New Jersey - Ottawa

To New Jersey
2011 4th overall pick (assumption)
David Rundblad
Peter Regin

To Ottawa
Zach Parise

Do NJ fans value this package (or a variation of it) more than:

a) Re-signing Parise to an estimated 6.5-7 million a year.

b) Receiving two first round, one second round, and one third round compensatory picks based on not matching the offer sheet of any team but Ottawa.

Do Ottawa fans see this as a viable means to acquire Parise?

At least make that pick a 1st... This would be awful asset management by the Devils... Not a good idea to trade your high-end offensive player for a mediocre one

It is a 1st, in fact it's a fourth overall.

New Jersey would have two picks in the top 4 in 2011.

Geez, that's a tough one to project out.

Could be looking at $7M a year or more for Parise starting next season.

Rundblad is doing extremely well in the SEL and his $1.5M/ yr ELC doesn't kick in until next season ($600k base).

Mr.4th overall's ELC will also be 3 years in length and he should be a great player. Maybe $3-ish M with bonuses, $900k base?

Regin's only got 1 yr left and while I like him... he has little value in a deal of this magnitude to swing it either way. In two years he'll be making whatever he proves he's worth, so the contract aspect is irrelevant.

So maybe $5M total for Rundblad and #4 with a $1.5M base.
Y1 - won't be anywhere near Parise's utility combined.
Y2 - maybe with some luck.
Y3 - Hopefully by then.

Up to $5.5M in extra cap space available every season, $2M in reasonable cap space without risking cap overages.

I think I might stay with the status quo. It just starts to get tough when you're factoring in another $7M salary.

It is the 1st rounder.

I think the Devils would push for a better player than Regin. Probably take a risk on Michalek - despite his recent injury woes. I could be wrong, but I'd seriously consider doing that for Parise - even though everything about the new NHL and the salary cap screams not to.

If Ottawa wants Parise, it starts with their one non-starter. Erik Karlsson.

Karlsson and Fisher/Regin (take your pick) is a good place to start out

I love how teams are trying to use New Jersey's top pick as trade bait. Just because we have a top 4 pick already doesn't mean a second one is going to give us reason to trade Parise.

Result of trading Parise:
Top 4 pick
Top 4 pick

Result of keeping Parise:
Top 4 pick
Zach Parise

I personally like the second one.

Exactly, odds are one of those top picks wouldn't become as good as Parise. Karlsson would have to be involved for the Devils to consider.

Well, no. In this case, the "Result of trading Parise" would be to land that top 4 pick, plus the best defenseman in the SEL, and a young, speedy, versatile, sophomore-slumping two way centre/winger. And a few million dollars in savings.

And I don't understand how my proposal was using NJ's 1st rounder as trade bait. It wasn't even included.

Do people actually think Parise will be traded? No way devils move him.

I feel by saying this, you're suggesting that having two picks in the top 4 gives the Devils incentive to trade their star winger. My apologies if you were not suggesting this, but if you weren't, what's the point of even mentioning the Devils draft position? It's completely irrelevant.

Odds are that the top four prospects of this upcoming draft won't be as good as Zach Parise?

If not these prospects, then who?

Send a message via AIM to Synthetek
The Islanders will jump on him with a offer sheet... And get him.

Book it.

I would have no problem in giving up Karlsson and Fisher for Parise of course I might be in a minority as an Ottawa fan

You're a smart fan who understands the adage that you have to give to get. However, your defense core couldn't sustain the loss of Karlsson.

Who knows? We'd rather keep Parise than gamble on a draft pick in hopes that one MIGHT be equivalent to Parise. We have one top 4 pick this year which is plenty. Devils won't deal Parise unless Karlsson and OTT's 1st are BOTH included. Even at that, something substantial has to be added to the point where Ottawa will not want to go through with it.

Parise will be a Devil, simply because we'd be requesting overpayment that no team will meet. There is no need for us to deal him to begin with.

In all seriousness I agree, IF Parise went up for bids the competition for him around the league would be strong enough to demand Karlsson. That's how Ottawa would fall out of contention for Parise.
