This is Bettman trying to pull our fingers with his journalists...

However, though highly unlikely, this is sports and my betting account does experience that the unexpected will happen. More often than I normally think

How far away are we?
Real far if this team can't get more offensive production and improve their special teams. Gaborik starting to score wouldn't hurt.

This is ridiculous.

We will certainly finish in 11th place now!

If Gaborik can start scoring like he did last season, this is a team that can go far.

2-3 years, imo, at the least, 5 years, at the most. We have a ton of young talent and leaders, and, seeing as we're a top 10 team with even MORE higher-end talent still developing and not even in the NHL yet, I'd say the future is incredibly bright for the Rangers for once.

You have Stepan, Ansimov, and Boyle down the middle, all currently producing well as Rookies/Sophomores. You have a loaded backend, with a legit top pairing in Staal-Girardi, the best rookie shutdown defenseman in Sauer, a solid veteran in Eminger, and young players like McDonagh, Del Zotto, and McIlrath still developing. The of course you have Lundqvist...

We're still missing some major pieces, though. Mainly, another puck mover. And, of course, a legit #1 center(something I think Stepan can definitely bcome, though).

So I'd say we're not that far off is everything goes smoothly.

The discrepancy in their record when scoring 2 or 3 goals is pretty amazing.

NHL.com is really drinking the kool-aid.

We need a first line center and a more experienced defense to win the Cup. While acquiring a veteran top 4 defenseman will help slightly, there's nothing that can be done to speed up the development of Del Zotto, McDonagh, Sauer, or Gilroy. And there is still room for improvement for Staal and Girardi. Not sure we can be a contender until the young defenders get more experience under their belt.

The problem with their young talent is I'm not sure how many, if any, really project out to being a legit top 3 forward. And that's an issue with a team that has some cap issues and needs to score more.

I think this defense needs more time to develop until we become a contender. The only way that happens is through more playing time, not bad adding a veteran D.

I would also say that a 1st line center is much more important then adding a "legitimate goal scorer".

With a legit top 6 goal scorer and another veteran defender we'll have lines that look like this:

wolski-christensen-gaborik
*goal scorer*-anisimov-callahan
zucarello-stepan-dubinsky
avery-boyle-prust

staal-girardi
*veteran defender*-sauer
del zotto-eminger

hank
biron

tell me thats not cup worthy...

"If they could just add another goal per game..."

Are they smoking something? To add 82 additional goals per season, you need to replace two 14-goal scorers with two 55-goal scorers.

We to replace Christensen and Fedotenko with Crosby and Ovechkin. Sure, that will definitely get us the Cup. No doubt.

Can someone make that trade happen?

Yes, Ovechkin and Green for Christ and Eminger will be enough to get us the Cup.

Yeah, I could agree with that. But we'll likely have a nice chunk of cap space in the 2012 offseason we could use to acquire such.

I do think Dubinsky could become a consistent 70 point player, considering he's on pace for I think 69 points this year, which is certainly 1st line production. But after him and Gaborik, it all becomes "potential", which is a word HFBoards seems to adore. You have Stepan, who seems to have some high-end talent in his game, bt his skating could hold him back somewhat. Anisimov has a problem with keeping his head up, or, aka, getting hit incredibly hard on several occasions. And Zuccarello is a midget.

I think the best hope we have for a higher-end forward in terms of our younger players, though, is Chris Kreider. He's still just a prospect, but from what i have read/seen/heard, he seems like a special type of player. He has the game breaking speed, great hands, a good shot, and a propensity for the front of the net. Something that makes talented players even more useful.

But, as it stands, it's all "ifs" and "buts" right now. And that's a bit of a problem if we're going to try and figure when the Rangers will be legitimate contenders.

Christensen is in the lineup. And he's on the top line. That is all.

I think Hank is the reason why that could be a legitimate cup worthy team. I want to believe that another goal scorer and veteran defenseman would be enough to put them in contention.

I don't believe any of these "we need a ____" first statements. There is no sure fire formula. What you need is to do better in the playoffs than everyone else. There's no one standing at the velvet rope in front of the cup making sure you have a 1C or 2 puck movers or any of that stuff. Yeah, those things increase your chances but its the NHL playoffs and its a gamble.

Its absolutely impossible to tell "how far" you are IMO. If a team makes the playoffs they have a chance. This is a much better NYR team than last year and probably the best team that I've followed seriously but there's no translation between that and how many years until you get a cup. Could be this year, could be 2050 next time they win it.
