Other than Travis Moen, we are a team devoid of a "deterrent" to the opposition. So Monsieur Gauthier it now falls upon you to add some sandpaper to the lineup. Individuals who should be targeted include, but are not limited to:

JF Jacques: big mean winger, French, adds a lot of size and hits like a train. Could be had for minimal sacrifice.

David Clarkson: solid winger that's an excellent two way player. Could play in almost any situation and has decent hands. And he's tough.

Call up Ryan White. Hell call up Alex Henry! The time is now to start initiating the physical play, rather than playing a terrified perimeter trap oriented defense because our players cannot play an aggressive hard nosed affair because we simply don't have the horses to compete. Thoughts?
Deterrent? You really believe that?

Let's see, if Derek Boogard is that baddest dude in the NHL then how is it that Mikko Koivu had his ankles removed in a game in which Boogard played. In fact, similar stuff has happened twice this year to Rangers players in games for which Boogard was dressed.

Hmm. Who's the best player in the league? A lot of people say Sidney Crosby. What happened to him? Were none of Derek Engelland (new fight fan fav), Eric Godard, Michael Rupp, Matt Cooke and Arron Asham dressed on those nights when Crosby was hit? I'm pretty sure any one of them is a match for Steckel.

You're using transductive reasoning. You're also living in the stone age. Even my namesake wasn't much of a deterrent when you think about it. I remember him cleaning Don Jackson's clock after the latter sticked Carbonneau. Deed was done. I also remember Knuckles taking an extra pair of minors for going after a turtling Keith Crowder after the Essex native hit Svoboda with a cheap shot. Some deterrent.

The deterrent dimwits will go on about the instigator. I wish someone would explain that logic to me. Last time I looked, 2 for roughing or 2 for unsportsmanlike were still on the books and available for to the refs. The famous Jay Miller - John Kordic set-to in 1986 included an extra 2 for Jay. I've also heard Christopher John Nilan on more than one occasion say that the instigator excuse is a farce and that the guys would happily kill the minor if it really mattered.

The deterrent factor doesn't exist. It's a myth. It only works in nuclear war and that's only a solution so far. The US has the death penalty for murder. That really works as a deterrent.

We really got pushed around last night. Sure its great to see Gionta fighting hard against Gaustad who is twice is size but i the long run we cant consistently win those battles.
What was clear last night was that Buffalo knew they could push us around.

On the positive side they only beat us 2-1 in OT with our tired and injured squad.

Because the Habs can play hockey!!!! The Bruins don't have the speed or skill to beat the Habs.

I'll take speed and skill over 3 lines of goons anyday.
No, I'm a Hab fan through and through, rarely miss a game. I tend to only watch Hab games though and don't realize how boring they are to watch sometimes. But like I said, this system gets them wins and thats all that matters in the end.

And Bruins are far from a team of goons dude, they can kick your ass physically and on the score board. Last time I checked they're higher in the standings, scored more goals and have a better GA.

I would like us to toughen up so that we have other facets to our game and can respond to teams that want to challenge us physcially when emotions are running high .

Intimidation is a common strategy used against us by our opposition. We respond ok occassionally (see last Saturday vs. the Rangers), but for the most part we are lacking in this facet.

Game-to-game is not a good way to consider this issue. The strategy is applied against us with the long term in mind... usually after games are out of reach (either way).

It doesn't always have to be fighting... it can be finishing checks and extra shots after the whistle (what we did to Crosby in the play-offs). We need to do more of that.

I'd take a penalty for that ("sending a message") in a 5-2 game against a rival than another friggin obstruction penalty.... my gosh we get a lot of penalties in the neutral zone.
