff prowess isn't an anomoly, he would be the perfect fourth line centre for this club.

Thoughts?

I would target him, Jan Hejda, and maybe Curtis Glencross on the UFA market.

That's exactly who I would go after as well.

He's not a quality enough hockey player to play the role we need that checking centre to play. Faceoffs are nice, but if he can't play match-ups, we'll still have a problem.

Think Halpern or Pahlsson, not Konopka.

I like Hejda actually, though I think his game is slipping a bit.

Other guys I have on my radar, Joel Ward from Nash, I love his game, Rick Rypien, Verne Fiddler and maybe Boyd Gordon.

I like the idea of Glencross... and he could give some grit to the third line. And Konopka would (as I have mentioned elsewhere) be an improvement on the 4th... I would still like to see MacIntyre remain though. Konopka as a replacement for Stortini.

Glencross-Konopka-MacIntyre/Reddox could be one heck of a fourth line. Glencross could also bring some much needed grit to the third line, Glencross-Horcoff-Jones.

Totally agree. He wins faceoffs and can be an effective middle weight and actually plays. I suggested it in another thread yesterday about MacI and Storts.

Glenncross would be nice too.

Aren't we paying Horcoff $5.5 mill cap hit to do that?

Konopka would be a replacement for Fraser.

There will be lots to target, but Konopka is a guy I'd like. He's been used in a PK role too, so I think that has to be mentioned as well.

The problem I see is Konopka will probably be offered contracts from a lot of teams and Edmonton isn't likely to be on top of that list.

Our true checking centre will be Shawn Horcoff, IMO.

Get a fourth liner that can win draws (Konopka fits this bill) and surround Horcoff with some effective checkers who can play match-ups, and the bottom six takes on a whole different look and role.

One guy, if we can use this as a sort of "All purpose UFA thread" that I would like the Oilers to look at in the offseason is Steve Montandor, he's played very well in his last two stops

3 consecutive 20+pts seasons, plays gritty and tough, plays 20 mins a night for the Sabres, he would be an upgrade on Vandermeer.

Yeah he blocks a lot of shots too. He's just a really good D man. Plain and simple. Something we need a couple of IMO.

Konopka wouldn't address our PK issues. He wouldn't take away from Gagner's assignments or Hall's or whoever elses. Getting Stortini and company the puck is not a concern IMO.

Getting own-zone possession of the puck against the Sedin's or the Thornton's of the West is. Wouldn't want Konopka on the ice in that scenario.

Need a better class of player. I'd rather keep Cogliano and bump him down (as he has come on as an energy checker type) and get a Halpern to share with Horcoff and Gagner.

Cogliano as a fourth line centre? Don't see that working.

3 consecutive 20+pts seasons, plays gritty and tough, plays 20 mins a night for the Sabres, he would be an upgrade on Vandermeer.
Good call on Montador, a solid 3-4 type guy that we need urgently.

Retitling the thread, as well.

Why not? He's a fourth liner by talent and drive.

Unless you subscribe to the "fourth liners should be goons" philosophy, which I don't. Cogliano hits more and plays harder than Fraser anyway.

And that's really the only thing I want from a fourth line. Shouldn't be getting more than 10 minutes of ice.

I honestly don't see him being happy in such a role.

Think Halpern or Pahlsson, not Konopka.
Definitely not in a 3rd line role but I've been a ZK booster for a couple years now and anyone who doesn't think he'd be a good fit here while we use up five roster spots on guys who bring a fraction of what he brings to the bottom end of our line-up (Jacques, Smack, Stortini, Fraser, Strudwick) is crazy. 4th line center who has been a faceoff monster for three years now, will hit, fight, and by all accounts is a great team guy, oh, and can probably be signed for 750k.

Konopka could take Fraser's spot at center except win 55% of his face-offs instead of 30%, and make Stortini redundant. If you still want the nuclear deterrent, keep Macintyre as the 14th forward. I'd love Glencross back if the price was right, but not at the expense of Jones.

No worries, I didn't want to hi-jack it, but I thought it could be good for that purpose.

I've been thinking too, one of Dupruis or Talbot from Pit, they aren't world beaters, but there's something about guys who've been part of recent winning cultures and around players like Crosby, that I think would do wonders in the locker room as well as on the ice.

His lack of ability to win faceoffs would be why I do not think he should be a centre period.

I think Cogs could actually find a spot on a checking line with Horcoff, if he does indeed stay.

I agree with you completely on Konopka v. Fraser. I defending Fraser a bit to start the year, but he's pretty useless, and frankly he needs to be moved on in the offseason.

I'd love to get Pitkanen back. I wonder if he would come back for 4.5.

I don't know about the Jones-Gagner-Eberle line, might be an example of playing guys not suited for roles.

Penner-Hall-Hemsky (Scoring 1)
Paajarvi-Gagner-Omark (Scoring 2 playing softer minutes)
Cogliano (FA)-Horcoff-Eberle (ES match up line)
Jones-Konopka-Reddox (Energy and toughness that can get and keep the puck when needed)

Looks OK on paper, IMO.
