Samuelsson might be traded

Two Swedish hockey sites says Samuelsson, also Ballard and Torres, might be traded due to salary cap issues.

Rather leave the team the way it is and not bring back Salo.

they do not undestand the cap

when salo comes back from the LTIR--he will eat up what little cap space the nucks have--nucks will need to send on guy down to farm to make up the difference

nucks are bumping the cap--but wont be over when Salo comes back

Trade away significant pieces from the 1st place team in the league, sounds like a good idea to me.

Why would they trade Torres? That makes no sense. He only makes 1.1. He's a great 3rd liner, and played like a maniac with Edmonton in the playoffs. He seems like the sort of player Vancouver needs to keep, not trade away.

We actually need to clear about 1.6 in theory but there's a way to get around it and have everybody in place for the playoffs:

1: Waive Bolduc, Volpatti & Rome the day before the trade deadline (19 games left in the regular season)

2: Call up Volpatti, Bliznak & any depth defender on a 2-way contract the day after the trade deadline

3: After 5 games or so, put Salo on a conditioning stint (3 games) and then ask the league to extend it another 2 games.

4: Waive Bliznak, Volpatti & depth defender

5: Put Alberts on the 4th line (Hansen - Glass - Alberts) and Salo on the bottom pairing for the last 8 games of the season.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Raymond - Kesler - Tambellini
Torres - Malhotra - Samuelsson
Hansen - Glass - Alberts

Edler - Erhoff
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Salo - Ballard

Luongo
Schneider

Subtracting Raymond's 90,000 bonus put on this year's cap, the Canucks have $26,500 in cap space for the last 8 games of the season.

6: After the last day of the season move Alberts back to defence, call up Hodgson, Bliznak & Volpatti

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Raymond - Kesler - Tambellini
Hodgson - Malhotra - Samuelsson
Torres - Glass - Hansen
Bliznak - Volpatti

Edler - Erhoff
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Salo - Ballard
Alberts

Luongo
Schneider

I dont see us trading Torres . We also don't need to activate Salo until he is ready, which should be playoff time.

I dont believe we have room for Salo after the trade deadline with the same cap.

Burke is an idiot for not signing Torres even when Torres wanted to sign with us. (Atleast it was rumored he had said he wanted to)

A 3rd line of Torres - _____ - Armstrong would be such a great 3rd line

im all down for burke bashing but maybe torres didnt want to sign with a losing team.

i remember when he signed in vancouver, he said he was looking to be part of a good team and get his reputation back up.

i think he wants to win a championship or just have a good 20 goal year so he can cash in next off season, 20 goals for him is a pipe dream if he's in T.O

Why when we have a thrid line of Versteeg - Soon to be Bozak - Armstrong which is much better offensively and = defensively.

sounds like these papers piggybacked off a story in the local paper a few days ago, where the writer suggested Torres, Samuelsson and Ballard as possible cap casualties.

I believe it was Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun but I am not 100% positive. Anyways the article was full of salary cap inaccuracies and ripped apart on the Canucks forum.

3 players soon to hit 20 goals, 5 on pace too, one playing on the 3rd line, but sure ya a pipe dream. If anything it would be more realistic as Torontos top 3 lines play close to equal minutes every night. And Torres wanted to play for his home town.

I love that idea just to see the A-Train charging into the corners on the forecheck.

trading Samuelsson would make Mike Gillis a liar and a hypcrite, of which he is neither. there is zero chance of trading him. Raymond, Ballard, maybe. But not Samuelsson. Its not about his current play, its about what he was promised when we signed him as a UFA, and the message our franchise is sending to future UFA's. MG says he wants to build a franchise around player respect and honesty, basically the opposite of our previous regime, which lasted forever (Quinn/Burke/Nonis) and treated the players like dirt.

Wow. Thanks for posting that. I was pretty sure they could do something like this, but I didn't know the exact details. I'm not positive that all of the numbers work, but it makes sense to me.

Trading Samuelsson would be an AWFUL idea. He was our best player in the playoffs last year, not to mention our leading hitter. He can score from anywhere and really ramps it up in the playoffs. Torres was the exact kind of player we we're missing last year (beside a Malhotra kind of third line center). A powerforward playing on the third line, capable of multi goal games, who likes to hit.

EDIT: Oh and seeing Alberts with the sole responsibility of hitting people would be awesome. He could make big open ice hits that wouldn't automatically result in an odd-man rush.

No problem, I've mathed and re-mathed it about a hundred different times and this one works the best.

A few extra notes:

The reason Volpatti & co need to be waived are because you can only waive players who have been called up post Trade Deadline apparently

All the #'s make sense and I've gone through it a bunch of times

I also messaged Mike Gillis all this information on twitter

Assuming the Nucks can keep their major roster players, there is no reason to trade Bieksa. Even if Bieska starts playing poorly again, they can just switch Salo into the number 4 spot and Bieksa into the number 5/6 spot. Bieksa has been playing his best hockey for the last 20 games since he was on the shutdown line with Mitchell. That being said, he was AWFUL for the first 20 games or so. HFboard criticisms were totally valid. A Bieksa dumb play drinking game would have got you drunk. Hopefully he plays like he is right now in the playoffs.
