The last two years the Rangers have been very consistent with the type of players they've brought in and who they've drafted and who they've let go.

The team's success this year is completely related to a very high work rate, strong physical play, and making the most of the limited top end talent available. Callahan fits this mode completely, and even players like Drury (accepting the new role as 4th line C) and Frolov before the injury (blocking shots, playing a decent D game) have bought in.

A lot of fans know that any player that can't make this adjustment will most likely be gone. That makes trading for guys like Wolski and Penner more risky - they took the gamble on WW because Rozsival became expendable. THey are unlikely to take that chance on Penner unless whoever goes the other way is expendable and Callahan simply isn't.

Why would we trade our next captain for a player that does not live up to their potential? We have a couple of Penner type players in our pipeline so what do we do with them? We are not trading our core unless we get a world class player in return and the odds of that happening are remote. But knowing Sather nothing is impossible when it comes to him fleecing another GM, right Bob, Darryl?

I would start by watching more than 8 games before making a grand pronoucement about their direction. With Gordie Clark replacing Maloney and Renney the emphasis has been on size, speed and grit. If they draft a smallish player he has skill, but still takes the body and usually can skate to make up for size and is either a play maker or a scorer. See MZA as an example.

Over the next 2 years the complexion of the rangers will continue to change some more as the Drury's, Avery's will be gone and replaced by more home grown talent. Come February another piece, Hagelin will be coming in from Mich. Kreider will not be far behind and Grachev is already cutting his teeth in Hartford. All 3 of those players fit the Penner mode. Smaller skill players like Bourque, Fasth and Thomas are couple to three years away. Ethan Werek & Roman Horak will turn pro and start his assent next year. Defense remains a strong point for this organization. We have the youngest D in the league and will only get better. McIlrath will add a dimension that this organization has lacked since Jeff Buekeboom patrolled our blueline. Bangers like Valentenko and Pashnin will only add to the depth on D and a Torts type dman, Kundratek is learning the pro game in Hartford this year.

To say that this organization is all over the place shows an utter lack of knowledge about the organization. All of these players fit within the context of the type of team they are building. Different parts for different roles. Will all these players make it? No. A number will be used to acquire any missing pieces deemed needed. We will trade pieces that we deem essential? I doubt it.

If we needed a Penner, Sather would palm off some prospects or vets that he and the organization deem are non essential and leave the opposing GM feeling he got the better of the deal while Slats walks away puffing a cloud of smoke to cover yet another grand theft by the master trader.
