Las Vegas Islanders?

Visiting Las Vegas for a couple of days and I came upon a construction site on the northend of the Strip near the Sahara Hotel. It said future home of the Silver State Arena. Checked out the website Silverstatearena.com and discovered a beautiful state of the art arena, that will seat 21,000 for hockey. The arena opens in the fall of 2012. If I was a betting man (I guess I am since I'm in Vegas), the Islanders would be my odds on favorite to end up here.

Hockey teams belong where the best arenas are, though.

Las Vegas.....Kansas City.....Dubai.

The islanders can't play anywhere till the lease ends with the NVMC after the 2014-15 season. Most likely that arena is being built for basketball and seeing as how the NO horents are in trouble, they'd make the most logical sense to move to the new las vegas arena.

the nhl didn't let the coyotes move cause buttman didn't wanna have huge egg on his face and piss off winnapeg(sp) jets fan. He still wants to give them hope of hockey returning to their city. Also who says the isles aren't moving. Wang can do whatever the hell he wants with the isles after the 2014-15 season. Just cause he says he isn't moving them doesn't mean that he won't. I've never once trusted a word the idiot owner has spewed.

There are several billionaires who have been trying to get an NHL team in Vegas for years. The NHL sized arena is just one of the things being used to show it's a viable NHL city. I would not be surprised to see an NHL team there some day.

The Sacremento Kings are the rumored team for that arena.

Such a great idea! It's bound to happen anyways after Tavares leaves when his ELC is up and signs with Toronto.

I just came back from Vegas. No NHL will ever move to Las Vegas due to that city is mostly tourist so they wouldn't get a good fanbase. They would do good with sponsorships but they will not fill the arena on a nightly basis nor have the diehard fanbase as well.

I would think temptation of players would be an issue. " Girl in your room in 20 minutes" would be something we would see in the newspapers daily

That arena project was voted down in November. They still have the signs up on the site but it is dead in the water. Harrahs has land they offered up behind them and Imperial Palace, but its not happening anytime soon.

That's not true. Bettman said, on Boomer and Carton some time ago that the Islanders won't play in NVMC a second longer than they have to, whether if it's in New York or somehwere else. There's a facility in Arizona, and none in New York.

That said, there's no chance it'd be to Las Vegas when Eastern Canada needs another team.

Cheers,

Dan-o

That's just really on the strip. It's bigger than several NHL markets already. I think Vegas could get a pretty decent following-they'd be the only game in town. And they'd pull in tons of people just looking for something to do in the night.

Not to mention slots at the seats for when the 'Isles' are getting blown out.

I'm being sarcastic. Didn't think I needed the sarcasm smiley for that one.

I've been saying it on the main board to mock the leaf fans.

We have an ECHL team here that draws decent. It would work if you had about 8,000 season ticket holders and 8,000 corporate/casino sponsored tickets. Hockey is growing here, the only issue is that the youth teams spend half of their time in SoCal and Phx playing so there is alot of your fanbase. Tourism would play well for the big market teams because there is always a chance that someone books a trip when their team is playing here.

I think the arena project is still 2-3 years away though.

I can say I'm not going to burn my life savings, but it doesn't mean I wont.

Here is all you need to know, and the one thing that all these people thinking the Islanders could move seem to forget.

No intelligent business man in their right mind is going to take a professional sport franchise out of NY and move anywhere other than LA, Chicago or Boston. You would have to be a serious fool to move any business out of the largest market in the free world. Period

They might move to Queens, they might move to Brooklyn, they might move to Suffolk, they might move to another location in Nassau.... they might even stay put. No chance in hell they get moved to any of the cities being rumored.

What I don't understand given the volatile situation withe that fat ***** murray is why it doesn't seem that Wang is being agressive in finding a suitable alternative place anywhere. I would think that there is somewhere relatively close to the LIRR to put up his mecca and wherever it would be would love it for the tax revenue. Just doesn't add up to me.

"Huh?!" --Dodger & Giant fans

If the Isles played in Manhattan somewhere I'd agree with you, but they play out in the burbs and are loosely associated with NYC through a designated television area. It's not the same as trying to move the Rangers out of NY unfortunately.
