Devils-Sabres

A Devil's fan coming in peace here, just curious on your thoughts of a proposal i've been kicking around for awhile now.

To Buffalo
Hank Tallinder

To NJD
Craig Rivet

I know he is your captain and all but it seems he has been a healthy scratch for a lot of the year and has been in the dog house for awhile now. Hank also hasn't really worked out the best in New Jersey and could use a change of scenery to help him out

The Sabres get a player who played fantastic with Myers last year and I see no reason why that couldn't happen again.

The Devils get a struggling defender in the last year of his contract which would give us some much needed cap space for this summer.

Am I close....thoughts?

No. Tallinder is locked up for a few years, and the Sabres are struggling. He's not going to turn the season around, so there's no point in taking his contract back.

He's getting kind of a lot for three more years is the problem. If he only had one more year left on his contract, I'd say yes. But I gotta say no just because of the length.

Myers can't play with Hank forever. He'll be fine.

Yes, if for no other reason than to get more value than Craig Rivet out of trading him away at the end of the season or next year.

Tempting. I would think Hank might get more to a team looking for a mobile vet defenseman however, even then getting the deal off the Devils' books and getting them more than just cap relief.

If this season wasn't already a complete wash - done. Probably.

All things considered - I think it's close. I'd rather have Lydman for 3 years, but that ship has sailed. The 3rd year is probably the biggest sticking point, that and we're getting crowded on D again. We also have Leopold and Morrisonn on the books for next year, and we may want to re-sign Montador. Add Tallinder and we'd probably have to ship out someone - Butler?

And unless I'm missing something, Rivet has negative value in this proposal, since he's UFA (and probably retired) after this season. We're not getting anything for him, so much as NJ is taking him off our hands in exchange for us taking Hank's contract off theirs.

Yeah I would decline, how about Volchenkov for Connolly, Sekera, and a pick?

I've always liked Tals more than the majority of Sabres posters here, so baring in mind that I'm in the minority, I'd go for it!

I like the Volchenkov idea, but Sekera (I think) is starting to be an asset worth keeping around. I like the Connolly and a pick part. Maybe add one of 3 G's, Gerbe, Gaustad or Grier? Hank T. Is too expensive now for what he brings.

No. I'd rather get a defenseman with Tallinder's ability to start the rush from behind the play and who is capable of eliminating guys in front of the net.

Yeah I'd like to have 6 Chris Prongers on my team too.

He's asking for Craig Rivet for christ-sakes.

Favorably comparing Tallinder in transition to Pronger is laughably overrating Tallinder.

I don't want him playing with Myers. I'd much rather sign Hejda, trade for Beauchemin, etc, etc, etc to cover for that role. If he's not with Myers, he doesn't have the offense to offset a shutdown pairing. At that point, Hank becomes a 3+ million bottom pairing defenseman.

Backstrom, Laich, AND Semin for Miller, Rivet, and Grier. Sounds fair to me.

No, I do not want Tallinder back. If we all remember correctly, last year he had an awesome year playing with Myers, which is why he got the NJ contract. This year he tanked. Two years ago we were screaming about how lousy he was playing. We wanted him gone two years ago, as well as three years ago.

No way. He played a great season in a contract year and now he is tanking. Keep him. Add his age, forget it. We want everyone older (Rivet, Grier & Neids) off the Sabres right now, why bring Tallinder back at his age, when we want to get younger????

No thanks. We are getting rid of Rivet's contract at the end of the season and there are plenty of UFA d-men better than Tallinder available.

It makes this team better, so yes. It also allows for better pairings

Tallinder - Myers
Leopold - Montador
Weber - Sekera
Morrisonn

Tallinder doesn't have *that* bad of a contract. Another team would trade more than Rivet for him at some point.

At worst, you could try to do a 3-way trade involving Tallinder (to 3rd team in) and Rivet (to NJ)

Tallinder is not and will never be a top pairing d-man. He's been awful for NJ this season. He's -21, second to only Kovulchuk.

He has 3 years left at 3.3 and change a year. Thats 33, 34, 35. His play will not be getting better from this year, its going to go down.

Plenty of better d-man available. And Tailinder might better the team THIS year, but he certainly won't make it better next. Plenty of UFA d-men available. No need to pick up a bad contract because he played well with Myers.

Buffalo needs to find a d-man who can play with Myers as he starts to get into the 25-27 minute range. That's not Taillinder.

Hank was part of the problem in Buffalo, not part of the solution.

Right, but Tallinder is still better than Rivet across the board and it's a straight up trade. I'd like to get a really good well rounded D-man with just Rivet being sent off too, but that's not going to happen. Tallinder is an excellent return for a guy that only plays a few token minutes because his coach pities him.
