Andy Greene at the Deadline

Makes 750,000 K.

UFA at end of year.

Has had an awful year like most of the Devils until the last 6 games.

Last 6 games 1g 4 A 5 Pts +6

Season totals - 45 games 3 G 13 A 16 PTS -19

I say 3rd rounder.

I say a 2nd and a 4th because of there being a lot of teams bidding for his services because of his cap hit.

Boston is my bet for where he'll end up.

Is there any word on an extension?

I think that the Devils would be smart to wait until Feb 28th to trade Greene, because he's been playing really well as of late - on both ends of the puck. I think he could rejuvenate his trade value and be worth a mid-2nd round pick. Best case scenario? Maybe the Devils get their pick back from Nashville.

Andy Greene is not a 1st pairing defenseman, but he's a decent top-4 puck mover when paired with a decent partner. He's just been waaaaay overstretched by the Devils, who were playing him 25 minutes per night over the past 12 months. How many teams out there wouldn't love to add a player like Greene for basically no cap hit?

I think that it would be nice if the Devils could extend him, but only if were really cheap. Thanks to White/Volchenkov/Tallinder, we're already spending a lot of money on defense, and the Devils have a decent pipeline of puck movers incoming with Merrill/Urbom/Gelinas/Taormina. They can afford to lose him.

Any chance NJ can build a deal around Greene for Savard? (I know it doesn't work cap wise but cap dumps can be added or a third party can be brought in.) I would like to see Savard play with Kovy again.

If not a 2nd and an ok prospect would be what I would like to see.

If the Devils are actually willing to move him, he's someone I could see the Avalanche being very interested in. Quality 2-way defenseman in his mid-20's.

I am thinking that the chances of greene being a devil again next year are very slim and I am okay with trading him for a second rounder

compared to the rest of the league, we're not spending a lot of money on our defense, at all.

Something like Greene + Clarkson + Henrique?

Assuming you aren't willing to take Rolston, one of Clarkson/Zubrus would have to be going back to Boston for salary reasons. I think Clarkson would do very well with the quality center depth Boston has.

Savard/Zajac/Josefson is great center depth and makes Henrique expendable, his great two-way play would fit nicely in Boston's future.

I could see Montreal and Boston both interested in him. Just to add depth to both bluelines for a strong playoff push.

I think Lou might trade him and make an honest effort to sign him July 1st.

But let's remember even with Langenbrunner's contract off the books and probably Arnott's, Devils will still have cap trouble for next year especially with Parise getting a raise of some kind (arbitration or extension).Andy Greene may be a casualty of bad cap management by Lou and Company.

Devils defense is already awful & Greene is the best of the bunch. Not sure how they can afford to lose him unless the return is really good or there's no chance of signing him to an extension.
