I literally can't think of any possible reason for the Oilers to trade Penner, especially for such a low price. I'm guessing a deal from MTL would involve their 1st + a solid prospect, and if they didn't wanna pay that then the Oilers should be relieved and stick to the game plan.
Any interest in Kostitsyn? Maybe him along with a prospect would work okay?
No. If we trade Kostitsyn, we need a clear upgrade. Penner is not. Andrei is also more physical than Dustin. At best, it's a lateral move. So the reason you want to do this trade is why... oh I guess it's the same reason why RDS hates AK, because he is not a North American...
Every trade proposal with Andrei Kostitsyn need to be in a package for a signifiant upgrade who can play as much physical as #46. If not, we don't improve the team. It's like trade for the fun.

I guess we can agree that its best for both teams to keep their players. Penner(our leading scorer) is just as valuable to the Oilers as Kostitsyn is to the Habs so there's really no point in a lateral move

You probably just don't understand me. Dustin Penner is an upgrade to Andrei Kostitsyn because he is more consistent. But not an important one. My point is, the Habs with a lot of long term contract, the age of the fowards and the number of offensive guys ( Cammalleri, Plekanec, Kostitsyn, Pacioretty, Gomez, Gionta, Eller, Desharnais, Pouliot and Darche ) who can play in the top-9, Montréal is built to be contender and the Habs isn't. If Montréal trade AK, I don't care but I want to have a RW physical player who is also a first liner (I don't think Penner is). I know the value of Andrei is not big (low), but in a package (AK + 1st + Eller/Tinordi.... or I don't know), the Canadiens can get something who can produce like a first liner. The Habs problem is goal scoring and Kostitsyn is very valuable to the Habs because he has the best/dangerous shot of the team and he is our hits leader (very important because the Canadiens is a hard-worcking-but-small team).
Edm would trade Penner but only for the right deal and that deal would be for a big nasty dman. That would be Tinordi, plus we are not interested in Kosti so you guys can keep him.
Penner is not going to get Tinordi and a 1st so that is a bit too crazy to ask for. We can add another player in to help your team out. What else does your team need?
are you saying you think Penner is worth a #1 + Tinordi??

Tinordi is not an average prospect. Penner is worth the same deal that Horton was traded for and that is a mid 1st which Tinordi is. Yes, a pick can be added in like a 2nd or Edm could add another player in like Cogs or another player and Montreal can add thier 1st but 1st rounders just aren't traded that often any more.
He would be a great in our top 6 .
But what would it take to get him?
I watched the Kings game on Hockey Night in Canada right after the Habs game just to see Penner and others play. Penner is big, poised, good hands, strong along the boards, qualities the Habs need. BUt I am not sure his skating style would fit in well with the Habs. Who play high speed, high energy type game. Plus, after seeing Penner still up for young Hall after he got flattened, can't see the Oilers being in a hurry to trade Penner. In other words if they do the price to acquire him will be too high.
I would look to add a guy near the end of his career who can be picked up for a fraction of what Penner costs. Somebody with size, playoff experience and can pop 20 goals. A Jason Arnott type.

If you watched the game you would of seen that Penner does have speed. They talked about that last night how he blew by Scuderi and beat him to the puck by three strides.
If he's as slow as people say he is theres no way he should have gotten the shot off here
He just looks really goofy because he's so big. A crotch rocket doing 120km/h will alway look fast than a semi doing the same
